Cygnus Q'ol
If you were to create your own gaming computer system from the ground up, where would you start and what brands are the best? For the sake of fun, let's just say money isn't an object right now and it's up to you to put together a kick-a$$, dream system centered around gaming. What components are necessary? What peripherals, cards, mice, joysticks, speed, memory, cache, etc. do you recommend? What are the absolute must haves for flawless gaming and effortless modding? jonathan7
for geat gaming you need as much ram as you can get and the latest graphics card by nvidia! the chip on my laptop isnt good enough to run oblivion but ive got soo much ram it still runs so my recomendation would be ram, it makes more of a differance to gaming than how fast a chip is (obvioulsy having both large ram and a gr8 chip would be ideal, but depends how much money you have to spend)
ChAiNz.2da
Absolutely nothing "on-board"... sound, video, etc.. If they don't make a peripheral card/slot for it... you don't need nor want it.. <-- EXCLUDING USB 2.0 or FireWire buses.. those you DO want on-board This doesn't mean the on-board GPU chipsets.. this means on-board soundcards, on-board video cards, etc.).. for gaming, I would look for a GPU chipset style board as it will take advantage of your peripheral graphics cards abilities much better.. I think nVidia refers to them as (MCP's) Media Communications Processors, though I'm unsure what ATI calls theirs (if they have such a beast)... Stay away from Intel.. no, not the processor, but the Intel GPU/MCP chipset.. they're below par than even the most basic graphic card board requirements... Go with PCI Express Video slots (over AGP)... the best cards, and most new high-def monitors are going all digital DVI.. you're going to need at least one, if not 2 DVI slots for newer monitors.. and only PCI Express slot boards will support it (well).... PCI (standard) is borderline dead, AGP is slowly dying... SATA harddrives.. minimum 7,200 RPM spin, preferably 10,000 RPM SATA Raid Arrays. Yeah, I realize you said money was no object, but realistically for some poor soul that's going to try and use this as a buying guide, I'd rather them not have to promise their first born to get a decent sized SCSI Raid Array.. hehehe (let's stick with SATA since it's much more affordable in the real world than SCSI).. 2GB RAM minimum.. 4+ preferable.. dual channel, with a 533mhz channel (or higher) OR, the newer RDRAM memory modules that run at dual 400mhz (800mhz) For processor... it's anyone's game nowadays.. both AMD and Intel have dual cores, hyper-threading (or equivalent) and have benchmarks to boast.. Intel recently took the mantle for fastest processor, but I'm an AMD fan true & true.. it's anyone's game however, so that's (processor choice) something that should be reserved for a post, in this thread, all on it's own.. (any takers out there?) hehehe...
RC-1162
erm, what he said ^^ but one thing i would do, is make the game compatible with whatever graphics card a person is using. and also, it wont have any extra software requirements other than the basic stock stuff provided by MS, or Mac, or w/e. Cygnus Q'ol
ChAiNz, you are the effen man, muchos, muchos gracias. For this particular case, we can assume that money is no object. It's just more fun that way. ...and consequently, isn't that what kids are for? Trading them in for computer components? Maybe I should have one. ...anyway, what would be the noticeable difference between a 10,000rpm SATA raid array and a SCSI raid array? Who makes the sweetest monitors these days anyway and is there such a thing as too big?
ChAiNz.2da
...anyway, what would be the noticeable difference between a 10,000rpm SATA raid array and a SCSI raid array? The "noticeable" difference? About $1,200 - $2,000 Seriously.. go SATA.. unless you're editing a movie and need real-time compositing power.. (compositing NOT to be confused with rendering or OpenGL functions) you're going to be spending a fortune on something you'll never need.. unless you just have a sudden urge to open Word in a couple of milliseconds.. hehehe... Who makes the sweetest monitors these days anyway and is there such a thing as too big? Apple, Dell, Samsung... any of the "big boys" will have something to make you drool. I own Apple Cinema Displays because well... I own a Mac.. hehehe Dell's monitors are the exact same thing for about half the price for you PC'ers out there (or Mac'ers that don't get the discounts I do) I would definitely recommend the Dell monitors to any PC'er that is on a shopping spree... the LCD's are crisp and I honestly like the picture quality better than my own Cinema's (I have to be honest despite the pain it causes me.. ) I can second this... *Browsing the forum on a Dell 20 inch LCD right now.* -RH
Jae Onasi
...and consequently, isn't that what kids are for? Trading them in for computer components? Maybe I should have one. . No, babies are just too darn cute, even when they're all squashed up and misshapen when they're just born. You fall in love with them right away, can't give them up, and then you end up paying for them _and_ the computer components. Plus computer components for them. Cygnus Q'ol
OK then, what about once they get older and are a pain in the @$$?

Jae Onasi
OK then' date=' what about once they get older and are a pain in the @$$?[/quote'] It's too late. You're hooked on them. Besides, once they reach that age, you can't pay someone to take them away. Well, maybe Ebay. You can sell anything on Ebay. Mine are PIAs now and then, but they're worth more than a million components. In fact, if someone tried to kidnap them, I'd willingly sacrifice my laptop (and pretty much everything else) by whacking the would-be kidnapper over the head with it. Not like I'm feeling particularly violent or anything today.
Cygnus Q'ol
Jae, of course you know I'm just kidding, right? I'd only sell my children for an advanced copy of KotorIII, not some stupid, old computer.
