What was that green light for?

In Padme's apartment when the droid comes to send in the caterpillar things, the droid has a green light that comes out in a square. What was that for? It wasn't used to cut a hole in the window. Was it a light? Or maybe a security system deactivator?

Look how slightly clouded the view looks outside of the grean square. That what an energy shield looks like. Similar to how you saw the shield activate on Anis N-1 in Ep1.

if it was an energy shield then how did obi-wan jump though it? the droid had already moved away from the window by the time obi got there

Its theorized somewhere that human tissue can move through certain "force fields" while electronic/electrical machinery cannot due to their electric nature.

I figured that the thing the droid did or moved was simply some kind of star wars-like version of a field to protect Politicians from an energy blast.

I was at Barnes & Noble tonight, and I took a look at the Episode II script. Indeed, the script says that the green light is an indication that the droid was disactivating the security system. So I guess there's your answer :D
