superthrawn
Ok guys, in the spirit of the "Pledge" thread, I've decided to open a new thread here. This will be an open debate on anything and everything you wish to talk about, as "Pledge" has basically turned into myself and Keyan talking about whether or not Catholocism is true, and a multitude talking about whether there is a God. So, fell free to rant and rave about whatever you feel like, but please have some facts to back your position up, it makes things so much more interesting. Keyan Farlander
First debate: Ordinary differential equations vs. Partial differential equations - which one is more kewl?
Taarkin
Partial! They sound easier. Unless that just mean they're incomplete and you have to complete them before you solve them.
Redwing
The opposite of whatever Keyan thinks!
Cmdr. Cracken
Both, because it's MATH, in the SUMMER.

Jabba The Hunt
the word differential used to give me nightmares i hate maths.
superthrawn
Is it just me, or does the word "ordinary" imply that there must be "unordinary?" ::Imagines a bunch of little abnormal differential equations running around, gets a headache and promptly falls asleep.::
Keyan Farlander
Sorry, ordinary and partial. I guess you could consider the partial ones "unordinary" if you want
superthrawn
Aw, Keyan, you ruin all my fun! Second question: Is there life more intelligent than the average denizen of this board on other planets?
edlib
Sure. That wouldn't be too hard, after all.
Admiral Odin
Great debate. Lets go back to math. Imaginary numbers. Since those numbers are imagined, then why is it wrong to imagine that what ever answer you put done is the correct answer to the problem?
Taarkin
Some people I know invented a new mathematical symbol combining <, >, and =. Their logic was every solution was <, >, or = 5.
Tierce
If I can't use my fingers to find the solution, then the math is not worth learning
Taarkin
In mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them. -Johann von Neumann

superthrawn
Ah, if only such a simple explanation would work for my math teachers, life would be much...simpler.
Admiral Odin
Math is simple. I loved my calc. class. We took about 3 test the entire year. Around christmas my teacher just stopped giving them to us. That was a fun class.
superthrawn
And people wonder why I complain about public schools. Heck, you should consider yourself lucky, my Calc course next year has to be dual enrollment, unless they can find someone in our school qualified to teach Calculus to thirty students. Mine is the first full class to be able to reach Calc without doubling up. (We had to skip sixth grade math... useless anyway.)

Tierce
no tests=no stress=more fun=more learning Unless the instructor is a bad teacher which then you will eliminate the learning part.
Keyan Farlander
No tests = no stress = nobody studies. You may think you are learning more, but believe me, you only master the details when you are forced to study for a tough exam.
