Cyberpunk (CD Projekt RED's next game)

So at their summer conference, CD Projekt RED, creators of The Witcher and The Witcher 2, have announced their new project, Cyberpunk. It's based on the pen & paper RPG of the same name written by Mike Pondsmith. Pondsmith is apparently heavily involved in the project. Not many details as yet, but if you like RPGs and Blade Runner-esque settings, this will be one to keep an eye on.

I would suspect it will have similar elements to Deus Ex and Alpha Protocol: provision for stealth, hacking, and straight out pew pew combat. I hope in that regard that it is broader than The Witcher. While it gave you some choice in specialisation, focusing on potions, magic, or swordplay, ultimately whichever way you went it was still basically a straight up action hack n' slash. If Cyberpunk just turns out to be a generic 3rd person shooter (especially a cover shooter) I'll be disappointed.

A teaser trailer is set to be released in about 2 hours and a half from now. I'll be asleep when it comes out, unfortunately, so I'll have to see when I wake up. It will almost certainly be all-CG, and CD Projekt has thrown us two teaser-of-the-teaser images:

Also, for comprehensivenessness, here's an extra publicity image that's been around for a while:

Oh, and those of you who still haven't got it, the game has been officially named Cyberpunk 2077 now.

(This BBCode requires its accompanying plugin to work properly.)

The teaser shows how the Psycho Squad might acquire a new member.

The Psycho Squad specializes in combating "psychos" -- individuals who overuse implants and substances that boost or otherwise alter the human body.

There comes a point when they overdose on these innovations, and their bodies start to rebel against their biological body parts as well as all things organic around them. Simply put, they start killing people, who they now derisively call "meatbags".

When a psycho goes on the rampage, strange things can happen. There's carnage, and the psycho might be taken down by regular police, but they're not always able to get the job done.

When things spin out of control, they call in MAX-TAC (Maximum Force Tactical Division), popularly called the Psycho Squad.

Really digging the HK-47 nod there. :D

Interesting, this ties in very closely with an anime that came out in the previous season, called Psycho-Pass (in Japanese, a homonym of 'psychopath'). It is also cyberpunk, has a thick Blade Runner-Human Revolution vibe, and involves killers who go on rampages, and the police *hiring* some of these killers to hunt other killers (similar to what happens in this trailer).

Always the pre-rendered CG. Sounds like it might be a while before we actually see any in-game content.

They are trying to make the in-game graphics as close to the teaser as possible. Thus the 2015 release date.

And the other project that they plan to announce on the 5th of February? Wanna bet it's gonna be Witcher 3? :D

That's a no-brainer. ;)

I think it's important that Pondsmith talks about Cyberpunk not being about humanity and the danger of technology to humanity, which was what Human Revolution mainly was about. Not that that is a bad thing, but there's more to the genre than that. Anyway, thinking about all of this stuff makes me realize I should dig into the cyberpunk genre a bit more. :)

Oh, and the music in that Pondsmith video, I hope it's from the soundtrack, because I like!
