Chewbacco
On June 6, 1944, the invasion of Alied forces made up of the U.S, British, and some French invaded the beaches of Omaha in northern france above Normady. Thousands have lost their lives in this short heavy fire invasion. Have you seen the movie,Saving Private Ryan ? Well the move starts on D-Day and ends in an abandoned city in the middle of Normandy. Rated R. It is very bloody and gory. In D-day people arms an legs were blown off and people halves were blown off. Heads exploding by .50 calibers. It was just sick. But realistic. That is Steven Spillburg all right.
TheJackal
The Canadians invaded Juno beach on DDay. Today the Juno Memorial has opened on Juno Beach in France. And be mature about this day please. dont say: "WE KICKED GERMAN ASS". There are times to joke around and others where its not polite.
Antilles_CL
I actaully hap the privelage last year to visit Omaha and Utah beach as well as Pointe Du Hoc.
Chewbacco
I think that the bloodiest and biggest one was Omaha Beach.
Antilles_CL
Indeed it was... We wouldn't have won it if it hadn't been for a weather storm...Which put most of the Higgins boats off course and sent theme farther down the shore (which was less guarded by the Germans)
Chewbacco
Why don't planes bomb the bunker on Omaha Beach and then send troops on land to capture the survivors? I don't get that. Instead they go on a full fledged invasion starting with a high death toll mission.
Antilles_CL
Well they sent Paratroopers in the night b4, to try and take some territory, the planes couldn't come in until the navy had ships to hold them. Which wasn't until the morning of the 6th.

I don't condone war at all but I do admit that sometimes it's necessary. Fortunately, most people in the thread seem to share this view and I dont' think Thrackan meant any malice by it. Let's just remember the good that's come of this day. [/lecture] Big Peace, B.

The Army Air Corp bombed the shores of France for a while but you have to remember that the bombs were not that very accurate. Even though we did cause damage many places were untouched. The Germans were in heavy fortifications that were hard to destroy and pinpoint from a B-17. Our anphibious landing were neccesary because we had to make sure that the germans weren't there. Had we just sent in Paratroopers they would of been in the middle of the meatgrinder with Germans on all sides. We had to clear every area and make sure that we would not be taken out from the rear. We also had to get tanks in so we had to have landed from somewhere with a beach and access to the French countryside. You also have to remember like Jackal said that this was not just a American operation. There were Canadians and British that also were on the beaches but the American beachhead like Omaha, and Utah were the biggest ones and bloodiest. Also Thrackan Solo we were already defeating the Germans in North Africa and in Italy. It shouldn't be a day were we should yell out Woo-Whooo. Many people died to take those beaches and we should pay respect to them. Take a moment of silence for those that have up their lives to defeat the Germans. boinga1
Just thoguht I'd add that the victory was helped by the fact that the German General (Rommel) had gone home for his wife's birthday, or to give her a pair of shoes, or ...something like that. He became a double agent for the Allies. Feading false information to the Axis. One of the false documents was that the invasion was to take farther up the cost. Hitler believed so much into this spy that a lot of forces were diverted to that part of France. anyways. this just proves i watch too much History Television

Does no those deserve the same respect as those who fought for the Allies? On both sides we have young men who faces death and destruction to fight for what they believe for. And I might add that it was the Allies who attacked that day, not Germany. I believe the soilders on both sides deserve the same amount of respect. Chewbacco
Know why they choose June 6th, 1944? Because at that time of month it was at low tide. So that boats wouldn't get damaged from the beach obstacles. The army had a choice of a date June 5th or june 6th at first. D-day was also called operation, Overlord. It started on June 5th at 10:11 pm. Several planes took off full of pathfinders. Their job was to plant becons to guide the planes full of paratroopers to their drop zones. When the pathfinders landed on the ground. They were all scattered. Which was lucky because later when the paratroopers landed they were scattered. Which confused the enemy. If the pathfinders were not scattered, many people could've died and they would fail their mission to assult the artillery base. which would cause many British troops to die. Ratmjedi
They also chose it because there was no moon that night so the German's had a very hard time spotting them. I watched a cool special on the History Channel yesterday about D-Day about the Pathfinders, Navy UDT, and the British Paratroopers.
