I know I’m tired of being harassed to buy porn or weight reducing pills. I'm 5'8 & 160Lbs for peet sake. If I want that crap it’s not hard to fine on here. Hell I get spammed talking to people on ICQ and it really gets on my nerves. I think this should be a Federal Law not just a state law for Virginia. Why should they get all the luck? Should you ban ads and commercials by radio, mail, and TV, too:D? Just hit the delete button on your inbox guys. Look, I hate email advertisements too, but I think jail is too strict, unless it's something you can't block (continuerly changing subject header, etc.), like in the article. People don't stop watching TV or listening to the radio, because of advertisements, but they do stop using the net. There is a big deference between a Pepsi commercial on TV and the pop up selling porn and blow up dolls. It's offensive to most people. There is lots of advertising on the net that is tolerable such as banners and the like. Besides a law on junk e-mail there should be a law against junk mail and telemarketers. But I suspect that most will simply switch to off-shore, out of country servers to defy regulations of individual states. Still, it will definately begin cleanup of a dirty business. One thing about spam to consider, however: if somebody wasn't spending money based on their ads, they wouldn't do it. So whoever you are, STOP! Not very funny then, is it. It's illegal too. What often happens when you click the "I don't want any more of your junk ads"-button, is that they just send you more instead. As you've now shown yourself as an active user of that particular email adress, they'll begin an even bigger bombardment. Absolutely disgusting. In the real world, you can say now to ads and commercials simply by placing a sticker on your mail box. Online however, there's no way to stop it. Ideally, you should be able to click a similar button on your email account - "No spam mails", and then you're spam free. I'm glad these b*tches get what they deserve. Now, granted, YES. These guys are jerks. It's a pain to have to wait for NET SEND to turn off every time I reboot so I don't get those annoying pop up messages. (Ironically, now they have 'Pop Up Stopper' ads in the pop ups...). But come on, it's almost like sending telemarketers to jail. Yes, they're incredibly annoying, but should we ship them off to jail? By doing that you also leave them with all the crap they gained from the Spamming and they will get out and do it again mush like a drug pusher. There going to RAPE them like a MOFIA bust. They are going to take all their crap. So after all is said an done they will be out on the street giving $5 hand jobs to get by. They might go back to there spamming ways, but not after they have to get all the money to get the computers and crap they need. Carry a sign around town that reads, "I'm a spammer?" That probably would eliminate spammers through "natural selection." Spammers with signs wouldn't live long (fed up/angry citizens stoning them an all) and therefore this mutation of society would die off rather than reproduce At least with telemarketers, one has the ability to interact in ways that annoy them back (assuming it's not a recording). I can't tell you how many long-distance service providers I've argued that I don't actually have a telephone, but rather a can on a string. (One would think that it's the quality of the can that is important here, but actually having a very good string gives the best audio quality). True enough, spamming is the cheapest form of advertisment since it is very much like direct mail, but you only really have to mail one copy and have it go to many receipients. No printing costs, postage, envelope costs... etc. You don't even have to pay wages to the computer that spends all night "wardialing" multiple email addresses. Take their computers / internet access away! That definately will deter them! Jail might be better (at least they have internet ). I think the real answer, however, will be some form of citizen activism. Although it'll increase overall bandwidth use, bouncing messages back the way some spam filters can might be the answer, but only if MOST internet users do it. AOL is screwed, though, in my opinion. I still laugh when I think about that American cleptomaniac who got sentenced to 9 months without TV. Under pressure, the judge eventually gave him a milder punishment which he was grateful for: Jailtime.:DLMAO! Back on topic, though: I stilll stand on my point that jailtime is overkill. They don't invade your private mailbox either. But no, they don't deserve jail. A fine to compensate for all the time I've spent on deleting their junk, and salvaging important mails will do nicely. If they were going to be executed then I would understand the arguments. It's just a little jail time for something that is illegal and that has gone long to long untouched. People can do a lot of constructive things in jail besides getting rammed by Big Bubba. One of the things they can do there "think of something else to do other than harass people and costing corporations money." A lot of people won't use the net, because of SPAM and pop ups. The problem is even popping up and cell phones now except for that the user gets charged for the message they get. So now it will cost the cell phone user money to get junk mail.
