Star Wars: The Sith Resurrection Part VII: A Glimmer of Hope

"Get back, they can easily overrun us if we're not careful." Kalla instructed the group, ushering them towards the door.

"Tonatius, I think you may be right. It's been too easy so far." Lenatha pointed out.

"We may very well be walking into a trap." Kalla surmised. "Think about it. That Guardsman hadn't been exposed to the virus nearly long enough to succumb to the effects, the bodies here are laid out far too perfectly, and this door should have been a lot more secure." She then ushered the group through the door, only for it to seal itself behind them. "No turning back now." She commented.

Haruka looked at the Jedi as if she were out of her mind. he replied, "Shinigami are not known to be exactly sentient friendly. They have been known to achieve objectives through any means necessary. The Force Sensitive ones are the best in terms of gaining secrets and such since they have this adaptive ability to camoflage themselves even against Jedi. Shinigami are deadly when it comes to their duties. You want to know how I know? Well most everyone born Avalonian knows about them. They are stuff of legend especially in how they actually are said to have saved the Jedi once."

Meanwhile Tavaryn was listening closely to what the Geonosian was telling him. If there are autotargeting lasers, they would have to be disabled otherwise should Jun-la or the others happen upon them, they would be cut down. He asked, "Do you know of another way like a ventilation shaft that could get us in?"

"I have a bad feeling about this," Tonatius muttered. He didn't stay his sword for a single moment as they walked through. "This place smells of death."

"Do you know of another way like a ventilation shaft that could get us in?"

The Geonosian turned to the group assembling behind him and began chittering in it's own language. Alriana couldn't make out what he was saying. Finally the leader turned back to Tavaryn after a few moments. "The Imperial base used to be one of our nests. There are only two entrances and one of them is heavily guarded. However, the one entrance that the destroyers do not know of is located near the entrance. It is far away enough that the auto-targeting cannons can't detect them, but it is close enough that if someone were to try and use it they would be seen and shot down."

The Geonosian paused for a moment. "My warriors are prepared to engage the destroyers at the main entrance in order to create a diversion so that you may enter the base."

ISD Glory

Even as Beroc entered the bridge he could tell that something was wrong. The helm control was blinking. One of the stormtroopers ran over to the helm controls. "Sir! helm control has been locked out. As of right now the ship is in hyperspace and is heading back toward Imperial controlled space at maximum speed."

Beroc looked down at the captain who was begining to wake up. "Captain." Beroc said looking down at him, "You stand accused of working with the sith and attempting to arrest the Supreme commander of the Imperial fleet. The sentence is death and is to be carried out as soon as we reach imperial controlled space."

Beroc walked over to the helm controls and looked down. "We are currently seven minutes away from the fringes of Imperial space." He looked down at the captain of the glory and smiled grimly. "You should have thought about betraying the Imperial fleet and working with the sith."

On the edge of what remains of Imperial Space....

Grand Admiral Khorzan Velerc stood silently on the deck of his Pellaeon-Class Star Destroyer, The "Death's Head."

In Velerc's own opinion, he had seen far too much happen to his Empire, so much that was familiar had been dashed to pieces. With the New Empire fractured in two, one half loyal to the few aging High-ranking officers and the other half pledging its allegiance to the Sith, it wouldn't take long for a full capitulation to the Republic to take place.

He had no idea how much longer they could hold the Empire together, but as Grand Admiral, he resolved that the Empire would reach either fruitation or complete devastation. And with the revealing of his daughter, Belina, and the defection of one of his most trusted and promising officers, Garja, that mission was much harder.

"Grand Admiral, we have confirmation of an ISD incoming from hyperspace...it's codes match that of the ISD Glory. According to the log, it went missing some time ago...suspected to be a defector due to its affiliation with Beroc....."

Velerc brought his focus back to the present, turning to face his adjutant.

"Well, it is safe to say they aren't exactly the model Imperials we'd hope they'd be....prepare gravity wells and activate them as soon as they enter Imperial space..."

The Adjutant saluted, "Yes, Grand Admiral, it shall be so."

Velerc turned away, staring out of the viewport into the great beyond.

ISD Glory

"Do you seriously think having me executed will make a difference? I am simply one of many who chose to follow Lord Pestilus. The New Empire has been falling apart since Bastion, and Velerc's disappearance only made matters worse. Joining Lord Pestilus is the only way to ensure our dominance in the galaxy." Captain Thek retorted.

New Imperial Base, Geonosis

"We need to keep moving, come on." Kalla said to Tonatius, fruitlessly trying to reassure him. "There's someone else alive down here." She commented.

"Very perceptive, Kaltas." A voice called out from the shadows, the same voice Tonatius heard in head earlier.

"I know that voice. Who are you?" Kalla asked him.

"I am that which you fear the most. Search your feelings, Jedi, you know it to be true." The voice called back.

Kalla started to feel her anxiety build up, but she stood her ground. "That means nothing. Give me a name." Kalla responded.

"I am Darth Pestilus, Dark Lord of the Sith, and you have fallen into my trap."

The New Empire has been falling apart since Bastion, and Velerc's disappearance only made matters worse. Joining Lord Pestilus is the only way to ensure our dominance in the galaxy."

Beroc stared down at Captain Thek before pulling his blaster pistol out of it's holster and aiming it directly at Thek's head.

"I have faith that your execution will at least show our men that following Pestilus is a bad idea. He is a sith and sith know nothing but betrayal."

Just as Beroc was about to pull the trigger and end Thek's life, the sensor display began to flash. One of Beroc's troopers ran over to the sensor control station and another ran over to the helm.

The one at the helm smiled briefly. "We are now entering Imperial controlled space. It looks like we're in the clear."

The solder who had ran at to the sensor station activated the sensors and his eye's went wide. "Grand Admiral Beroc, there appears to be ships waiting for us.

Beroc narrowed his eyes. "Are we still locked out of the helm?"

"Yes sir. I'm working on trying to get past the encryptions but it's taking longer then I expected. We do have weapons however."

Beroc shook his head. They couldn't fire weapons or raise shields while in hyperspace and he didn't know who was waiting for them or what type of ships they had. This was a situation he would rather not be in.

New Imperial Base, Geonosis

"You did all this? You monster!" Lenatha responded to the Sith Lord's revelation.

"You are so quick to judge, but let me ask you something, Doctor: Would Ariel have approved of what you did?" Darth Pestilus asked the Twi'lek.

Lenatha paused. She had so much to think about. How could he have known? What would Ariel have thought of what she did to Jamiro? At the same time, all those questions were pushed aside by her anger.

"How dare you even mention her!" She shouted back, taking out her blaster, and almost firing before being held back by Kalla. "I know you're angry, but don't do anything stupid." She advised.

"Ah yes, the fearless leader, so much like your father, but do you really think you can live up to your family's legacy?" He then asked Kalla, but Kalla wouldn't hear of it.

"Is demoralising us all you plan on doing? The thought of you may terrify me, but you don't seem to live up to your reputation." Kalla replied.

"Perhaps I was wrong about you, Kaltas." Pestilus commented.

ISD Glory

"Do you see what I mean? Even if those are Imperial, there's no way to know if they're on your side. You should have joined Lord Pestilus when you had the chance." Captain Thek responded, awaiting his execution.

"Ships dropping out of hyperspace, Grand Admiral. Gravity wells activated."

Velerc watched as the ISD Glory suddenly appeared from the black void that was space. It seemed miniscule in comparison to his flagship "Death's Head," and that image only increased with the knowledge that many other capital ships were accompanying him.

Let's try and take this ISD alive....the Empire is shattered enough.., Velerc thought.

He looked to a nearby lieutenant saying, "Prepare boarding party and deploy fighter squadrons 1 and 2. Have 3 and 4 hang back in reserve....the rest of the squadrons will be on alert if they're needed."

"Yes Grand Admiral."

Velerc turned from his command console and began walking down the main catwalk between the two command trenches in the bridge.

"Patch me through to the bridge of that ISD. I want a secure channel and an ID on all officers present in their response."

The crew acknowledged, moving efficiently to commence their orders.

((CQ, how would you like it if most of Beroc's fleet decided to join up with you? :)))

"Do you see what I mean? Even if those are Imperial, there's no way to know if they're on your side. You should have joined Lord Pestilus when you had the chance."

Beroc looked down at Thek and was finally about to end the life of this traitor when the ship suddenly lurched to a halt, sending Beroc to the floor alongside Thek.

Beroc stagered to his feet and pointed at Thek. "Keep him secured and give me a reason we dropped out of hyperspace."

The officer at the helm got up and stood over Captain Thek while another ran to the sensor station. "It looks like we were pulled out of Hyperspace by a gravity well generator."

Beroc held up his hand to silence the officer and then looked at the viewscreen as a large ship appeared in front of them.

"What is the ID on that ship?"

The stormtrooper at the sensor control looked over his readings. "ID on the ship reads as the Star Destroyer "Death's Head". Last affiliated with Grand Admiral Velerc and served as his flagship. Listed as missing."

Beroc's face turned slightly pale. Velerc was a master strategist, the only sentient who had ever forced him to retreat was his daughter, Admiral Belina. If the Grand Admiral was on that ship...

The Grand Admiral's thoughts were interupted by a stormtroopers calm voice ringing out through the otherwise quiet bridge. "Incoming transmission from the Death's Head. Transmission is being directed directly at the bridge."

Beroc took a deep breath and his confidence returned. Belina had nearly been beaten at Geonosis by him and his fleet was even now dropping out of hyperpsace all around him. If this was Velerc he would regret showing himself again.

"Open a channel, and make sure that the rest of the fleet can hear this." He said to the stormtrooper. "This is Grand Admiral Beroc, supreme commander of the Imperial Fleet. Identify yourself."

((This is Tysyacha, temporarily stepping in as the original Andorra))

"Pestilus." Her lips became a firm, pink line. "After all this time, here you are, and after all this death and destruction, still you remain. I originally thought the source of the plague of undead to be a virus, either something natural or lab-created, but definitely not the work of a bioengineered gas. Using those who were once alive, and newly 'resurrected', as shock troopers was a grand idea, if not exactly an original one. However, why would you ever take such a risk with a vapor that could poison even you? You've made yourself fully immune, haven't you? Tell me: what advantage do slaves who are both dead and alive have over the more traditional variety? Lack of intelligence and rational thought isn't always an advantage, as you are soon to find out."

"None, but the New Empire doesn't realise that. I didn't deploy the gas initially, they did." Pestilus explained. "But you're part of the New Empire. You're as much to blame for this as they are." Lenatha pointed out.

"They have become a hindrance. They have been utterly useless since my predecessor's demise. Your leader should know all about that." Pestilus retorted.

"He's right, Lenatha, I'm the one who killed Darth Virul permanently." Kalla explained.

"But the Sith live on!" Darth Pestilus added.

"Is that it? Scare tactics and bio-weapons?" Kalla asked. "I'm not impressed."

"Hardly." Pestilus replied, reaching for his lightsaber, but Kalla, anticipating his move, managed to activating hers at almost the exact same instant he activated his. The two of them leapt forward, locking blades instantly.

"Get to the labs! I'll hold him off!" Kalla called out to Tonatius, Andorra, and Lenatha.

The blue light indicating that the transmission was accepted blinked in a rapid fashion in front of Velerc. It was now time to show his hand at last.

"This is Grand Admiral Beroc, supreme commander of the Imperial Fleet. Identify yourself."

The greeting caused an uncharacteristic smirk to appear on Velerc's face.

"You've taken on airs, Beroc. I suppose it wasn't entirely unexpected, due to the rivalry between you and Garja....hmmm. Let's hope you remember where your true loyalties lie."

Velerc looked to the Deck Lieutenant, who was awaiting his orders. He gave a quick nod, and the lieutenant punched a key in the vast control board that occupied the starboard wall.

Almost instantly, boarding vessels and TIE-Defenders could be seen from the bridge, making their approach to the ISD Glory.

"According to old Imperial Law, you have committed an act of mutiny, moving with impunity and declaring yourself commander of the fleet....this caused great confusion in what remains of our Empire. If we are to survive, an example must be made of. Do not resist, and who knows, maybe the court martial will let you go with your life and commission."

The Grand Admiral hoped that Beroc wouldn't make any rash decisions. The Empire was fragile as it was, and a power struggle was the last thing it needed.

Beroc knew that that voice he heard was that of the former Supreme commander of the Imperial fleet before he had even finished speaking. His face paled but he kept his composure as what remained of his fleet began to form up around him.

"I will not allow you to speak to me that way Admiral Velerc. You were forced to retreat when you fought your own daughter and-"

One of the stormtroopers shouted out in alarm as an alarm began to blare throughout the bridge of the star destroyer.

"Admiral Beroc! Our fleet!"

Beroc didn't need to hear the trooper to finish. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. I...this can't be happening.

Beroc watched in silent disbelief as a large portion of his fleet moved directly past the bridge of the Glory and began to form up behind velerc's ship. "Admiral Beroc, I have intercepted a transmission from the Star Destroyer Alaco to Admiral Velerc's flagship. Patching it through to the bridge now."

"Admiral Velerc, this is Captain Retec of the Imperial Star Destroyer Alaco. I speak for those among us that still follow neither Beroc nor the new Dark Lord of the Sith. We follow the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet. We knew that if we followed Beroc we would one day find you again. Rest assured that you have our support in detaining Beroc."

Beroc looked at the trooper who had intercepted the transmission and then looked out the viewports as more and more ships continued to form up behind Velerc.

"I know that I will not survive with my comission if I surrender." He said quietly. "You will simply throw me in an Imperial Prison and let me die. The weapons aboard my ship may be damaged but I will repel your boarding parties with the best of my abilities."

"You will simply throw me in an Imperial Prison and let me die. The weapons aboard my ship may be damaged but I will repel your boarding parties with the best of my abilities."

Velerc clenched his teeth, "Don't be stupid, Beroc....don't make yourself an enemy. You have little faith in your Empire...so don't kill your own men. I promise a fair trial, don't make me change that promise."

He gave a quick glance to the Deck Lieutenant again and gave a hand signal to begin offensive operations and to prepare the fleet for an attack. With luck, the situation could be diffused, and Imperial lives could be saved....or the 'Glory' would be totally destroyed, setting an example and saving Imperial lives, either way would fit Velerc's purposes.

Beroc sighed heavily and looked around at his stormtroopers and the still out-cold bridge crew of the Glory and then he sighed again. It was not their fault that Captain Thek had decided to follow the Dark Lord and he felt that they deserved a chance to live and pledge their loyalty to the Empire.

A man should never go back on his word, not like that traitor Garja who deserted and decided to join the enemy. Admiral Velerc is a tactical mastermind and he always keeps his word.

"Very well Admiral Velerc." He said quietly as his troopers looked him over. "But as of right now we only control the bridge. You have my word that my men will not fire on your boarding parties but the captain of the Glory has decided to follow the new Dark Lord and I can't speak for his men. Your boarding parties may encounter resistance from Thek's crew. And in return for my surrender I have one condition: The men who followed me must not be harmed, they are the only survivors from the Imperial Pride besides myself and they were only following my orders."

"Very well Admiral Velerc."

Velerc let a sigh of relief penetrate his visage of authority. With luck, all resistance would be like this, able to coped with without any form of combat.

"But as of right now we only control the bridge. You have my word that my men will not fire on your boarding parties but the captain of the Glory has decided to follow the new Dark Lord and I can't speak for his men. And in return for my surrender I have one condition: The men who followed me must not be harmed, they are the only survivors from the Imperial Pride besides myself and they were only following my orders."

This complicated things, but at least the ship could be taken without destroying it.

"Well then, Admiral, we shall keep our words and agree with your condition...they will not be harmed. A fair court martial will be arranged, and I assure you, the right decision will be reached....now, hold your position. My men will be able to assist you with any of....Thek's mutinous crewmen."

Velerc was about to shut down the link when a thought popped into his mind.

"Welcome back, Admiral Beroc."

He then ended the transmission and folded his hands behind his back, a smile creasing his partially scarred face.

Suddenly, one of his lieutenants, Od'vil Remper, approached.

"Grand Admiral...are you really going to provide a court martial for...that...traitor?"

Velerc's smile disappeared, and his face hardened once again.

"First of all, Lieutenant Remper, do not question my orders ever. Secondly, yes. He may not be a traitor at all....our Empire must grow...it must be nourished, so that one day, we will be great once again. We will trample the New Republic underneath the boots of our storm troopers. They will feel the righteous wrath of our kind once again. We will be more then we once were....and we won't be influenced by....those failed Jedi, those ancient believers. We will stamp out all resistance and build anew...but only if we handle the situation right. Right now, that's giving him the fair trial."

Velerc turned on his heel and left the bridge, leaving temporary command to his XO.

"Welcome back, Admiral Beroc."

Beroc looked relieved as the transmission ended. It looked like the Grand Admiral believed him and had decided not to destroy him out of anger. Any crew member of the Glory that was still loyal to the empire would be given another chance to serve.

One of the stormtroopers who was manning one of the consoles looked over at Beroc. "Sir. Admiral Velerc's boarding craft are now landing in the main hanger bay. I'm not detecting any weapons fire."

Beroc sighed in relief. It looked like at least some of the crew were loyal to the Empire and not the Dark lord.

The stormtrooper at the console then turned back to Beroc. "Hold on sir...detecting blaster fire on deck 12. I'm also reading a large number of lifesigns gathering on decks 11 and 12. I am attempting to contact the lead squadron."

Beroc walked to the Captain's chair and hit a series of buttons so that he could open up a transmission to the section of the ship that Velerc's forces were currently located in.

"This is Admiral Beroc contacting the troops under Velerc's command. We are reading a large gathering of lifesigns taking up position on decks 11 and 12. You may be walking into an ambush. We will continue to notify you of any changes.

Beroc turned to Captain Thek and smiled grimly at him. "I will leave you to Admiral Velerc's mercy."

ISD Glory

"I don't think so. I still have the command codes to this ship, which means I can do this: Initiate Auto-Destruct Sequence, authorisation Thek 3-8 Krenth Dorn. Maximum blast radius. I'm dead either way, but I can take all of you with me, and that's still a victory for the Undying Sith Empire." Thek replied, and with that, the bridge was bathed in a red light, and computerised voice started counting down from five minutes.

Beroc's eyes widened and he quickly pulled out his blaster and shot Thek in the back. He didn't care what the blaster was set for just as long as Thek couldn't do any more damage.

He immediatly turned on the intercom so that everyone else on the ship could hear him. "Attention all hands: This is Admiral Beroc. Captain Thek has initiated a self-destruct set for five minutes. I advise you all to get to the nearest escape pods. Admiral Velerc's ships are standing by, as soon as the pods leave set course for Velerc's flagship."

He motioned for his men to grab the bridge officers and then shot Thek again for good measure before opening up a comnline to Velerc's ship. "Grand Admiral Velerc, this is Admiral Beroc. Captain Thek managed to initiate a self-destruct. I am ordering all crew members to evacuate the Glory and head for your ship."

Beroc then motioned for his men to follow him as he ran toward the escape pods with him men close behind him.

Self-destruct in four minutes.

Geonosis

Andorra and Lenatha finally made it into the labs, and Andorra sealed the door behind them.

"I'll see what I can do on this terminal, I need you to keep the zombies out of here!" Lenatha called out to Andorra. Wow, the New Empire really dumbed it down with this setup, but at the very least it should make my work easier. She thought, examining the terminal in front of her. "I'll need to devise something that's essentially the antithesis of the original virus: universally applicable, able to neutralise the gas on contact, but otherwise harmless." She explained.

Tavaryn nodded in response. "We have to hurry then. I sense that the leader of the destroyers is on the move." He looked at Alriana and asked, "How fast is your force run?"

Tonatius had never know true fear until he met Darth Pestilus. When he heard the voice for real, it felt as if his bones froze. Looking at the evil embodiment he was not sure of what to do. It was Kalla that brought back some sanity to his mind by telling him to go.

He couldn't leave her and his blade was drawn. He swung to block a blow that would have surely killed Kalla and said to Pestilus, "You made a mistake showing your face." He then called, "R4 get them out."

R4 did what he was told and when Andorra sealed the door, he scanned the terminal. When Lenatha was about to use it, he beeped wildly and loudly, telling her to stop.

"You will not stop me. Under my leadership, the Sith shall return once more, stronger than ever before!" Pestilus shouted back, taking a swing at Tonatius only to be blocked by Kalla.

"I was terrified of you at first, but now I see you're just talk." Kalla retorted, attempting to counter the Sith Lord's use of Dun Möch with her own. However, she was anticipating the boomerang effect, and she would be able to exploit it. Everything Pestilus did was so carefully calculated, and if she could push him to anger, he might just start to make mistakes.

"R4, I'm here to put a stop to the infection, so I hope you have a good reason for telling me to get away from the console." Lenatha responded to the droid, but still stepping away from the terminal.

R4 began a series of frantic beeps that sounded like a warning. As if by activating the console they could be causing trouble more than stopping it. He continued his frantic beeps hoping that Andorra or the doc would understand.

Meanwhile Tonatius and Kalla were fighting off Pestilus. Tonatius saw that Kalla was trying to achieve a boomerang effect. It was a good tactic but somehow he doubted that it would really work. Still it was worht a try. He said to Kalla, "He may be all talk but I seriously doubt he has any talent with the Force."

"Grand Admiral Velerc, this is Admiral Beroc. Captain Thek managed to initiate a self-destruct. I am ordering all crew members to evacuate the Glory and head for your ship."

Having just come back from a briefing with a few Imperial Generals, this news was terrible to put it lightly.

Velerc had to keep all his physical and mental capacities under control as he refrained from slamming a fist into the side of the bulkhead. He maintained a calm posture, as he knew that if he lost composure, morale and respect would be also lost.

He merely gave a disappointed sigh, turning away for a quick minute to think.

So...evacuation and the loss of yet another Star Destroyer....whatever force controls us, it is not on my side.

Suddenly, a plan came to mind. He turned back around to the transmission.

"Beroc...the Star Destroyer can still be saved...albeit, damaged. My first warning is simple, get into the most heavily protected section of your ship...any place away from your power reserves."

Velerc looked to one of his deck lieutenants.

"Give the order to concentrate all firepower on the power-generators."

He looked back to the transmission.

"My plan...is well, remarkably simple. Yet extremely risky. We're going to open fire on your power supply...and in doing so will short out all systems, minus life-support, luckily. This should stop the self-destruct and save the majority of the crew...do I have your cooperation?"

Beroc continued running but instead of running toward the escape pods he turned down another hallway toward auxillary control as Velerc's message rang through the corridors. As soon as he reached auxillary control he opened up another communications line to Velerc's ship.

"Yes Admiral. But from what I'm reading most of the Glory's crew has already left the ship via the escape pods. As of now I am reading only thirty lifesigns aboard the Glory counting my men and I."

He turned to look at his men and smiled slightly despite the situation. If this didn't work then the Empire wouldn't lose that much. They would only lose a star destroyer and the remaining thirty crewmembers left aboard.

"The remaing crew are all now in safe locations and my men and I are in auxillary control. Open fire on the power generators when ready."

Geonosis

"How fast is your force run?"

"It's fast enough." Alriana replied with a slight smile on her face. "Most of my abilities were rusty due to being in deep freeze for as long as I was but as of now I should be at my best."
