*Don*
Alright, there are plenty of conspiracy theories out there. Many of them are farfetched and dubious but there are others that are believable. Which theories do you find feasible? Personally, I think that the JFK assasination along with the 23 theory are good examples.
Arcesious
I propose a new conspiracy possibility: Microsoft and Linux are secretly working together to make more money off of customers...
Achilles
I guess it depends on whether we want to discuss "conspiracy theories" as the term is intended or the bastardized "conspiracy theories" term that is more commonly used (usually as a pejorative). For instance, that 19 muslim men hijacked 4 planes and flew 3 of them into American landmarks on September 11th, 2001 is a conspiracy theory. So is the story that the entire thing was orchestrated by the U.S. government. However only one of these is generally referred to as a "conspiracy theory" even though both are. With this is mind, understand that all of these situations are instances in which you are invited to judge which conspiracy theory is more plausible (did John Wilkes Booth act alone or did Castro seek revenge, etc). DarthJebus05
As some of you may have seen, the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory was explained, saying bombs were planted in the towers, and that other building a few blocks away fell down for no apparent reason. The more I look at the videos and articles, I'm pretty sure something else was happening other than those planes crashing into the towers. Fireman said there were bombs in one of the towers and told everyone to evacuate. I suppose we will never find out what happened on 9/11.
SilentScope001
For instance, that 19 muslim men hijacked 4 planes and flew 3 of them into American landmarks on September 11th, 2001 is a conspiracy theory. I do agree that we shouldn't use bastardized terms when we should actually mean what the words say. Another thing I would like to add: A conspiracy is a basically secret plan to do something that is ILLEGAL. That means, breaking the law. And not only that, but a conspiracy also has to not be completed. If the conspiracy succeds, and the crime is actually committed, then it can no longer be a conspiracy. So, terrorists plotting to hijack airplanes and crashing it into a building, that would be breaking the law, and hence would be a conspiracy. However, if the government begin to plot to blew up the buildings, and since whatever the government does can be considered perfectly legal (as the government makes the actual laws, you know), it cannot at all be considered a conspiracy. And if either the terrorists or the government actually acted to blow up buildings, then they can no longer be accused of engaging in a conspiracy, but rather, of the charge of blowing up buildings. *Don*
Although I feel that 9/11 was the work of terrorists, I also cant help but feel that the gov is trying to hide something. Thats why I feel as if conspiracy theorists are sometimes right.
Achilles
I suppose we will never find out what happened on 9/11. I think the same can be said for any event in which a "conspiracy theory" exists. Doesn't mean that the "official story" isn't true, but neither does it mean that the "black helicopter crowd" is wrong. Just means that the jury is out. JediMaster12
Where is mach when you need him? Our resident critic has some interesting musing on the subject of conspiracy theories. Me I personally I think our governmet capable of anything in doing things without our knowledge. Anyone remember Watergate?
Achilles
I absolutely agree that nothing stays silent forever, but I think your example is flawed. If Watergate were conducted by, oh say the CIA, instead of sitting President with emotional issues, I'm pretty sure even a Freedom of Information Act request wouldn't give us everything. Ask yourself this: if some information did get out (like might happen if there were a breach, as you suggested), what would it look like? A "conspiracy theory" maybe? *shrugs* All it takes is a few moments with our gov't's record with covert operations overseas to see that we are *capable* of all kinds of stuff. So the only remaining question is: would we do that sort of stuff to our own citizens? Some people say yes. Others say no.

mimartin
I'm pretty sure Castro killed Lincoln. Well he is certainly old enough. Perhaps Castro is responsible for Lincoln, Kennedy and William Henry Harrison deaths, not to mention stealing our current Presidents brain. Det. Bart Lasiter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MKULTRA I believe pretty much everything associated with that is true with the exception of the JFK tie in. I wrote a research paper on it a few years back and the CIA did some sick **** to civilians and Army personnel and I wouldn't put anything past them. One incident in particular got a man killed - although that seems pretty merciful considering what they did to them first.
Achilles
...which of course became the foundation for the KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation manual created by the CIA in 1963. Love that Cameron basically got away with everything.
mimartin
Me I personally I think our government capable of anything in doing things without our knowledge. Not the government of the United States of American! What is our government capable of doing without our knowledge? Human experiments lasting 40 years and then taking another 25 years for the government to actually apologize for the atrocities committed. Darth InSidious
Don't forget that the Archbishop of New York and the Black Pope have been manipulating history since 1945. I believe none. Eventually, the truth will out - until then, I'm pretty certain that the mindless speculations of the intellectually lightweight and utterly paranoid are _not_ going to contain the truth.
