philosofic thread, part deux

well, my first philosofic tread wasn't such a big hit, so i'll just try it again.

i think:

that we are only really ourselfes on the internet.

let me explain myself:

there are certain things that you wan't to tell your friend, but you just can't. on the internet, no-one knows you, so it really doesn't matter what you say, because they won't take action, or confront you with it.

so, suppose i like this girl, and wan't to know some tips how to find out if she likes me (no, this is not why i posted this message!:p ) i won't ask my friends about it, because they may tell it to others, or go straight to that person. if i ask it here, i'll get a response, but it doesn't matter if you tell it furter, because you all don't know me personal.

so actualy, i think that the internet is alot safer when it comes to telling things, without being afraid of the consecuences (i know, i spelled it wrong)

I agree with you man. I tell my online friends more than I tell my friends where I live because my friends on the Internet are more seriouse and mature. You guy's know a lot to. On the Internet you don't have to be afraid of stuff you tell people because what are you going to do? E-mail it to people who know you. It's relatively safe and it is more comfortable.

It's because you need something controversial... not in a bad way, but you have to have something to create dialog. If you post something that everyone agrees with already, there's only so many times that people can read, "Yeah, I agree," (or one of the many variations) before they get bored. My advice is not to start yet another Philosophic thread, but to try and save this one by starting a new topic within it. Please though, nothing too serious. The Creation/Darwin thread got waaay out of hand.

Perhaps something like... are we alone in the universe? Let's hear arguments for and against. :) Maybe it'll take...

Everything is a state of mind.

There are no truths, only perceptions.

Nothing ends, nothing begins, everything is infinite.

I do not see you as how you are, but how you perceive yourself.

-Check my sig for some others.

EDIT - the evolution thread didn't get out of hand IMHO.

Whether we're alone in the universe is a scientific question, not a philosphical one.

If by technology you mean clothes and such, then yes - only people in a tropical climate can survive without clothes.

Technology - anything man made?

I disagree. It has philosophical implications because it refers to people's state of mind and how we think about ourselves with reference to the universe, which is something that Philosophy deals with. The Existential Vacuum, which is a big Philosophic debate, deals with whether or not we're alone as human beings. If you extend it to the universal scale, it becomes whether or not we're alone as a planet.

All I have to say was best said in the book (and movie) Contact: "If it really is just us... it seems to be an awful waste of space."

Good point.

However, that quote implies that a higher power created us IMO.

I like to think of it that it's reasonable to assume that life developed on other planets - since the universe is pretty big as far as we know... ;)

No, we're not alone in my opinion - wether the Bible tells people to treat aliens like animals is the more important question here.

Clothes do stuff too, such as protect you from the harsh elements.

We do not need computers or cell phones to survive, IMHO.

That wasn't the question I was trying to pose - nor was the quote meant to imply divine creation. I think, as you do, that it's not only reasonable to assume that life exists elsewhere in the universe, but to think anything else is downright selfish. Liken it to the old days when people thought the earth was the center of the solar system, with everything revolving around it. We have a hard time wrapping our minds around a concept like this: That we're not special - we're not the only ones here. I think the possibility that we're not alone in the universe also strengthens my position (one which does not involve divine creation) that the universe is random and that if there is a divine being, he has no direct impact on what we do here. However, I don't want to make this discussion about religion. I want to keep it scientific and philosophical. ;)

Okay then - how about this:

How should we treat aliens, if presumably they're as smart or smarter than us (IE: they find us)?

Should we treat them as animals? As other humans?

But if someone blew up all the power plants, chem plants, waste-processing plants, water treatment facilities, pipelines and factories, we in the Western World would effectively be dead. That is, of course, an acedemic point, as you would need some real mean nuclear bombs to do so. And if all the factories were to be nuked I don't think that we would care very much after the event.

I also agree that the "are we alone" question is really a scientific debate, as it concerns measureable indicators. We are alone in the universe. And when we meet a ET we will no longer be.

No computers do not control us, we where all born with one very important freedom - the freedom of choice, we may choose to depend on machinery, but we may also choose not to.

To get back to the original question, that we are really only ourselves on the internet, let me ask you this way:

Who am I? am I who I myself see me, or as my friends see me?

We should treat them as equals - definitely not as animals. Treat them the way you would treat an ambassador from another country, with dignity and respect.
