Amidala from Chop Shop
Not only is killtracker spam useless information and annoying, but according to this article http://www.ukgamer.com/columns.php4?author=53&startat=10&perpage=10 chat spamming (which would include killtracker spam) adversely affects server performance. When referring to sv_maxrate (typically set between 4000 and 10000): (Those numbers don't include the cost of chat, which is EXTREMELY high. A single player chatspamming can spike it up to 20K). It refers to Quake III, but as you know JA is based upon the Q3 engine. Off topic, the discussion of sv_fps in the same article is interesting. The default value of sv_fps for Jedi Academy is 20, and that may be causing some of the hit-detection problems mentioned in other threads. I have increased my server's sv_fps to 25. Kurgan
Your server is 5x saber damage? No wonder I was so awesome with the saber the other night! ; ) Anyway Amidala, if you find that the sv_fps thing helps you, I'd like to know what a good number to change it to is (from default). I don't need anymore lag on my server, but if I could be getting better hit detection for all people on my server all this time, I'd like to know! Does it really work, or is it not worth it? KaiaSowapit
I've tried adjusting sv_fps to 60 (too much packet loss), 40 & 25. To be honest, I've yet to notice a world of difference - then again I never really noticed much of a problem to begin with. This is just my personal opinion, and take it for what it's worth seeing as I'm no genius coder/networking specialist, but it seems to me that getting the best results in-game are as much dependent on your video/cpu hardware as is your online connection. I suspect most people complaining about "buggy" hit-detection are lacking in one of those areas (or their opponents/server host is). Just my two cents. BTW, back on topic... Kill Trackers blow. Thank you!
psycore
Killtracker? should i lol or cry? Master William
Just what I expected. A big stupid flame from all the fun-haters in this 'forum'. Kill Tracker is very fun, altough it really can get annoying at times. IMO, I'm ok as long as it doesn't say 'Hey, Nexus, I owned your little n00b ass (like everyone else) for the 912581295th time!' That is annoying, but normal messages don't bug me.

KaiaSowapit
Master William, you're on record for defending "Honor Codes" on other threads (presumably out of consideration for those that like them), yet you accuse those of us opposed to kill trackers (something you yourself admit to being "annoying at times") as "fun-haters?" Do you fail to see the hypocrisy in that? What's so noble about knowingly annoying other guests, especially if it's potentially introducing lag? If that's honestly your idea of "fun" please do us both a favor and stay off my server.
Prime
Originally posted by Amidala from Chop Shop So killtracker fans, if |GG|Carl, Stormhammer, Kurgan, Amidala, KaiaSowapit, and Jawa 8578, people who could disagree with each other over whether rocks are hard, water is wet, and babies' bottoms are smooth unanimously agree that killtrackers are horrible and for n00bs only, doesn't that tell you something? I'll add my name to the list, for all the reasons mentioned. Having all that coloured text spamming my screen is annoying, at the very least. Sorry to agree with you Jawa8578. I guess this means the Apocalypse is at hand... Originally posted by t3rr0r if someone wants to have fun with text, play a mud. Or crayons. Master William
Having fun with text? Do you think I play this game with text? I don't even use a kill tracker, I simply don't find as annoying as other people do. Different opinions, we have, yes. And Kaia, I never visited your server, and never intended to. I in fact won't either I rarely play JA nowadays for some reason, but the most entertaining thing is kicking with the Staff, it works wonderfully with the 1.1 patch. Sorry if my opinion sometimes sounds way too harsh like ''F U ALL! I LIKE KILL TRACKER! SHUT UP!''. Sorry, but I tend to get angry at many posts in this forum, and this is just a rare case where I actually decide to post instead of staying angry. I don't want to be flamed, but this seems to happen sometimes... It didn't happen yet, though.
Amidala from Chop Shop
Here is a great tip for all killtracker despisers: If you are playing a game and some inconsiderate person continues to use a killtracker despite server rules, MOTDs, automated messages, and multiple polite and not-so-polite requests to turn it off, just change your name to the killtracker-spammer's name (I think it must be exactly the same including colors, symbols, etc.) and type !ktoff or !silent in chat. It will turn off the other person's killtracker! It works in JK2 and I assume it will work in JA as well:amidala: Originally posted by Kurgan Your server is 5x saber damage? I don't need anymore lag on my server, but if I could be getting better hit detection for all people on my server all this time, I'd like to know! Does it really work, or is it not worth it? Kurgan, there is another thread on sv_fps here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=114308&highlight=svfps Values must go evenly into 1000 (milliseconds) so choose between 20 (default), 25, 40, and 50. I am using 25 for my Jedi Academy servers (due to host restrictions) and 40 on my Jedi Outcast servers. Modest increases may not only improve hit detection but also reduce lag. UPDATE: in order for clients to take advantage of increased sv_fps, their snaps must be equal to or greater than the server's sv_fps. Since there is no harm in a client setting a high level (it's a maximum rate), clients should /set snaps 40 or higher. Perhaps the reason KaiaSowapit didn't see any difference is because the default snaps is 20 (I think). Raising sv_fps above 20 with client snaps set to 20 would have no effect. Master William
See, that's how it goes when you express your true opinions on this forum. Chuahtemoc
I just spent half an hour of my precious time reading this retarded thread about how people enjoy spamming because they suck at the game... Grrrrrr! I'm gonna go dark side in JA now! > lol:bdroid2:
Kurgan
Well, we can all agree to disagree. The fact is, killtrackers have a vast potential for abuse (sort of like admin mods) and have the potential to cause problems (such as lag), and for that it's perfectly reasonable for people to dislike them. Plus they can be used in an inappropriate context (such as a gametype that isn't about individual kill points). Master William has a right to his opinion and doesn't deserve to be flamed just because he's "wrong" or his opinion is unpopular. Anyway, that's really cool Amidala, I'll be sure to try that next time I see a KT spammer! ; )

Dr_night
Now, listen the best player in the world can get a killtracker and use it, but he may not, the worst player in the world may or may not, some people may hate the spam BUT USING A KILL TRACKER DOES NOT MAKE SOMEONEA NOOB!!! 1)some people use killtrackers because they have low esteem 2) some people use killtrackers because they love to spam people 3) some people use killtrackers as proof to their friends (even though the cfg CAN be modified) 4) anyone who says killtrackers are for Newbies have no idea what they are talking about there. that said does anyone understand the fact yet, or do I need to scream some more? EDIT: for those people who have pmed me about similar topics sasying i was wrong, let me try to say it again on this one: Killtrackers CAN be abused, but USING a killtracker doesn't mean the person is or isn't a newbie/lamer/whateverthe**** you call people you are angry at. FK | unnamed
As much as I dislike kill trackers I have to admit that one that has the message "HAHAH you ****head I kicked you" as the default message when you finish a guy with a kick made me laugh pretty hard the first time I saw it in action.
