Suggestion ; )

Recommended Posts

We take suggestions seriously and evaluate them, but they don't always 'fit' with the personality of and vision for these forums. The spam forum idea is one of these. We want to encourage discussion rather than spam, so a spam forum is not a good fit here.

For the modding forums--even if they're inactive, there are people who still visit them and end up making mods at home even if they don't post there, so the knowledge is invaluable. Some of the tutorial threads in the modding section of the Kotor forum have no posts, but that's because the staff there decided it'd be better to limit the thread to a read-only format.

What sections were you thinking needed merging?

The Senate was split off from Yoda's swamp because they needed a section for serious debate. The serious threads were causing a lot of contention in Yoda's swamp, so the decision was made to keep the Swamp a place for more light-hearted conversation while allowing a place for people to debate serious topics if they so chose. The same thing happened with Kavar's Corner getting split off of from Ahto. In this case the different sections are meeting different needs of the members so it's not really a duplicate forum. I can't speak to the demo mod forum in EaW since that's not my sphere of knowledge.

But those kinda threads should not be in each section. It spreads the activity and makes this look barren. They should be in the Community Discussion Section.

Not everyone likes all the discussion being in one place. A lot of people just come LF to visit Ahto and could care less about the other forums. Some people love discussing the serious topics in Kavar's and don't want it to have to sift through a bunch of non-serious threads to find some.

It may spread the activity but I find that it increases it. When Kavar's Corner was started it got more serious discussion threads in a month than Ahto got in a year. When the Outer Rim Territories was started we got far more non-SW stories than we ever did before. I don't know about you but I don't think those are coincidences. When people see one forum full of threads related to what they're going to discuss, they're bound to start more. If they see just one big forum with a variety of threads (making it harder to see ones similar to the one they want to start), they'll assume the topic they want to talk about isn't discussed very much and won't start a thread over it.

Merging all the off-topic discussion forums wouldn't go very well either. If you're not familiar with LF's history, it consisted of a lot of separate sites that all got joined together after a number of years. A lot of people didn't care much for the various other sites that got merged into theirs, and stuck to their respective forums.

The various communities across LF have very different atmospheres, posters, moderators and overall feels as a result. A lot of people stick exclusively to just one. They're practically separate sites in their own right. To merge them all together would make then lose what makes them what they are.

I understand what you're trying to say.

Each forum has its own personality, driven by its particular history and the posters within that forum. Some of these may superficially look similar but actually at the poster level are very different and merging some of these would cause a lot of problems. The Senate and Kavar's Corner are for serious discussion, indeed, but the Senate is a pure debate forum and Kavar's Corner is geared less towards debate and more towards general discussion of serious discussions. The personalities in the two forums are very different and some just do not mesh well at all. Merging those two forums would make members of both pretty unhappy. Some who post in Kavar's don't like the aggressive debate style of the Senate, and some of the Senate members would likely chafe at what they would feel were debate restrictions in Kavar's. Having posted in both forums and being quite familiar with the people in both, I can tell you that merging those two together would be a grave mistake.

The Razputin's Domain off-topic discussion section has a very different personality and discuss a lot different topics than Ahto. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just a different group of people having different interests. That's normal, and even desirable because it means we appeal to a broader base of people.

While I understand the desire to keep things organized and all in one spot, we don't want to merge forums that are serving different needs for different members. We might end up putting together two forums that really aren't compatible, and both of the forums would suffer as a result. While all of us keep an eye out for improvements, I'm a firm believer in the adage 'if it's not broke, don't fix it.' People are happy with those sections being where they're at, so I don't believe the sections will be moved or merged unless there's a clear need to do so.
