I will probably get on of those cards around May, and Im doing some research

The Radeon is cheaper, but vote based on their performance, and also on how they should perform with future games

The GF3 Ti500 wins most of the benchmarks, but it loses against the Radeon on 3DMark2001

I would personally go with the GeForce 3 line, merely for the fact that it's nVidia. As far as I can see, nVidia isn't going under any time soon... I personally would not make a large investment in ATi right now, since they really can't keep up with nVidia. They go out of business, you're stuck with the drivers you have, while nVidia pumps out drivers constantly. I think the difference between the cards benchmarks aren't a huge deal, either. It might be a lame reason, but that's why I'd go with the GF3 on this one.

The thing ATi pulled with the Q3 benchmarks left a bad taste in my mouth, too. I don't know if they ever justified what happened, but it annoyed me when I read it.

In my opinion, ATI is not a very good company when compared to NVidia. I have had a few of each cards and I have had only bad experiences with the ATI's, the Radeon 32mb DDR being the very worst Ive experienced.

My old favorite card was the NVidia Riva TNT 16mb. It was fast, stable and just an all around good card when I used it. My new favorite, the NVidia GeForce3 Ti200. I really dont need the Ti500 so I opted for the 200. I have heard only good things about this particular chipset. For the typical gamer I would recomend the Ti200, but if you are super hardcore computer guys then the Ti500 would probably suit you better. But the FPS were very similar between the two of them. In most games the Ti500 barely outdid the Ti200 from what I read about them.

Basically, I wouldnt feel the need to go for the Ti500 unless you have alot of cash. If you are willing to pump out that much for it, you might want to wait untill the NEW GeForce4's come out before you make your decision.

IMHO the GeForce3 Ti200 is an EXCELLENT performer for a card that you can get for around $120-140.

hmmm

but how will it perform with future games?

now they can be similar, but maybe the difference will be noticeable in the future

I wont get one of the better GF4s, they are way too expensive, and the cheaper models arent that good apparently

ATi made the Radeon 8500 not to go up against the Geforce 3, but they made it specifically to go up against the Geforce 4, which I think is a feat to accomplish, but doable. Now, next month, Im getting one, and *cough* water cooling *cough*. Going to OC the vid to hell, maybe 400mhz? A bit too high? You tell me:D

I'd have to disagree that ATI produced the 8500 to go up against the GF4. They have another chip in the works codenamed R300 which looks to be a GF4-killer (if they get the drivers right).

Although the Nvidia cards are pretty solid performers, especially in the frame-rate stakes...the FSAA method they use is good, but blurs all of the textures. Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but if a game developer has spent a lot of time making a lot of nice textures...I'd prefer it if I could actually see them using whatever AA mode is available. The 8500's AA mode has a greater performance hit, granted, but it retains the texture quality.

Anyway, I'm not worried about running a game at 200 fps...because I'm not going to be able to tell the difference if the 8500 is 10% slower. I'd rather have a comprehensive feature set and graphical quality than sheer speed. ;)

I guess that means I voted for the Radeon 8500. :D I'll be waiting for the 128Mb version to appear, though, before I get one. ;)

I've never used an ATi card, so I can't really vouch for them, but their hardware is excellent. It's with the drivers they have some slight problems. I hear they are getting better though, so you might want to check up on that.

ATi also has great 2D performance and overall better image quality, if that's important to you.

nVidia has the framerate, at least as of right now. It'll be interesting to hear how the new R300 compares to the GeForce 4 Ti4600.

Best Buy had the Radeon 8500 (64 meg) card for $139 (US) yesterday.

That is a steal of a deal for that price.

The GF3 and R8500 are both great cards you would be happy with either one.

I personally prefer the 8500 because it is:

*directx 8.1 (versus GF3 dirext 8.0)

*1.4 shaders (versus 1.0(I believe)shaders on GF3)

*the R8500 can run more textures in a single pass than the GF3 and GF4.

This is the 1rst Ati card I have ever owned and have heard stories about their less than stellar driver support for their cards but the support for the R8500 has been great (unless you use Linux) and even Anand has said Ati is doing well on driver support compared to the past.

yeah id have to say the same with the above posts they are both good cards you really cant go wrong the new geforce4's coming out arent showing any great improvements so arent really worth it yet but either one of those cards would be a good buy and would handle jk2 along with any other game out there rather easily and should for future games also to a certain extent

the ge3 is fater, more reliable, better effects, better performance

dont worry about truform it IS nice but not worth the sacrifice of missing out on 4xAA in 1600x1200 is q3
