Tonight i will play for the fist time KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC

-xbox). I allready finished Battlefornt 1,2 jedi knights and clone wars. I think this game it different from the others. Any tips would be helpful.

Take your time with it. Unlike the 2nd KOTOR game, the 1st one is really detailed in telling a story. I've played the game dozens of times already and only am able to piece the true story together. The story unfolds slowly and you can miss out on important clues to the story if you rush it.

Since it is a 1st Playthrough, I'd like to go ahead and tell people to be VERY careful about revealing any spoilers! Think before you post, even on strategy.. as sometimes we can mistakenly give away some important info ;)

Hopefully angela70478 hasn't already been spoiled while browsing the other parts of the forums.. but let's at least keep this thread "clean"... :)

zadi's answer is a good example to follow

@angela70478,

Read everthing! The game's storyline is rich with detail and has so many options it's dizzying (in a good way).. and most importantly.. save, save, save your game often and in multiple slots..

Do not depend on the Quicksave function as it can sometimes be your worst enemy :)

The quick save does not exist in the XBox version of KOTOR, or the TSL version. But yes, save in multiple slots.

Hey Chainz, try editing the modulesave.2da file. You can set it so it will auto save on any map you enter. Or at least the maps you want to do that on. That way you can always have a recent back up and don't have to stop the game to take the time to save. :)

My advice for your first paythrough is to talk with everybody in depths. My father played the game for the first time recently and he only skimmed through the dialogues and didn't ask all the questions he could've have. He missed out on a lot on details that makes the story and the game in general so much cooler.

Talk with your party members often too. If they run out of dialogue options, just talk to them later. As you progress through the game you will be able to obtain subquests from them, among other possible interesting things...

And, yeah, save often.

And don't use the auto level up function.

Enjoy!

My husband frequently asks me WHY am I playing the game AGAIN. My answer is because you learn something new each time around.

Like I said above, take your time. As other have said, save often. My strategy now is to save before conversations you have with the characters that come along with you. Save before entering another level/area of the game. Save in different slots and label them so you have an idea of what the save is about.

Depend on your party members. They're there for a reason, and they can do things you can't.

Don't use the Big Bang Theory in the first few playthroughs, it takes the sport out of some challenging fights.

Don't use mods or cheats. It can be fun to use them after you beat the game, but the just take away from certain aspects the first time or two around.

Have fun, that's the game was made for. And welcome to the forums.

My advice is to avoid any strategy guides. Since this is a story- and character-driven game, you will spoil your experience if you do (like reading a book and then seeing the movie). Also, play your character as you want. Don't let somebody tell you what you have to do with the character you create.

Play it unmodded first. Talk to everyone often. Save often (at least before leaving a planet and after landing on a new one). Put the right equipment on the right person to give each member the best advantages. Switch out party members where necessary to make best use of their particular skills. Do lots of sidequests--it adds a lot of fun. Maxxing out feat and force power lines, even if you have a fewer variety of them, is generally more beneficial than having a bunch of lower level feats and powers. As Carthaholic noted, don't use the auto level up. Pick out the choices yourself based on the kind of character you want to play. Have as much fun as we all have. It's very tempting to stay up way too late playing--either remember that the game's still going to be there even if you stop in the middle of something exciting, or brew a pot of strong coffee.

Why everybody tells me to save often? I will die often?

Not necessarily. It's due to the amount of conversations that takes place and the amount of options you'll have that not only dictates if you're a Dark Jedi or a Jedi but the side-quests.

I don't know how old you are or if you remember... but in the early to late 1980s there were these books where you were given paths to take. Each answer you give or take in the book led you down a different path. The outcome was pretty much one of two ways but the whole middle part of the story varied with how you read the book. That's how this game is. You're given lines which advances or halts certain parts of the story.

I remember those. There was a whole series of them. My, how I laughed when Tattoo of Death had one of the endings 'censored due to violence.'

As spoiler free as possible, when creating and upgrading your character try to go for a high intelligence and wisdom level, as well as strength. You'll soon find out why these are important. Also, skills such as computers, security ect you do not nessecarily need as other characters (say, a droid or a Twi'lek) can fulfil these purposes. And there is one weapon you should focus your attention on, you should be able to guess this one fairly easily.

Why high intellienge...? Isn't it like completely useless? I've always played with intelligence set to 8 and never ever had any trouble finishing the game. Admittedly, I usually play soldier/guardian and therefore focus primarily on strength and dex, and then wisdom and charisma .

Well, I think you die more often during the first game than during games after that because you know where many of the surprises are at after playing it once. But, saving also helps in case you decide you aren't thrilled with a particular outcome and you want to go back and replay just that section--that way, you're not locked in to something if you accidentally hit the wrong conversation choice (happens to everyone once in a while--you hit the wrong number or the mouse slips a little and you end up clicking something you didn't mean to click). You may also find you like a certain section of game or conversation so much you want to go back and replay it again. Also, if the program itself starts acting up, sometimes going back to a previous save is all you need for the game to behave again. If you have lots of saved games, then you don't have to go back and replay as much of the game.

Have lots of fun with it!
