Press Release:

ADV Films President and CEO John Ledford yesterday publicly confirmed industry rumors that the firm has acquired the rights to produce, and has already begun development of, a live-action feature-film based on the Japanese animated television series Neon Genesis Evangelion, a multi-million dollar worldwide franchise and perhaps the most influential anime title in the history of the art form. The project is a collaboration between ADV Films, Gainax and Weta Workshop, Ltd. ADV Films is the leading producer-distributor of Japanese animation in North America. The Japanese anime and game studio Gainax Network Systems was one of the original production studios responsible for Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Weta Workshop, Ltd. is the New Zealand-based special effects studio that created the effects for Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "The three main players here represent something of a 'dream-team' for a project like this one," said Ledford. "Between the quality and significance of the Gainax title, Weta's industry-leading skill in the creation of special visual effects, and our expertise in the marketing and promotion of anime and anime-related content, this project is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." Neon Genesis Evangelion is the story of a reluctant young hero, called upon to pilot an immense robotic weapon in battle against alien invaders. Including both a 26-episode television series and at least two animated motion pictures, Neon Genesis Evangelion has long been both a fan favorite and an extraordinary critical and commercial success, with the worldwide franchise producing many millions of dollars in revenue. The live-action motion picture is in the earliest stages of development. Ledford confirmed, however, that the timetable is an aggressive one, and that more information on the project is forthcoming.-comingsoon.net

hmmm... i was thinking this would rock as a live action film... but it has a large danger of sucking too...

The other two are cool, but i don't know much about ADV films... this sort of thing would need a big budget... and a pretty long movie to do it justice. Hope it doesn't end up like those crappy Crying freeman, guyver, fist of the north star live action films...

Ordered End of Eva last week... hopefully arriving in the next day or two :D :D :D

I agree with toms, not much of a precedent to go on. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Sorry about gatecrashing your forum and bumping an old thread. Blame Darth Eggplant, he linked me to it. Just felt the need to add my piece.

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago while in California... And I'm not at all keen on the idea, to be honest.

There's no way in hell that you can convey all the deep weirdness that is NGE in one film, and anime to live-action just... doesn't sit well with me.

I might keep an eye on it, but I get the feeling it'll be a completely different beast to the anime, all things considered - I expect it to be utterly horrid, and if it's not, I'll be pleased :)

I dunno, it has potential to be decent. I mean, Weta's working on it....look what they did with LotR...

Of course, that doesnt mean it'll be any good. I agree with wacky in that it will be awfully difficult to portray the odd abtraction of NGE.

I guess it really depends on the cast and the director. If they had an actual fan of anime direct it then it could be really great. It doesn't matter how good the CG is, if the acting and story sucks, the movie sucks.
