JediMasterEd
Just recently, I've been recieving pornography advertisements in the form of an IM and it's really ticking me off. I've had about eight of them so far within a three day period. Is there anyway of stoping this other that removing it or just blocking it?
Billy Shears
I used to have that same exact problem. It was extremely annoying, especially when I was in the middle of a game, and the thing pops up and prevents me from killing a Reborn....grumble..... The actual program it uses is not MSN Instant Messenger, but some kind of messenging system where the admin can send messeges to the rest of the users on the PC....or something like that. Anyway, what you have to do is navigate to Administrative Tools | Services in the control panel, double-click on Messenger and click on Stop. Then set the Startup Type to Manual or Disable. Click on OK and the pop-up spam will be blocked.
Zygomaticus
This only happens when I use ICQ... Can't say it happened with MSN, but then again, I haven't been online very much, lately.
darthfergie
yeah same here krk... although I have had it happen to me on MSN IM...but only once. and considering that I'm on MSN IM alot I think it's pretty safe. BTW, why do you leave MSN IM on when you are playing a game? Tis crazy...I'd rather devote those resources to my game rather than suffer a potential crash of the game or frag out. That's why I just exit MSN IM when I'm playin most games...just personal preference I guess...but still...
JediMasterEd
Nope, doesn't work. Just got two today. Is it possable that MSN is trying to get people to get MSN 8? They'd take off the protection software and say MSN 8 is better with more protection. Grrr..another one! I usually leave MSN Messenger on when I'm playing a game and it really doesn't slow down the game. I think I have the program allowed to run in the background or something like it. Billy Shears
Like I said, it's not the MSN Instant Messenging program that makes the popups, it's some other program for the Admin of the computer. Ed, are you sure you had the Startup type on Disable?

another_trooper
Popups are everywhere, you cant stop them, theyll just come back in another form. . . The only time i was really rid of popups was the 15 day period when i had STOPZILLA installed, unfortunatly it was only the trial
Zygomaticus
If you use Opera* and use the option, "Only display asked for popups" you don't get any unsolicited popups! And it's awesome! *Opera browser: http://www.opera.com

JediMasterEd
I had it on manual. Unless it needed to be on disable?
edlib
To shut off popup ads that occur on your Win XP comp when NOT surfing the net: Go to the control panel and click on Administrative Tools, and then click on Services. Find the ones marked "Messenger" and "Alerter" and click on them. Click the "Stop" button. When you see the box labeled "Startup Type" change it to "Disabled." JediMasterEd
Ok...back up...they are coming in forms of IM's...the thing that says so-and-so says: Blah blah blah? Well...not exactly like that...
edlib
OK then... just ditch MSN Messenger. If you don't have an account, you'll never miss it. It's a major resource hog, and an open door to your PC. And if you DO have an MSN account you can't live without,.. well, I've heard good things about Trillian.
Redwing
JME: If this was an AIM problem, I'd tell you to take yourself off the Member Directory. Dunno if there's an equivalent for that with MSN...
Darth Groovy
Actually I had that problem only the first time I signed up for ICQ. In fact, about less than a minute after I first signed on, it was a porn IM. So, needless to say I was immediately turned off by ICQ, plus I hate guessing who is who, by some long ass number. These days, I use Trillian, which connects me to most all of the big messangers services out there, and I get no problems with IMs.
