Just wondering...

Recommended Posts

Of course not. Trilogies in movies originated from books, of which there are plenty, the Lord of the Rings or the Neuromancer series being a notable example.

...

Was GL some kind of pioneer coming up with the whole Trilogy concept for movies, or was it done before him?

As RH pointed out, he's not a pioneer for that but even though he seems to be money obsessed these days, i still believe him to be the most unique and talented director of all time.

About 95% came out after Star Wars though...But it has a few interesting ones...So he might not have been the first one, but he was definitely one of the first to do so...

Sergio Leone's trilogy about "The Man with No Name"...

A Fistful Of Dollars (1964)

For a Few Dollars More (1965)

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

Just off the top of my head...

Forgot about those!

Brilliant movies!

The Godfather in the early 70's

But it wasn't a completed trilogy at the time Star Wars OT came out...

The Godfather (1972)

The Godfather: Part II (1974)

The Godfather: Part III (1990) Well after the OT had been completed.

Star Wars EP IV (1977)

Star Wars EP V (1980)

Star Wars EP VI (1983)

;)

Good point there RedHawke, and I've been looking through that list Commander Obi-Wan posted,

That list while a good start is completely missing the older classic movies, it has a few but not nearly the amounts it should have.

and it seems to me that GL was the first American director to make a movie trilogy...

Nope... movies having sequels is not a 'new' thing. Been happening since the days of the silent films and the old classic monster movies.

Examples: (Frankenstein only after a quick search) Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, The Curse of Frankenstein. From the 1930's and 40's. ;)
