GUNNER
I finally got all my hardware last week. I ordered my an 80G HD from Dell.. They had a sale, 20% off all periferals. Plus another $10 bucks off from some site called Slickdeals.net then it was also free shipping in April. So for $93.20 out the door I got an 80G, 7200rpm, UDMA, Western digital HDD. the only bad thing was the wife answered the door whn the UPS man came. For the past month or so I have been getting packages at least once a week.. She didn't see my 470W power supply come in though just 2 days before... Check this out. It's P4 certified. 470W, 3 fans, gold fan covers and connectors. Like the Enermax units but was only $75. I got it at Directron.com470W of hard core power So now I just need my new window kit which comes Friday and then it's time to start slapping it together. GUNNER
Ok, here is the list of junk I got.. black cheiftec case. (think Alienware) P4 1.6A , sweet O/Cing chips. should do 2100+ Asus P4S333 256M Mushkin DDR2700 Leadtek GF3 Ti200 Silver orb cooler for video card SB Audigy Gamer Sony 52X my 80G HD Intel 10/100 pro window kit with 120mm fan hole. 12 inch red cold cathode light 4 switch fanbus, .. Zargon
My system is confirmed and ready to be ordered when the deposits clear my checkign account: EPOX EP-8KHA+ RAID MB Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53 GHZ Thermaltake DRAGON ORB1+ Heatsink(38 cfm) Crucial 256 MB RAM STICK(another to be added later this summer) IBM Deskstar 120GXP 60 GB 7200 RPM HD CREATIVE SB LIVE! 5.1 MSI GF3 Ti 200 128 MB SONY 52X(have dvd already, cd goes to old cpu) Thermaltake 80 mm case fan(37 cfm) Linksys Etherfast 10/100 I hope to also, when I get more RAM, to get a new fan set-up for the side of the case. The Case is a Codegen SuperPower with a P4 approved(good enough I suppose) 350W Power Supply. I can't afford to run a 400+ when I will have 2 machine in my apt already, my power bill is too much already . My old machine is going to my desk at work, cause my work machine is major POS. My roommate for next year have a nice ALienware badass P4 machine with 150 GB of HD space, 512 mb ram, 64 mb GF3 and all the works, and I ge to keep her company all summer

Ikhnaton
dudes, why stop at 256 RAM?? if you're going to have a beefy machine, get 256 more! it is cheap!
Rogue15
ya, it is! I got 256 for only *digs under pile of junk for receipt* $36.38! It REALLY made a difference, even tho the computer guy who sold me it said my computer wouldn't use it (after i showed him a bunch of technical junk that he was supposed to understand hehe) but it made games like project igi, battle for naboo, xwa, and deus ex, and above run pretty decent. If i get a new motherboard or a geforce 2 (i only have a pci port, no agp. ) my computer will be able to run alot of games.

Rogue15
hehe i actually got ripped off b4....i bought 60 megs of ram for the old 486 (which my mom gave away the other day.... ) all of my money...WASTED!!!! like $80...that was b4 ram was cheap...and i didn't know exactly what ram did and thought it would take out the choppiness in my games, but it didn't, just made the load times faster, but it DID make the fps higher on this computer, which has an integrated intel 810e chipset, i don't know how i'm going to upgrade...it's a compaq too. OH NO MY COMPUTER'S TICKED AT ME NOW!!! *soothes computer by taking a dirty sock and wiping off the monitor*

Originally posted at http://www.shugashack.com/finger/?fid=johnc@idsoftware.com On the topic of current Nvidia cards: Do not buy a GeForce4-MX for Doom. Nvidia has really made a mess of the naming conventions here. I always thought it was bad enough that GF2 was just a speed bumped GF1, while GF3 had significant architectural improvements over GF2. I expected GF4 to be the speed bumped GF3, but calling the NV17 GF4-MX really sucks. GF4-MX will still run Doom properly, but it will be using the NV10 codepath with only two texture units and no vertex shaders. A GF3 or 8500 will be much better performers. The GF4-MX may still be the card of choice for many people depending on pricing, especially considering that many games won't use four textures and vertex programs, but damn, I wish they had named it something else.
