I've always had a small admiration for hackers, probably from watchin war games as a kid. Hacking the pentagon and the FBI is cool and all, but now they have gone too far and p*****d me off!

Realistically, they have to re-write a lot of the Source engine, otherwise they will never be able to sell it if developers don't think it will be secure.

The Vivendi guy was on CNN as well, wasn't he? Unfortunately, whenever there are 2 dates floating around for a computer game it is ALWAYS the second one that turns out to be true, if not one later than that. Im not getting my hopes up for a release this year. :(

Let me get this right, its cool to hack the pentagon and the FBI, but when you "cross the line" and hack a game, them it turns bad? :eyeraise:

Yes, it certainly seems that not only did the hackers make off with enough of the assets to put something together...they also obtained a beta version of the game.

Things are just going from bad to worse for Valve. As I said before, this has seriously damaged their reputation. Who is going to trust them in future with their own assets, like the physics engine stuff?

Personally, I really don't want to see the game released now, until they can go back into the guts of the engine and ensure there is no potential for security hacks. The last thing I want is giving someone a backdoor to my PC via playing a game. So I hope it is delayed until April 2004 - at least that gives them more of a chance to revise code.

If they release it in a month, I will definitely not purchase it. I would leave it a few months to see if anyone's PC got hacked... I'm sure other gamers will be feeling the same way. I think it's in Valve's best interests to delay the release.

I don't know what the security fuzz is about  People are scared now, because they will make cheats etc etc... Betas were leaked for other games too you know, but I didn't hear anyone complain then

Even Jedi Academy had a leaked beta, you did buy THAT game didn't you?!?!

So I think they should target a december release, that is if the game is almost finished and just needs some polishing. From what I know of hl2 sites, some hackers said publicly that the game is like 80% done; in that case HL2 should take more time.

The ANON leaker/hacker (anonymous), has said in an undisclosed IRC channel and room that he will be releasing the Pre-Gold version of Valve's Half-Life 2 tomorrow with the 100% SourceCode. When asked why he will be releasing it so soon after the Beta he said "I suggested Valve to stop lying to their customers about how much was stolen. However, they disregarded my statement and called me a liar.

But also (according to a Valve employee):

There's no doubt that the E3 content has leaked out. But... well, let me just repaste my post from the SteamPowered forums:

The anonymous hacker thief writeth once...

To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to understand it wasnt finished yet.

And also...

Now they will see how much I have been lying when I release the Pre-Gold and all 100% of the sourcecode. Actions speak louder then words.

Logic is a real conundrum sometimes, huh?

Feel free to believe whoever you like. At this point... whatever.

Well... There IS a beta of HL2 (while Valve said earlier there wasn't a beta!!) and now ANON says they will release a pre-gold complete version of the game soon... That isn't just 1/3 of the sourcecode ;)

But Rhett, I see what you mean, the source code should remain secret, but hey, Valve has lots of experience now with anti-cheat protection...
