Gabez
What do you think is the best soundtrack of a LucasArts or LucasArts related game? I'm guessing that Pyschonauts and Grim Fandango will be popular choices, but I'd have to say, personally, Monkey Island 2. I liked Grim Fandango, but I don't really like jazz, and so parts of the music just aren't my cup of tea (though they're very well done).
JoeDoe 2.0
I vote for Republic Commando, with their theme song CLONES by Ash
elTee
Curse of Monkey Island has the best soundtrack. Although, if MI2's had been recorded at a similar level of quality it would probably take the cake. I mean I've gone on and on about how atmospheric the whole Goodsoup Hotel music is a thousand times before, but it's true. Such music is rare in games. itchythesamurai
I agree with elTee, but I also loved the music in the other Monkey Islands and Grim Fandango as well. Full Throttle and Hit the Road are pretty up there in my esteem as well.
Thrik
Yeah, definitely Curse of Monkey Island. Grim Fandango sits very high up there though, and so would Monkey Island 2 if it were re-recorded with CMI-esque standards as Tones said. I think Grim Fandango's music definitely works at its best when you're playing though, as it just swamps you with the atmosphere so much when combined with what's going on. Not that I'm saying it isn't still hugely listenable by itself, but the improvised nature lends itself really well to background music where it's more difficult to pick out the loops/repeated sound, etc. CMI on the other hand is just pleasant to listen to whenever, being an orgasm of melodic power. elTee
Hee, 'orgasm of melodic power' - excellent! I find I can listen to the Grim Fandango soundtrack outside of the game more often than any other, but the fact that each track is so short is very frustrating. It has also caused Clint Bajakian to be really high on my last.fm profile - I mean, you listen to the album for an hour and it racks up about 60 play counts. Gabez
Underground Tunels, by HighLand Productions, gives a good idea of what the Monkey Island 2 soundtrack would sound like if it were done with more advanced music making techniques. Although there's definitely something to be said for the raw power of Midis.
Benny
I have to say that Grim has my favourite soundtrack. I love the style of music and its got some cracking tunes. Swanky Maximino, Hi-Tone Fandango and Casino Calavera are particularly great. As others have said though, it's also hugely atmospheric. I'm thinking especially of the casino when Glottis is sat at the piano playing quietly. I do really like the MI soundtracks too, they just aren't as atmospheric. For both MI and Grim the soundtracks made the games so much better, I cant really imagine playing either without the music. I've tried hard not to enthuse too much here and degenerate into fanboyism. I have failed. In short, I love the Grim soundtrack and were it possible, I would have its digitally remastered babies.
CaptainDread
My ultimate favorite is the music from the CD version of The Secret of Monkey Island. I also really like the music from Day of the Tentacle. The music from the NES version of Maniac Mansion was cool as well, especially the Edisons cut-scene music. But yeah - Grim Fandango and Psychonauts have awesome soundtracks, as does Sam & Max Season One. Getting outside of adventurey games, the Outlaws soundtrack is also fantastic. elTee
Haha, Outlaws - I love the track 'Ballad of Dr. Death', and once I mentioned this to Thrik who I knew loved the Outlaws soundtrack too. He hadn't heard of it and demanded that I send it to him immediately. He had, of course, failed to realise that he could rip the soundtrack from both CDs of the game.
