Its kind of sad actually, Garfield used to be one of the funniest comic strips, but lately its been getting a little lame. I dont know, maybe its because I've grown out of it or something, but I don't think it deserves the front page on the comics section anymore.

I seriously think Jim Davis needs to take a sabbatical. He's been creating Garfield comics for over twenty-five years nonstop, for pete's sake! (not to mention his animating ventures) I think that if he just takes a break for a few months and has some of his old (and usually funnier) strips up during his absence, he might have more time to think of some genuine knee-slappers and keep Garfield funny.

Of course, at least you guys still get Garfield. My stupid a** local newspaper dropped it in favor of cheaper comics that are not as funny.

As a whole, though, comics have gotten bland. (American comics, that is. I don't know about overseas ones) Cartoonists anymore are going for "cute" rather than "funny." The only comics I'll laugh out loud at anymore is Dilbert and Zits, and occasionally Luann. As far as the rest of them are concerned, they always seem to disappoint. And don't even get me started on The Family Circus. Even I could think of funnier things than the stupid "kiddie-isms" that tend to dominate the strip. I also think cartoonists should put a little more effort into drawing their strips. In comparison with such old classics as Pogo and Thimble Theatre, comic strips today are very crudely drawn, relying on words alone to carry the humor rather than a good word and picture gag combo.

I think cartoonists need to re-evaluate what makes a cartoon "funny." Stop with the cutesy-smarmy-"Kids say the Darndest things" route and bad plays on words and go for how the comics used to be: well drawn strips with funny imagery with a healthy dose of irony, zany expressions and overall ridiculousness.

You can read the classic ones on garfield.com

I used to get the newspaper every morning and look at the garfield comics. I would also go to the liberry and would take out those yearly books with all of Garfields comics in one year in it. Now I gave up on Jim Davis sad to say. Odie-the lovable dog-took a real long absence in the Garfield comics. Maybe Jim Davis forgot about Odie. I used to love it when Garfield would kick Odie off the table. :p

And what about Nermal (sp?)? The lovable cousin or something of Garfield that would come by and just get sent to antarctica by Garfield. Good times.....

I really like Fox Trot though.

Norwegian comics have actually grown a LOT the last 2 years... like 3 years ago we only had Garfield, Hagar The Horrible, and Andy Cap... Now we have like 3-4 norrwegian comics that have gotten really huge here. :D And they're all so much better than the american ones (no offence)

The far side is still fun, but sadly many norwegian translators just take all the points out of the cartoons

Ah, the wonders of dubbing and translations :p

Pondus

I bet u didnt get much out of that! Hah! :p
