Qui-GONE Jinn
I'm planning on buying myself a new computer, since my old one is on the brink of destruction, so to speak. Anyway, I need a new computer, but i also need Deus Ex2 to work on it, and that game isn't out before 2003 at the earliest. So how many years do you think this configuration will live? AMD Athlon 2,133 ghz 512 MB DDR RAM 80GB Geforce4 Ti4600 128 MB Creative Soundblaster Audigy PCI with firewire umm..that's the most important details I think... I need advice, is this a good choice for a computer?
Sivy
with that spec, i would say at least 3 maybe 4 years before you may need to upgrade something and yes that is a good computer
TiE23
:xp:looks good, you know how old my computer is? first it was a crappy monitor with the switch on the back, and a computer that played DF. then a new montor about two years later, then updraded it to play DF2, and a printer, then got a new tower with Pentium II a few monther later, a new monitor, the one I have now, then got a compact and put a nice video card in, what i have now This was "Tie 23s Computer through the ages" brought to you by Chewie Chewbacca gum:D
Clem
as sivvy said it should last a while but the best way to go about it is to keep upgrading as u go ... ram ... graphics ... the CPU shouldnt need changing for a LONG time
Jah Warrior
teh only thing i would suggest would be to make sure the motherboard on this pc supports agp 8x i suspect this will be the new standard and will make future upgradabilty a breeze. also see if you can obtain a m/b with the via KT400 chipset as this will be more geared toward future products. Twins of Doom
just make sure that it is fuly upgradeable my first computer was an aptive c8x and i could only upgrade the ram from 32 mb to 64 mb, and that was it:rolleyes: so just make sure it is fully upgradeable (for example my current computer has enough room to upgrade the ram up to 1.5GB and a lot of room for hard drive...if i ever use up 60GB)
Kstar__2
looks like a good pc, i think it will last about 3 years:cool:

Qui-GONE Jinn
And by the way, Jah warrior, the motherboards is called something along these lines: MSI KT4 ULTRA m/b for Socket A KT400, ATA 133, ATX, USB2.0, AGP 8x.. Seems to meet your requirements?
Kstar__2
if it is a ATA133, i suggest you also buy an ATA133 harddisk, becouse than you'll have a faster h/d
Qui-GONE Jinn
Gee, quite complicated affair this! I'll try and check out your suggestion...

Qui-GONE Jinn
One more thing here people, is there significant difference in the performance of an Athlon 2.0 ghz and an Athlon 2.133 ghz processor? The price difference between them is kinda big, and I don't want to waste my money...
Darth Simpson
Nope, not much. I see there's about 1000 NOK between the two. I'd definitely go for the 2.0 GHz.
Qui-GONE Jinn
I thoughts so too...I'm down in 15835 NOK! That's acceptable..
Clem
<wonders what NOK is?> i havent noticed a change between My Athlon 1.4 (1400MHz) and my Athlon XP 1800+ (1533 MHz) r u sure its 2133Mhz? ... cos athlon Xp's arent numbered by their speed nemore
Qui-GONE Jinn
NOK is our Norwegian money currency. Means something like Norwegian Kroner, and 15835 NOK equals roughly 1583,5 $, if I'm not too dreadfully mistaken. You're right about the processors, the excact name is Athlon XP 2600, but it works at 2133 mhz, apparently...
Darth Simpson
Yeah, stupid name system. Building the PC yourself?
Qui-GONE Jinn
Nah, I'm having the guys at Komplett build it for me.. Man, I'm tired of my 450 mhz, banshee 16 mb and 128 mb ram-pc! I need a new computer! Desperately
Clem
its not a stupid system ... it compares them to their p4 equivalent a 1533 athlon xp will beat a 1800 p4
Darth Simpson
Hehehe, sounds like you are desperate! You'll finally be able to run some games again! I bought all the parts for my computer at Komplett. They're pretty cheap. I put it together myself though. I can't wait to play Deus Ex 2 either BTW. Looks like it's going to be great! Count Dooku 2
I could never understand all those statistics for a computer. I mean, what the hell is "MB DDR RAM" or "GHZ"? I've just got 'Windows 98' and something which lets me go on the Internet... is that good?
Qui-GONE Jinn
Well, as I'm not competent at puzzling computers together, I'll let them do the job ;o) Deus Ex 2... Ooh, that game is going to be the greatest ever! I still consider Deus Ex to be the deepest, funnest game I've ever played. I can't wait! Can't wait to play Hitman 2, either. I already own it, as I got it for my birthday (hey, what are birthdays for?) but this stupid system doesn't run it..=/
Qui-GONE Jinn
hehe, you need to give us more extensive information than that, if we are to judge your computer At least you have an avatar Wellwell, I'm off to bed guys.
