This my not be the right place for this question...but what the hell. We don't have much else to do whiel we are waiting :D

I am going to get a new machine (basically for SOF2 and Jedi Outcast) and I am wondering if it is better to get an AMD or a P4? Most people say AMD but I would like your opinions...

Thanks!

this should definitely be in the swamp, but definitely go with amd...btw, the xp 2100+ is better than the 2000 =) nice try ne way though heh

but, if you CAN wait, wait for amd to put out chips with hammer....they will have intel by their you know what

however, if you have a nice diy attitude, you could make a watercooling system and OC the p4 northwood...ive seen it run @3ghz stably.....and @ that speed, xp doesnt have a chance (even though intel still sucks)...they got q3 to run non 3d card @ 308fps....hehe

I have an AMD Athlon 1GHz and it works great. I too don't care much for Pentium anymore. Not since my Pentium II a couple years back anyway....

-edit-

I forgot to also mention this. If you plan to have a kick-ass computer when you upgrade, make sure you get plenty of RAM. That's very important even if you have a fast processor. I'd reccomend 256 megs or more. I've got 512 myself.

Hi I've got a

Nforce rig with a XP1600+ @ 1900+ i mean o/c a AMD is by far the best option i mean i got my chip at xmas it cos me 110 sterling pounds and im getting about 320 sterling pounds worth of power out of it. it 100% stable, and the NForce is a dream, 128Bit DDR controller and prefetch cache in built what more could you ask for really. i mean in future i'll be getting a a 2000XP and thats gonna be going at 2500+ when i get my hands on it

p.s. its adivsible to get a 2nd generation version (the green one), it's has a PR of 2300 PR=Pentium Rating with a 1600+ the 1st generation (the brown ones) only went to PR1600 with a 1600+

i highly recommend both Nforce by MSi and AMD XP chips 2nd generation

Skywalker out ... :duel:

I'm gonna add yet another vote for AMD. Don't feed the beast that is Intel and charges way to much for inferior goods! ;) AMD has came QUITE a long way, in my computer engineering class in high school we have K6-3 processors. What horrid creations those were, at least they were better than the K6-2's...I won't even go there. I'm just glad they did a full 180 and are now making the best chips. Also a note to add. Common knowledge will tell you that the faster a chip is in Mhz/Ghz the faster it is. Well common knowledge is wrong and AMD proved that. It's 2100XP chip runs at 1.733Ghz, and up against a P4 2.2Ghz, the AMD wins in just about every benchmark. So you might want to take that into consideration too when buying :)

I've used Intel procs for years until I switched to AMD last year and I love them! The P4's especially the new P4 2.0a and the 2.2a GHz are very nice but as far as MHz/GHz goes AMD wins hands down. To boot take a look at AMD new upcoming ClawHammer processor. It looks not only to pull ahead of Intel but smash it! It will be AMD's alternative to the Itanium, it's a 32-64 bit processor. Anyone will be able to own the new CH and it will run 64 and 32 bit apps. Intel's IA-64 (Itanium) will only be able to run 64 bit apps only!! There is a rumor that Intel has a plan b in which they are cloning a chip like the ClawHammer and then Intel would be playing major catch-up with AMD. What's even cooler is the fact that the CH is supposed to be around the same production costs as the Athlon XP is now! It's supposed to debut with a rating of about 3400+ (around 2.0 GHz) in the 4th quarter of this year.

Intel. They are back and everyone knows it, well ,except all of you of course.

The new P4 northwood 1.6A is an O/Cing feind. Lots of guys have these things upo to at least2.1 and some are even at 2.4. They will run at 133FSB with default voltage which means less heat. And AMDs from what I hear need lots of extra voltage to get them to O/C which means more heat which means bad things.

The 2.2 northwood are O/Cing to 2.8+ with no problem as well.

A 1.6A on neweeg is $133 and a 1.8A is $183

The XP1800 (1.53mhx) is $130 and a XP 1900 is $150.

So for $3 more you can have a P4 1.6A that will do easily 2.1 with nothing but a FSB bump in the menu yet your saying the AMDs are a lot cheaper? Go figure..
