Neil Blomkamp of South Africa will direct the new Halo movie.

His IMDB history is here

http://imdb.com/name/nm0088955/

Its odd, such a big name as Peter Jackson as the executive producer, Alex Garland Writing (http://imdb.com/name/nm0307497/), but a total Director noobie directing. He does have a lot of experience in 3d, but I thought that the film was to be live action?

He did that video someone linked to on LF a long time ago, it had a 3D police robot in it and looked pretty real.

Personally I don't think Halo deserves a movie compared to some other video games, but a well done video game movie is always a good thing anyways.

Correction, he has alot of experience blending 3D with live action, so he should do pretty good on this kind of movie.

Yeah but that's Uwe Boll, he's a f***ing moron no matter what he does. This other guy has worked on other stuff and people haven't complained about him one bit. Plus Microsoft and Bungie wouldn't be stupid enough to make the same mistake after Uwe Boll's movies have been so famously CRAP.

EDIT:

O RLY?

YA RLY

I tell you what, I've just gone from being VERY sceptical that Halo would be an even slightly good movie to thinking it might actually rock!

I remember seeing this guy's Tetra Vaal video a year or two back and it was the first video ever to convince me that CGi could be done in a completely realistic way. Of course i didn't know it was THIS guy until i looked up some of his past stuff.

And of course I've posted links to his transformers citroen adverts on these forums before as they rock...

Looking over his other stuff he seems to have a very interesting style.. documentary CGi Sci-fi... almost reminds me of Battlestar Galactica.. but with better CGi.

If he does Halo as some sort of realistic war documentary then it could actually trancend it's license and not suck!

It was called Tetra Vaal I beleive.

Personnaly, I've never really been a fan of Halo's story, or the game for that matter, so I'm not expecting much. But sometimes a good no brainer action flick can be very fun to watch.

edit: it seems I had missed toms post ;)

Well, I have yet to actually sit down and play Halo, so I really don't know much about it. However, seeing some of the things that this guy has done and the fact that Pete Jackson will be the exec. producer, this maybe the one game film to be good. May actually go see it in the theater.

Exactly, I don't even like Halo too and I think that this has a chance of being a good movie... though it also has a chance of sucking very hard, but we'll see...

OMFG. The casting thing said that they were going to make Denzel Washington Master Chief. Chiefie ain't black. That boy is a white cracker 'cause he doesn't get out of his suit often. D'OH! *smacks head* Denzel will probably do voice. DAMN I"M STUPID!!!

Church, Griff and Caboose?? That would rule.

Sorry, been watching WAY too much Red vs Blue over the last few days. Its rotting my brain.

I can't say i actually remember the voices being that distinctive from the game. Who did them? They were just "generic gruff tough guy" weren't they? Or was it michael ironside again? I can't see them not casting a well known actor in the main role.. but maybe i'm wrong.

A more interesting question is gonna be whether the chief takes off his helmet or not.. i can't see hollywood liking a movie when everyone is wearing identical armoured suits and no-one's face can be seen when they are talking... you can just see the hollywood exects throwing fits about that.

Think Judge Dredd. He never took his helmet off in the comics, but in the movie he spent most of the time with it off so you could see his face, his emotions his acting. (well, as much as there was ;) ). And dredd's helmet was far more revealing than the chief's.

[edit] reading up on the MC in wikipedia i just realised how much spartans resemble (are identical to) space marines from Warhammer40k. Seven feet tall, genetically enhanced super soldiers with special combat enhancing power armour...

.. now a wh40k movie based on the horus heresy.. that would kick major butt..

If Denzel Washington is in Halo I don't think he'll be playing Master Chief. I rather think he was being considered for the part of Sargent Johnson and people misinterpreted what meger information they had to believing that he was being considered for the role of MC. His voice isn't even close to what Chief's was in the game but he'd make a pretty good Johnson.

Anyway, as for hiring Neil Blomkamp as the director, I was skeptical until I learned Jackson actually sought him out and I actually saw his work. I loved the Citroen commerical (partly because I'm a big Transformers fan and partly because it was plain damn cool) and that documentary Alive in Joburg is seriously... I don't know how to describe it, cool yet creepy at the same time. Very avant garde (sp?) and tech noir and certainly well-suited to the Halo story. Plus, with a new writer on board who sounds like he knows what he's doing, I can't help but be a bit excited. :)

That's exactly what I've been saying since I've heard that rumor.
