Guest Krayt Tion
From what I understand the 5 mill reward for bin Laden has been out for years. It might seem like a much more acceptable time to claim the reward these days, but from a pure monetary standpoint, people have had plenty of time already to take the bait and haven't. The thought of ground assault in that place makes my stomach churn. Ground forces en masse, spec ops forces, I fear for the safety of all of them in that place. I too hope there is just some way to do this neatly although deep I don't feel very reassured. I hope that it isn't necessary, but not to the point where it would stand in the way of striking a initial blow against the Al Qaeda network. The possibility does indeed still exist that we won't have to engage the Taliban to mess with Al Qaeda. Bush as said they have no quarrel with the people of Afghanistan, only the AQ network. Refugee camps are being set up near the Pakistan border and I heard one spokesman say that the US is willing to give some basic aid to Afghans, although I am unclear as whether they said to refugees or people still in the country. I think it might have been those who seek to remain safe and flee their country during these times.

Wilhuf
Taliban 'clerics' have promised 'Holy War' against the US rather than cooperation. Who knows if that is their final decision. I'm neither surprised nor impressed. So, aside from the doomsday speculation about how the Muslim world will magically unite across their more than 20 (often deeply divided) countries to rally against the US if it tries to defend itself against a terrorists led by religious bigots in Southwest Asia, there has been some discussion on TV now on why these Tuesday attacks took place. One discussion I've seen was completely misguided, but actually kind of funny. In an interview with Bill Moyers on PBS yesterday, an internationally respected Muslim scholar, when asked why the September 11th act of hatred against Americans was committed, he said in all seriousness that people in the Middle East are offended by McDonalds. It defies comprehension that a top level scholar could somehow find McDonalds as a meaningful reason for mass murder. If he is right, then some people really need to rethink the political significance of fast food. If people are willing to murder more than 5000 people because of old Ronald McDonald, their cause will amount to nothing, over time. Fortunately he's a religous scholar, not a political expert. Moyers made the good point that Britain, Germany and Greece for instance have plenty of McDonalds restaurants, and yet they don't conduct human-piloted missile attacks against American civilians. The interviewee also indicated that 'people in the middle east' are 'oppressed' by their own governments, which are 'supported' by the US. And yet he could not answer Moyers' question: why not then attack the oppressive ruling governments, instead of the US, in order to bring this oppression to an end? What was supposed to be an enlightening conversation ended up presenting some rather comical ideas.
Wilhuf
A good article from Military Review on why a military response to terrorism is ineffective. Snippet: There are numerous systemic reasons why conventional military capabilities are largely ineffective in preventing or defeating terrorism:13 the asymmetries between conventional warfare and terrorism are profound; the organizational structure of terrorism is significantly below the "threshold of significance" easily addressed by conventional military forces -- identification of the terrorist perpetrators is a daunting challenge; terrorist doctrine is ad hoc and opportunistic; the terrorist chain of command is amorphous; terrorist logistics are small scale; and intelligence requirements differ significantly. Guest Krayt Tion
"Would you like fries with that?" "No, just the slaughter of innocent civilians, super sized." I would wonder then why so many McDonalds are still operating abroad in certain areas, you would think they would all be burned to the ground by now. Wilhuf
LOL! Actually that reminds me of a strange but kinda-sorta funny thing that happened last week. I was watching footage of the devistation in NYC, and the broken windows of a destroyed McDonalds flashed across the screen. I had this weird flash of rage. "They took out Ronald! Now they're asking for it! Nobody messes with the clown."
Syndrix
Yes, you heard it here first, Wilhuf is going to start a holy war of his own because they wrecked a McDonalds. I think that weird flash of rage was due to subliminal advertising. I have to laugh at the Muslim scholar you refer to, that just blows my mind. How could someone be that oblivious and actually believe thats the reason. I mean everyone knows it was because of KFC and that white haired goof they have as a mascott. ShockV1.89
I'll never forget that day. I was walking up the road from the parking lot of my school to get to class, and a friend of mine stopped me and told me that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I figurd he meant a small plane, like a little single engine Cessna or something. Then I got to my class, and heard people talking about the Towers being down, and big passenger jets crashing into them... my teacher confirmed it, she watched it in the teachers lounge. We got sent home, school was closed for the day. Spent the rest of the day scared... Me and my gf tried to give blood the next day, but they were too packed for us. Not that it would have mattered. I think what was scariest was that, after the initial strike and collapse, the EMTs had nothing to do! Thats really disturbing...
