NV is getting way behind now...

Behind may be word more accurately used to descibe AMD :thmbup1: Especially since G3D has published leaked GTX 360/380 Benchies.

Mind you, these are 'internal' benchies - and no other detailed info on price/power/heat ;) HH from G3D has also advised a bit of caution, not acknowledging a source. Still, they look believable enough. I can't imagine a fanboy or nv employee that desperate as to make stuff like this up?? :p Who knows.

Interesting that there weren't any Crysis at 1600p numbers.....maybe nv were skeered to run Crysis through it :D

Anyway, until independent tests are released, it best be treated as 'strong speculation' ;)

imageview.php?image=21419

It looks like 'crazyman' JHH and team green have struck back again, Empire style. Of course - for most people if AMD can maintain decent price points, they'll still shift a good amount for units. For the HD gamer, folder and/or well moneyed enthusiast, the choice is pretty simple.

Poor AMD...lucky they have the server market and fusion up their sleeve - it must be a tad demoralising. Hopefully they can use that 1.3billion Intel forked out to hire some decent R&D people.....

... more important aspect of business. ;)

The most important aspect of business is *always* making a profit !

Considering nv has just demostrated a strong profit in Q4 and AMD is still paying off debt(theyve chucked the 1.3billion Intel gave them into a 3.6billion debt)

The turnaround in nvidias profits between Q2-4 took many by suprise.

Having the new ubercard on the block in Jan 2009 isnt likely to hurt that. Of course, Im not a business expert so am merely reporting what the financial wiz types have published.

Here's a great time to combine LMAO with WTF.

It has now been confirmed that the above pictured nvidia 'internal benchies' are FAKE. Tsk to G3D for even publishing them, and Tsk to the idiot with far too much time on their hands to even contemplate such a thing.

>>source

Looks like we'll have to wait a little bit longer......

Yeah, there was a massive flame war over those faked benchies over at Anandtech's forums. It was fun to watch. :p

From what I've heard, we're not going to get any concrete info on Fermi (GT300 or whatever) until January, and it won't actually be released until March.

Oh, and I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple of months now and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with it. It's only real drawback is that it tends to use quite a bit of memory, so if you're using it on an older computer with <1GB or less it could pose a problem. It works well in conjunction with Comodo Personal Firewall for those in need of a good free firewall. :)

makes me happy that i got my 5850 when Newegg had some at $260. :D

You, sir, got a great deal on a very good card. They're $50 more than that now. It last you for a while as long as you're not gaming at 1600p. What brand did you get?

its a Powercolor, and i've never gone wrong with their stuff. and no worries about 1600p since my monitor only goes up to 1200p. :D

as for actually getting the card, i was watching Newegg like crazy during the first couple of weeks after the launch, and i finally hit the jackpot (so to speak) when they put them up while i was on my lunch break one day. it was almost as good as sniping an auction on eBay. :D

The Consumer Electronics Showsw(CES) has been raging away in Vegas for the last week or so. 2010 is definitely shaping up to be the year of tablets, e-readers and 3D displays - as these seemed to be the most prevalent new devices on display.

There was some massive geek excitement, reaching levels of sexual arousal over the elusive Microsoft Courier. More of a productivity device than the media centric apple tablet (iSlate?) is likely to be - unfortunately, this excitement was stirred into a frenzy by irresponsible tech sites like engadget and that a$$rag the New York Times - who went as far as to say a 'an insider' told them the courier would be announced at MS presentation at CES.

As there hasn't even been a prototype surface on the net, the sane among us new it was far fetched - and of course the courier hasnt been announced. It will likely become more prominent after Apple announce their tablet, which will probably occur on Jan 27 amidst a deluge of fanjaculation.

If youre saying, "Astro, WTF is the courier" > watch this. Im quite interested in it meself - if it can actually do what this CG rendered presentation shows. I like how MS have stuck to their 'ink' roots and enabled proper handwriting support with pen input - which is vital to make these things true productivity devices as opposed to merely large media players and mobile internet devices(MIDs).

(This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.)

In other news:

*As Q said, we will get some Fermi benchies in Jan, no actual Fermi til March. No biggie IMO. If they're delaying because they want to put out a better product, then what the heck. Its not like the 2xx series is floundering significantly, performance or sales wise :p

*AMD seem to be celebrating the fact that they've shipped 2 million DX11 GPUs. Some quick research will reveal that as I type this... there are only 3 directx 11 games available. Woot AMD :thmbup1: That's like posting a word record time in the 100m sprint, but doing it alone at 3am in the morning, at the running track near your grandma's house. It doesnt really count does it ?? :p

*Windows mobile 7 was unoffically announced - an MS honcho saying it will be revealed at the Mobile World Conference(MWC) in a couple of months time. MS really need to pull off something special if they want to have a chance at competing with Symbian(iphone OS) or android.

I don't know why people would want to read books on LCD screens...they hurt your eyes really bad after a while (at least they do to me) b/c they're so bright. I think the Kindle is too expensive but I also think their screen design where it's not hard on the eyes and reads more like a normal book. I just don't get what the obsession is in the tech companies about electronic books. They are convenient in the sense that they can hold hundreds of books...but normally people only read one book at a time anyway.

Can someone explain this to me?

Can someone explain this to me?

It's personal preference of course. I'm sure there are many that read more than one book at a time, not to mention newspapers, textbooks, magazines etc which are now available in e-format. Im reading 1 book at the moment, and listening to two(yay=audiobooks). 3 fiction titles are my capacity, and they need to be different genres or I'll get confused :p

Ive been using my tablet as a reader for over a year. I dont mind the LCD brightness at all, but my tablet isnt really that portable, or easy on the battery. My ideal reader hasnt come along yet - it needs to be 7" or so e-ink screen, super thin and be able to do colour and greyscale - no such device exists yet. I really need the colour for comics. They look great on my tablet but not ultraportable ;)

As for the the courier - whilst I dont think it has e-ink - it would likely be used as an e-reader. Im moreso interested in it as a productivity device - which is what MS seems to be pushing it as anyway

Do you think that it really is the wave of the future or just a fad (tablets and e-readers)?

Wait til after Jan 27 when tablet devices will truly enter the public consciousnness.

Kindle sales speak for themselves as far as e-publications are concerned. Make them colour, cheaper and accessible through plans(like cellphones) and they'll be all over the place. For students, the ability to take notes is a big thing. Kindle supports this, but not fantastically. Upcoming devices that master this will make them increasingly practical in the classroom as well. As opposed to LCD, e-ink devices can go for days without needing a recharge.

On an interesting note, whilst MS Courier device hasnt surfaced yet, a quirky yet interesting interim solution could be something like the Entourage edge - which is half ebook reader, half LCD MID running android. Would be great for that books/comics/RSS on the go combo. Still, one colour e-ink screen device would be preferable IMO ;)

Also, I dont know why it has a 2004 size bezel..that totally ruins it from a 'futuristic aesthetic' point of view :thmbup1:

ah, finally. After all the fanboy specjaculation of the last two years or so, Steve Jobs has donned his jeans and skinny to present the iPad. Its a tablet device with a screen just under 10" and runs the iphone OS. Many have called it an oversized iphone/ipod touch, and with good reason.

It definitely is sleek, but it's inescapable that there are some huge shortcomings that will make this appeal to less people. Bright side of news summed this up very well in their article here, of which here is the skinny of what is noticeably missing:

*No GPS, HDSPA/HSPA [3.5G] >> AT&T 3G support will be added later for an extra $130

*No camera,

*No multi tasking?!

*NO FLASH support >> this is crazy IMO. This is the age of flash, Youtube, pron, flash games... all out the window on this device. It will need some third party workaround of course, but their decision to slice it out comes out of a pi$$ing context with adobe, rather than any huge security concern, or considering their users for that matter.

That being said, the basic model is $499 so is a decent price for a PMP/MID with a nice largish screen....but revolutionary....probably not.

engadget has some mega coverage if you want to know everything there is to know, or read depressed apple fanboy comments.

As far as a functional device you can use at school and work, the MS Courier device is looking increasingly attractive. Time will tell if MS can actually deliver what you see in that render vid a couple of posts back, and how much the damn thing will cost.

Also, it's obvious no-one at Apple watches MadTv ;) they should have stuck to the iSlate perhaps :p

Just a heads up, MS have updated their DirectX SDK/runtimes - applies whether you have directx 9(xp) or 10/11(vista/w7)

DirectX Feb 2010 Redist [104Mb]

The recent (feb 2010) Catalyst 10.1 Drivers were causing some issues in the 5800 series cards in the form of grey screen/lines corrupting the image. If this has happenned to you since going to 10.1.... AMD have released the hotfix HERE.

Nvidia have revealed (via their facebook page apparently) that their first Fermi products will be named the GTX 480 and 470....

If you happen to be running nvidias newest 196.21 WHQL drivers, and have an EVGA dual GPU card or multi card SLI setup > EVGA's 196.21 SLI Enhancement update is a handy download if you want to add multi GPU support for Alien v Predator and further tweaks the Mass Effect 2 Multi GPU performance settings. >> remember -EVGA cards only ;)

AMD may be poised to enter a resurgence as they start to tape out their groundbreaking Llano(Fusion) CPU+GPUs.

Bright side of news have unveiled some more details about them HERE

Definitely will be interesting - I don't think they'll be 'crysis killers' by any stretch of the imagination, but hopefully great for everyday stuff and htpcs.. also allowing for smaller form factors ;)

Also, everyone who has been lamenting(or laughing at) the slow and painful death of windows mobile may be interested to know that MS is set to announce "windows mobile 7" soon at the Mobile World Congress(MWC) in Spain. Said to be taking WM more in the direction of a Zune interface, one thing that is interested many is the possibility of a robust iTunes alternative that will accompany it.

More info once the MWC kicks off ;)

It's looking like the Empire has struck back...

Over at the mobile world congress in Barcelona, MS has just unveiled what is officially called "Windows Phone Series 7" Ditching all that was WinMo, it seems MS has written the entire OS from the ground up. There are some definite parallels with the Zune HD interface, obviously.

Looks like Apple and Android have a new competitor. Looking at the buzz created among smartphone fans, alot of people are already eager to get their hands on one when they are released by the end of the year.

windows-phone-hands-pr-top-1.jpg

I myself am happy to stick to my android gizmo until I see one in action ;) Im liking that clean interface though. One of the MS designers described it as 'chromeless' ie. no shaded icons and extra image layers. Nice. Quite reminiscent of the MCPL(media center presentation layer) actually

There are quite a few additions which were lacking in WinMo.. the Zune and Xbox live integration is something which has a lot of folks excited. I'm wondering what MS are thinking about in terms of making it a competetive gaming device ?? Time will tell.

More coverage on the Series 7 phone HERE

In other news, the Notion Ink Adam is looking like the uber tablet everyone wished the iPad was going to be. I love how it can switch between black and white and colour, and can last from 16 hours (Colour screen) to 160 hours(black and white, backlight off). Its a Pixel QI screen, not LCD so not as hard on the eyes. Inbuilt 3Gwill make it the ultimate MID, reader, multimedia device. All on android and powered by nvidia Tegra 2, managing 1080p video playback apparently...

Want! Due July-ish we are told..

that Windows phone looks nice. it'll be an interesting day in about 7 months when my phone contract runs out. i'm definitely looking to get something like that or an equivalent. this smartphone market is getting crazy. lots of options. :D

and, quick question: i'm looking to build a new system around March. so correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't the Nvidia GT300 cards and the hexacore Intel CPU's supposed to be on the market by then?? or have i been misinformed??

MSDN has released a 22 minute detailed walkthrough of the OS on an actual device. Its probably the closest you'll get to one before they come out at the end of the year :p

My only curiosity during all this frenzy is what the business market is thinking. All the old winmo apps apparently wont work, no stylus input and no multitasking. Im sure MS has thought of it, and will be bringing out a more business-centric model? who knows :p

They're called GT400 nowadays (as reported previously)! I'm not sure about a March release date for the Intels, but I know its not far away - though neither are the AMD 6-core efforts. Q may be able to tell us more, he's our resident CPU guru ;)

whoa... $1k for a CPU - you'd surely only go near it if you had some specialist application in mind and/or were exceedingly riche :) I havent found my core i7 to be tardy as yet so will let it be for now.

In other news...... my 1600p monitor was pronounced DEAD today. Samsung has no replacement parts for that model (the actual panel needed replacing). It was still under warranty so they have sent to main office to decide what to do. I'll either get a refund or agree on a similarly priced product. eg. a 40" at 1080p. Other than that, Dell still make 1600p panels - the 3008WFP - which has 3 year warranty as standard as well. Unlike the samsung it also sports 1080p HDMI support which fits nicely with my future ps3 plans.

*sigh* But until that's sorted Ive been playing ME2 on a 15" monitor I salvaged from a bin...lolz \o/ :violin::p

I remember trying to talk ChAiNz out of buying a QX9650 a couple of years ago. A few months later the Q9650 came out sporting the same clockspeed at half the price, just like I told him it would.

Wait, Samsung no longer makes a 30" 1600p panel? Srsly? The Dell would be a worthy replacement. Just make sure it's the HC model.

Sorry about your luck. That sucks. :(

Yeah, the timing sucked most, a couple of days before I picked up ME2 and now a couple of weeks away from ACreed2 :thmbup1:

Ive dug around and found the 305T+ is the last 1600p 30 incher released. I always knew Dell had their model and Apple had the 'cinema' screen - Back when I got mine I read they all had the same panel inside.

Ah well, Im happy to wait for the Dell. HDMI integration is a big plus. Now. hurry up with the freakin' refund Sammy.

As for smartphones and a Windows version--once the exclusive contract is up with AT&T in the US, all bets are off. I think the iPhone will dominate the market for a very long time.

Thats a gutsy call Jae! I think it's way too early to be able to discern, barring use of a ouija board :p I'm a reasonably satisfied android user, but I definitely love the WPS7 interface.

The contract stuff doesn't stop some folks, unlocked phones are pretty easy to come by.

The reaction to merely the announcement of these have been very positive. One thing many people are pining for is an itunes alternative that isnt as mind numbingly bloated. They're also targeting xbox owners in a big way, as that seems to be what they will be using as their gaming portal, though this will extend to non xbox owners too of course.

xbox.jpg

MS seems to be riding a wave or resurgence since Windows 7, and WPSeries 7 seems to be building on that. One thing that MS and android/Google share is an existing infrastructure to provide cloud(web based) backup ie. as opposed to relying on local device sync with specific PCs. You will be able to get access to all your outlook/windows live emails and contacts, calendar etc. You can currently do this in an iphone though its not as streamlined as the customised gmail interface in android phones for example.

Of course, windows phones will also have flash ;) Adobe commented that it hasn't been completed yet but they are working on it in time for end of year release.

It will be interesting to see how it all pans out. It seems like they're going for iphone interface's usability with the pluses of androids cloud integration functionality.. which if pulled off right will sell bucket-loads.

It seems the business community is currently holding its breath to see if MS hasnt forgotten their extensive presence in that area. If WPS7 can make that transition too, they will be dominating in an area iphone and android haven't made a scratch in. (WinMo, Blackberry are the domain of business devices/apps)

anyway, whichever device we have leanings towards, I'm sure we can all agree...competition is good!

iPhones are extraordinarily popular, and there are so many apps I think people will want to stick with that--kind of like people wanting to stick with Windows back in the 90's because there were a lot more programs for it. Three of the gals at my office have iPhones, not one of them worries about Apple bloatware. However, they couldn't tell you what bloatware meant in the first place--they'd probably say 'is that the feeling you get at a certain time of the month when you retain too much water?' with a confused look on their faces, before checking facebook again.

I agree completely on that--it'll drive the price of all these devices down, and hopefully will improve the connection speeds on all of them as they try to compete with speed as well as number of apps/ease of use/'cool factor'/etc. My cell carrier has already improved the speed of its network just in the last 18 months or so, and my LG Tritan phone is quite a bit faster than the Windows network that I had been using before with my older smartphone. In terms of number of apps/ease of use/'cool factor', everyone has a ways to go to catch up to Apple. The Zune is a distant 2nd to the iPod, and I suspect since the iPhone has held on to a near-monopoly for so long that it will be extremely difficult for competitors even to come close to meeting the same market share as Apple, much less surpassing it.

LMAO....I'm glad I dont work where you do Jae :thmbup1:

The last person I encountered with an iphone was our network admin at work. He called it a piece of crap and insisted his wife made him get one because she had one and there was a deal of some sort... :thmbup1: He said he wanted a Blackberry, since he actually needs to do productivity related things on it.

A quick look in your installed proggie list will show you what I mean about itunes... mind you windows live suite is just as annoying now :p

I thought the era of cloud computing would remove all this local junk on our pcs and all we'd need is a browser...obviously not :raise:

It's because of that the portable installs are becoming increasing popular. I run FF, Chromium and Office 2007 as portable install nowdays. As I jump between W7 and Vista it makes it pretty handy rather than requiring duplicate installations.
