SOMI:SE Artwork

I'm still not happy about those ships - I know some of you think it's great, and hey maybe it is, but it just doesn't feel right to me. I know Melee would have a dock, and blah blah blah. I just loved that desolate feeling out back when you crept into the kitchen.

Yeah, there is definitely a charm to that desolation... but then you can always press a magic button to switch back to that.

The way I see it, each version has its pluses and minuses.

I like some of EMI's backgrounds, but it is a mixed bag, and its partly down to personal taste.

Some of the background foliage isn't great, but generally I think that's nice... actually, a SE EMI would be a bigger improvement on the original than a SMI SE edition. EMI was good, in my opinion, but it could have done with a bit more "polish."

I think the biggest mark they're putting on the SMI SE graphics is the curly clouds, which makes sense. It's unique to Monkey Island. The series has emerged as its own recognisable identity, and those clouds are part of that. It's all about the curls.

For whatever reason I used to really like the backgrounds in EMI until I went to school to learn 3D graphics myself. Now I see how cheap a lot of it is and that the amount of polish in some things like the real time character models and certain super lo-res textures could have been added with almost no extra effort. It sort of makes me mad and makes me think either the art director or whole art team was lazy. It was never that bad in Grim Fandango.

That said, EMI certainly has a mood and atmosphere that is achieved pretty well, especially through the nighttime pre-rendered background of Melee Island. All of that polish they didn't do on 3D objects and characters, as well as just cleaning up cluttered 3D backgrounds could have really set the game apart. It makes me angry because the game was so close with the graphics, among other things.

Yeah I definitely agree. I wish they had really spent more time on the character designs though, if anything. I'm not too upset about the backgrounds being redone for the most part, since a lot of the original SMI were somewhat sterile or cluttered sometimes.

I feel I'll be much more upset if anything except scanning the original backgrounds happens for the seemingly inevitable MI2 remake.

Just in case anyone from LucasArts IS reading this, I don't want it to descend into a purely critical thread. I mean lets face it, none of us can wait for this Special Edition, overall I think it's absolutely fantastic. I haven't been this excited about a game, even a brand new game, for years. Patrik's background art at the top of the thread may be more TRUE to the original, but hell it's a special edition, and special editions have every right to have more... stuff. So thanks to them for actually making the thing, all we're really complaining about is Guybrush :)

I agree, I think the team does deserve a lot of credit for how well it's done. I mean, most film and game remakes are so far off hitting the magic of the original — here we have something that is genuinely very faithful, and really captures the original feel IMO.

I think the fact the majority of it is so good is what's causing the little issues like Guybrush's hair to stand out like sore thumbs.
