MdKnightR
You guys have got to check out this video... A Meditation on the Speed Limit! It was put together by some college students in Atlanta to prove just how dangerous it is to obey the traffic laws on I-285. If you don't have or don't want the Google Video Player, click on the link to campusmoviefest.com on that page to see a Quicktime version of the film. Enjoy! stingerhs
being a commuter to my college campus, i have a 30min drive down the interstate every day (minus Sat. and Sun.). although the speed limit is 55-60 mph, it might as well be the minimum speed limit. my average speed on the interstate is about 68-70 mph, and i'm the slowest thing on the road. its fast enough that other motorists don't (often) give me issues and slow enough that my truck gets maximum fuel efficiency. it would help if law enforcement would actually enforce the law as i've seen a grand total of 3 patrol cars during my commutes this semester. hehe, and one of them had a Virginia tag (i live in South Carolina)... JediMaster12
True and I thought California was bad. We have people thinking they are in F*^&&% TJ. My grandpa and my pigheaded brother tell me that the speed limit depends on the general speed of the flow of traffic. A load of Bull if you ask me but it's the truth. I use public transportation but to get to my job I take the freeway. My brother drives close to 80 in a 65 zone, a sight worse than my dad driving. If they place traffic laws and speed limits, there must be a darn good reason for it. If they want laws to be obeyed, then the CHP should enforce it more effectively. Jae Onasi
If you try to drive 55 on a Chicago expressway during non-rush hour times, you actually can cause an accident, because everyone else is going at least 65, and 80 is not uncommon. The accidents happen when someone going with traffic speed doesn't notice the slow guy in time and hits the guy in the next lane when he abruptly tries to switch lanes to avoid the guy in front. The cops don't want to pull too many people over as it gets near rush hour--too many other people then really slow down to well below speed limit to stare and say "Oh, look at the pretty blinky lights!" This, of course, can cause accidents when the guy in back doesn't realize the guy in front has really slowed down to see if the cop's going to do anything interesting. Last year, the state patrol actually did a major announcement for like a week to warn people that they were going to be enforcing the speed limit for a day on this 1 day, and I think they wrote over 100 tickets in just 8 hours in spite of the media blitz to warn everyone. The biggest problem around Chicago area is speeding through work zones--unfortunately, construction workers are getting hurt and killed by people who are going through the work zones much too fast. I do not, of course, advocate breaking the laws on speeding, but if there's one place to make sure to be especially careful to _follow_ speed limits, that's the place. I actually had to learn to be a less aggressive driver when I moved north from the Chicago area, because people in my town drive relatively normal. Plus, the law enforcement patrols our part of the interstate pretty heavily to catch those speeding drivers as they come across the state line from IL. I can usually count on seeing at least 1 and usually 2 vehicles pulled over for speeding (or other things) after crossing the border. I'm wondering which insurance companies are going to want that tape to go after the guy who hit the other car while trying to pass on the shoulder. What an idiot. What an idiot. Yeah, its too bad that they didn't get that great a shot of that vehicle in the process. A license plate shot would have been priceless! Darth InSidious
This may sound odd, but is this in MPH or KPH? Anyway, interesting filmlet
stingerhs
^^^^ hehe, we still use miles over here in yankee country.
Darth InSidious
Good! They keep trying to foist metric units on us over here, which has resulted in an unhappy medium between the two. Frankly, I think metric is silly - who wants to walk into a pub and ask for 500mls of beer?! Anyway, on-topic: Surely if the speed limit were raised, then people would continue to break it, only going much faster?
Darth Bond
Hey all! My first post, and evne though its not SW related, this is pretty intriguing. There are few places in the I-5 Seattle area where you can actually get to the speed limit. I commute daily (M-F) back and forth to work and it is a rare occasion indeed to get to 50 mph. More than likely you are stuck on a four-five lane freeway amidst fellow commuters (thousands it seems) travelling at a brisk 20 mph - and then 40 mph ... and then 15 mph ... and then 40 mph ... and (you get the idea). The only respite is a good loud radio and lots of angry music -- ohh how I love to commute!
Commander Obi-Wan
Yeah, i think it would be mph....that's way to slow in kph. XP
JediKnight707
People here think that there like Mario Andreide (that race car dude) or flippin Dale Earnhardt. What's really fun is racing though. Me and my dad just give some other family "the look." and we're OFF! Jking, jking. ya we usually go like 15-20 over the speed limit here.

It can be like that in Atlanta during rush hour as well, but this video was made during the mid-morning hours (probably 9 or 10 am). Since I live not far from Atlanta and have driven the 285, I can attest to how risky this project was. Generally speaking, if you aren't going at least 70, you will likely get run over. It isn't uncommon to see whole convoys of vehicles going in excess of 90 mph. Its a madhouse!
