SW01
It was indeed an interesting find, and I found it particularly intriguing to read that a Roman commander, a proconsul no less, was enslaved and put in the arena. But then, with Commodus anything was possible. I wish the article would have gone into greater detail in showing the links between Macrinus and Maximus - were they both on the Germanian frontier? Did Macrinus show defiance to Commodus in the same way as is portrayed in Gladiator - and indeed in the earlier version, 'The Fall of the Roman Empire'? Such a pity that one of the only written sources on that period is mostly balderdash... Of course, while this gladiator did not kill Commodus, and while the Republic was not restored after his death, it would be nice to read something on the parallels between storytelling and historical reality. Astrotoy7
Hic Iacet Sepultus Marcus Nonius Macrinus Im sure the former Proconsul of Asia had no inkling that he would be such a great bit of publicity for a Ridley Scott flick 2 millennia hence mtfbwya
Prime
Especially since he would have no idea what a "flick" is.
