Guest toms
winter olympics closing ceremony.... there is something about seeing kiss on ice with katerina witt in a sheer top at 3am that just blows your mind a bit..... i am told it was N'Sync that did the national anthem... i had vaguely thought it was backstreet boys, but i really didn't care enough to find out. you would think that, with all the great musicians in the us, they would want to find someone who could actually sing to do the anthem infront of billions of viewers... txa1265
That's the thing about 'pop' music, isn't it ... so many people say they hate it, but yet its' very existence depends on being 'popular' ... just like cereal - it is product, and the people producing it are 'spokemodels' ... if it doesn't sell it disappears from the shelf, period. I have been listening to avante-garde jazz since I was in 10th grade, but I still admit to liking some pop music - especially the early 80's stuff that was big when I was in high school. txa1265
So far as I can tell ... it is in the swamp ... was it moved? I hadn't seen it there. But the whole pop-culture interaction thing is a double-edged sword (double bladed saber?) ... take NSync and Episode II, for instance. On the one hand both are part of the popular culture, but in different ways and areas, so that rather than being a good thing, the potential of them being in the film caused an uproar. Guest toms
i have no problem with 'pop' music in general... i just have a problem with the mass-produced, disposable, vanilla pop that we get force fed these days. record companies are just churning out identical bands, with a shelf life of a year or two and with no creative input into the music and no progression in their music. they are famous for being famous, for their looks and for who they are dating, not for their music. 90% of the hit pop records are written by aboyt 5 song writers, all the songs are interchangeable... swap and nsync song for a backstreet boys song or an A1 song and no-one would notice. hell, even the beatles started out as a full on pop boy band, but they progressed creatively... no band these days would be around long enough to do that, even if they were allowed to. in the UK we just sat through Popstars, and Pop Idol on tv... and at the end of it we ended up with a band that sounded just like every other band on the market (first single broke all records... no one bought the next one ) and we now have a potentail pop star who can sing, but his first single is an old westlife song that sonunds like it could have been sung by any of the current boy-band stars... so what was the point????? FINALLY though, pop seems like it might be picking up in the UK, kylie, nelly furtado, so solid crew etc are at least INTERESTING and distinctive... pop music = fine. pop music industry = terrible at the moment. acdcfanbill
i respect any musician who writes their own music, i may not listen to rap a whole lot, but i have to respect the talents they have.... now pop, there is a bunch of writers sitting around selling music to some people who may or may not be able to sing...
