Hmm...i read another magazine review that albiet gave the game a descent rating ripped it for being 2d and for using AOK engine. Well LA openly admited they used the AOK engine but everyone seems to hold it against them like they tired to pull off a scandal under everyone's noses and anothe gripe about 2d egnige so i have the following questions...please feel free to answer them and maybe help me shed some light as to where these gripes are coming from.

 

1. What do you think about Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge; another 2d rts? What did you think about its unit/building scale ratio?

 

2. What do you think about Kohan: Imortal Sovereign another 2d rts? What did you think aobut its unit/building scale ratio?

 

3. what do you think aobut Starcraft; another 2d rts? What did you think about is unit/building scale ratio?

 

4. What do you think about Empire Earth?

 

Anyone brave enough to answer these questions?

Very cool game, engine is very good for 2d ....

Scale isn't realistic but one of the best ..

Hmm, ugly for today, but very cool when released

Scale is ok

Game cool, but can't zoom out enough + ugly for 3d ...

Red Alert 2 is awesome in its gameplay. SWGB and AOK's ES engine bogs down to a slow (and bring) game when too many defensive structures and ranged units are introduced. Since AoK is fast-rate melee-based game, and SWGB introduces more range-based units.

 

Especially when the counter units in SWGB are cheap and plus the new shield gens. But Red Alert takes away this element, and makes ranged-based game much more fun (and swift) to play. Despite that both games are 2d RTS, RA2 handles future-style combat with ease, but its more tactical rather than strategic in comparison with AOK & SWGB's massive economy elements.

StarCraft rocks. Its usually a fast-paced game with some very unique races and execution styles. The scale is somewhat off, but their units are well balanced and each race has more drastic bonuses than SWGB. They dont follow a strict attack-counter unit policy like that of SWGB.

 

EE; way too ambitious, 3D engine is still new and in its' juvenile development age. Much better 3D will be released.

 

LA could have done more with the AoK engine, by changing its unit layout and more differences (not graphics) in bonuses between races. Afterall, AoK's 2D engine is OLD.

5. What do you think about the final release of Force Commander a 3D Rts?

 

might as well tell you why this is important: Force Commander has a bad reputation right? well its one of the only 3D rts games well Empire Earth is, too and its getting a bad rep. so really if LEC had made it 3D would it be any better? In fact in my opinion it would probably be worse especially for those with a slow video card or a poor quality one.

The game was good...but once again it had the problem that is in every Westwood game...you can only build from ONE facility. That is my everlasting gripe about Westwood

As for Unit/building ratio...Everything is nearly the same size...infantry is nearly as tall as the buildings...but that is mainly dismissed because RA2 is a "fun" game and isn't really ment to be "serious"

this game is good...originalish...and fun...

Unit/building ratio...don't know...havn't played it enough

StarCraft is old and out of date...I'll just stop there because alot of people might get offended when I offer my comments on why it is still around :)

could be better...3d with only One basic camera angle...Personally I like Earth 2150 better...

Games like Red Alert 2: Yuri has a huge liberty in creating new units. The level of freedom and creativity is something thats lacked badly in SWGB. For instance, RA2 could get tank bunkers, gatling towers etc units which does Not fit into strict attack-and-counter units like SWGB.

 

The naming system in SWGB had mech destroyers, strike mechs etc etc but what gamers really want is something different from all the civs. Like the ones shown by RA2, if you go to westwood's site and take a look at the units.

 

This is what everyone dislike about SWGB, not that it used an old 2D engine, but the striking similarity between all of the civilizations. LA could have done much better by providing far more creative units from the richness of StarWars universe than what it has now... things like extra infantry unit for one civ, renaming 'strike mechs' to their real unit name, x-wings replacing faster fighters etc etc...

 

RA2: Yuri is one of the most liberal and creative game on a 2D RTS engine, if LA had combined Starwars with elements in RA & AoK, simply put : SWGB would be a HIT.

:D If it weren't for StarCraft I doubt we'd be seeing games like GB and EE. For as old as it is, SC rocks. EE needs work. RA is a good game. I agree that the scale is out of wack but...

RA2 and YR are both great fun but aren't really that deep just build as much as you can and attack. If he's get to your base you pretty much dead. The scale isn't bad for unit a tank is only 8 feet high and 20 long so it's not that big compared to a person the jet are also acceptable. The buildings though tank are made in buildings as big as warehouses and a person inside would be dwarfed plus bullet wouldn't do crap to it also the ship are tiny a destroy is 500 feet long and carrier 1000 they ship are just to small.

 

Haven't played them.

 

SC is allotting of fun deeper then and more complex then RA2 but not up to AOE or GB. The scale is horrid is cut scene BC loom over lines like f*cking gods but in game their only a little bigger then a tank the scale blows but it doesn’t really hurt the game.

 

Empire earth I like I don’t care what others think It’s fine you can’t have a ton of units and great graphics it would lag bad I like being able to fight with modern weapons not blasters or energy blade but gun and bombs. I don’t even think of as 3D ground control or HW are 3D. You can zoom but you can’t turn which means it’s not 3D Plus. Units only look bad if you zoom in real close but you can’t even give order form there so I don’t care. The scale though better then the other is still off but scale will never right because buildings and ships would take up the screen and tanks would be tiny.

Well the purpose of this post was to get people to admit that other games..many other games fall short in the "scale" and "dated 2d engine" department too... RA:YR just came out and it still used the same old 2d graphics and they dont look nearly as detailed as the units in battlegrounds. So now that we put into perspective that other games are STILL using 2d and STILL has scale out of whack, maybe people will get off SWGB's ass about those two areas. :D
