Because I choose my games of the year based on when I played them, independently of when they were released, and only games I have actually finished, my list is (and since I haven't had a decent computer for years, some will be a couple of years old).

 

Best story/writing: Alpha Protocol, heck it even made me like archetypes I usually want to stab (like Sie). Runner up: Fallout NV

Best game play: Tied Human revolution and New Vegas

Most believable world: Deus ex HR

Most mature (as in dealing with mature themes): New Vegas

Best mechanics I hope other games emulate: AP: making almost every small decision matter in a sensible way(also only having to kill one named guy in the entire game is a nice touch).

Best strategy: King Arthur the role playing war game

Biggest disappointment: Skyrim

Game of the year: Alpha Protocol, because it's a game that actually keeps the "every choice has consequences" promise.

While I agree with almost everything murph says here, wasn't AP a 2010 release?

 

While Skyrim is consuming more of my time than should be considered healthy, there's no doubt that it's severely overrated and that both FO:NV and DX:HR got robbed.

I did both, though the runner-up thread doesn't seem to be getting much attention. :( I'll leave next year to the master, then. ;)

You're not alone in that. Only one of those I'm likely to play anytime soon may be TOR if/when some of the early levels are free (so as to compete w/mmo's like WoW, etc..).
