Reverse racism?

I'm getting a little tired of this... reverse racism just frustrates me more and more lately.

Heres the background. I work at a community center in a nearby city, as an afterschool compute teacher. As it caters to a very urban area, the student population is almost exclusivley black, with a few hispanics and one single white girl. Now, the kids are cool (they havent developed the basic concept of race and racism yet, bless them), but the parents... the parents dont take me seriously at all! If a kid is having a hard time in somethig and I speak to the parent about it, they practically ignore me, and thats on a good day! One time one of them actually got aggressive at me...

Furthermore, many of the employees are black and I get similar treatment from them! When we have meetings and I speak up on something, I can see several of them sit back and look at the ceiling, or turn and talk to a friend, ignoring me. But when another black teacher says something, they listen (the other white teacher here encounters the same thing).

Normally, I'd say "screw you guys" and leave, but the community center had been looking for a computer teacher for 6 months and couldnt find one that had the patience (the others only lasted a week or two). I'd hate to have the kids gets screwed over and not have a computer teacher because of ignorant, stupid people...

The blatant, utter hypocrisy of it infuriates me, especially when they make me have the students do research on the civil rights movement and the anti-racism movement. It's all well and good (although I think they concentrate too exclusivley on it), but when they dont practice what they preach.... ARGH!

Has anyone here encountered "reverse racism"? Do you think it's a problem? Discuss.

Put this in the Senate forum!!! This is the perfect thread for that.

But maybe the black people havn't ever experience racism if they live in an all black area so they don't know what it feels like. I would not really know becasue I have never experience this before. But yes it does seem that whites can't say anything about any other race but they can to whites... weird

Great topic Shock. I'm not sure if this belongs in the serious discussion forum but that is not my decision. I'm not sure if my experience is what you are talking about in this thread but I will share it anyway.

When I was on my competitive basketball team, I was one of 3 white players on the team. The rest were black. Everyone seemed ok with this except for the parents of some of my black teammates. Every time a black person missed a shot or lost the ball, they said nice try, or you will get it next time. If I or one of my white teammates missed a shot or held onto the ball for more then 5 seconds they would yell "You have no place here, get off the court stupid white boy". I found this extremely offensive, to the point where I quit the team cause all I received were boos and wisecracks from them.

I agree something needs to be done about this. I am not racist, I have many black friends. But here is my honest opinion. If a white person says anything to a black person that is offensive, it is taken as a racist remark that will not be tolerated. If a black person makes fun of a white perosn it is taken as a joke.

This is just my complete honest opinion from what I have seen.:)

Like, my school is trying to ban Of Mice and Men because there is that stable guy every one in the book calls a niger.

That's stupid. And through the halls, there are groups of African Americans calling each other that. There are Mexicans I know that can call them that. They aren't really offended by it then, are they? Any African Americans reading this, are you offended at that word?

They get on everyone's case for being a racist if you say something wrong. The majority in my school are white, then mexican, than black. Are they using the fact they're a minority to say everyone's racist? This is the only topic that is serious that is worth talking in for me...

Black people use the n-word when talkin among themselves and the word for whites is "cracker." I think that the actual meaning has been lost and now blacks use it to refer to eachother as either a friend, "dude" or bad person. When another race uses it, it becomes derogatory. But educational books such as "Of Mice and Men" and Athol Fugard's Master Harold and the Boys expose us to what racism and Apartheid were really like in hopes to educate people about what is right and wrong. They should not be banned anywhere.

Your experience is exactly what I'm talking about! It didnt matter that you were on the same team as the black students and you were working together. The mere fact that you were white was enough for them to boo you. But you know as well as I do that if you were to say something like "stfu you dumb n***er," they'd act al wronged, as though they'd done nothing and you were an evil, racist, nazi kkk redneck. It's awful...

And Jais, your right, it is simple racism, flat out. I'd like to talk to them, but somethig in me feels like it wouldnt do any good...

It's sort of sad, really. It's gotten to the point where the only people I really feel comfortable with where I work are the one white teacher, the white director, and one black teacher. And whats worse, is I feel racist for not feeling comfortable around the black people that are there! It's like it's been drilled into me, and even though I know completely that I have every right to not feel comfortable, I still feel bad... and that aint fair.

If you get along with one of the black teachers, why not explain the problem to him? Or maybe team up with the other white teacher and make some ultimatums.

I know it's tough, but I wouldn't stand working with such arses. I'd either try to change them, and if that failed - so long suckers.

I suppose I might talk to the cool black teacher. He's a good guy. But I can only imagine what I'd have to listen to if myself and the other white teacher teamed up and made ultimatums.

I did a little research on the topic. I mostly found articles stating that reverse racism doesnt exist, or at very least is a tiny, tiny little problem thats not worth bothering with... Here, read this one...

http://www.black-collegian.com/african/archives/whitey1299.shtml

The author basically responds to David Horowitz claims about reverse-racism by calling him a racist himself! (gosh, where have I heard this before...) Then he goes on to claim that it doesnt exist by saying that other groups have done worse! Thats wrong on so many levels... Argh!

Lets see here. This kind of this pisses me off badly. Its kind of bad, now that black people can call us whites crackers and ****, but we cant call them nothing. And I fear, that if it were for people to be calling me racist comments like that, that I'd turn racist against them, which would b e really bad.

But Shock, If you are a minority, get the hell outta there. Its not worth it if they dont care about you. You could get beaten up because if you dont have to many friends there to help you out, you could get killed. I guess the right words to say are that those were my 2 cents.

Before I say what I have to say, I want you all to know that I am half black and half white. My dad is from Scotland and my mum is from Barbados.

Racism is racism whether it is against blacks, whites or any other colour and under no circumstances should it be allowed. You must first be certain it is racism, they simply might not like you, but if it is racism (and it sounds like it is) then something must be done. You must tell someone in authority how you feel and put a stop to it. Don't quit your job because of it, if you do then they have won. You must stand up for yourself, speak out when you notice something.

I hate the fact that black people go around calling each other nigger after all that our ancestors did to stop such words being used against us in a derogitory manner. Every time I hear the word it makes me want to scream. If someone called me a nigger, I would be extremely offended. Yes it is bad when a white person calls a black person a nigger because it is a racist term. If blacks want to call each other a name that stems from the slave trade, then more fool them, those that do it are ignorant, this does not give you the right to call them that name because it is still racist.

I think it all stems from what black people went through. Making a joke of the word is sort of a defence so that the word hasn't got as much of a hateful meaning as it did.

I have only ever encountered mild racism in my life, more stereotyping than anything else. I didn't stand for it and neither should anyone else who encounters it, no matter what colour you are.

Unfortunately there are a lot of narrow minded ignorant fools in this world, it is up to us to teach our children that there is only one race, the human race.

edit/ And there is no such thing as reverse racism. That term implies that racism only goes one way, against blacks. It goes all ways, racism is racism.

Some black people act like complete fools and are racist, and those are the people I hate. That does not make me racist thoguh. I have black friends that unlike the former group, are really nice people. The fact that you hate that first group for who they are then in turn causes them to call me racist. They're real jerks that are racist, not me. They just really piss me off.

Some black people think that since their ancestors were persecuted by white people that means they can do the same to white people now. Wtf is with their demented minds? "My great grandpa was hurt by your great grandpa so I can hurt you!" Look whos the racist now! That makes them no better than the racist whites 200 years ago.

Btw Im thinking that its kinda stupid to call people black and white. That is kinda racist to me. And its also incorrect. Theyre Africans and Europeans. We call people from Asian decent Asians, and Latin people are Latinos, Indians are Indians, Americans are Americans. Wtf is white and black? Im not white Im Eurpean and I live in the US.
