Warhammer 40,000

Anyone who is on these forums play it?

If so, can any of you give me some advice on what to do first and how often and just how I should go about spending what limited money I have on these miniatures? Any advice would be most appreciated.

I've been thinking about going Tau or Imperial Guard and just buying one 15 dollar set just to try this hobby out.

Anyway, thanks in advance, legameboy.

Well, I went to a Games Workshop store that's near me and the guy there was really helpful and informative about everything. He said my best bet was to get the 75 dollar starter box, and he showed me how to play and played a short game of it with me. It was really fun, but I want to make sure I don't flush 75 bucks down the drain when a month later I just abandon it.

Tell me, is the starter set the way to go, and is Warhammer 40k one of those hobbies you really stick to?

I found it fun, but I believe you all who play Warhammer 40k can help me make my final decision.

Starter set= evil. You only get 10 space marines with a vehicles, with 20 dark eldar. So unless you have a friend to split it with, it's not that good of a deal.

You can buy the book for 30 dollars, and spend the extra 40 on 20-30 Imperial guard.

And as for game..yeah it's fun. You need to be patient, though. Large battles involving a few of your friends can take a whole afternoon.

ive play load of GW system since i was ........4! and still do, great fun indeed :D

A good way to start would be, as tyrion said, to buy the book to start with. Mabey go in, ask one of the staff for some advice, try finding one who plays the army you want to try, talk bout the army. The rules book has sample armies for most races (not tau though, as they where created later :D). have a look throuhgh the book at the armies look at the different models. If you can try and pick some 2nd hand models of the armys you want, 2 or 3, to try out painting on, cause if you hate painting the models in an army then the army is not gonna be fun ;). then buy the army book for the race you want and a look at that, and buy a sutable HQ and one basic troop. Then expand that. I good way to play when you start off is 40k in 40 miniutes. Needs less models takes less time and is good to learn to play. If you want, pm me and i'll try to find the rules for 40k in 40 mins in a WD, scan them and send them for you via e-mail.

This post was brought to you by Wilson, a true workshop freak :D

Ps: if the cost of the models is a bit pricy, try to find a indepent stockest shop or buy stuff from well known online shops. They normly sell at 15% off.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to remember it. The Warhammer 40k in 40 minutes rules I have already found, and it's good. The next time I go to the Games Workshop store (does that place charge normal or discount?) I'm going to watch a match (I'm going when the store has an official WH40K match), and compare and add up prices and junk. The thing that I liked about the starter set is that it had almost everything I need at first at a... fair price? The only thing I didn't like is it didn't have either one of the races that I wanted to make an army of. (I'm going for Tau, I'm almost certain.)

So thank you all again, and I'll give you an update of things later on. I wouldn't mind if you all kept giving me more advice either. XP

EDIT: Well guys, I looked at the prices of different things so I can start my Tau army and... yikes. I want a small, well balanced 2-3 squad army, and I don't know what to do. Any help would be nice right now. Please show me what set(s) and book(s) and any other accessories I should get and stuff that would add up to 75 US dollars. It seems I can't start playing WH40K without spending at least 100 dollars! (Not counting the starter set) :(

It's an expensive hobby. And really, half the fun is painting the minatures.

Anyway, the Games Workshop stores sell them overprice. You'd have a much easier time buying them at unofficial retail stores(unless they dont sell to them anymore..a while ago they stopped selling to online retailers).

All you need to be able to play a match is to have two infantry squads and 1 HQ unit. By the way, it's also a good idea to buy the Tau Codex. It's an extra 20 dollars, but it has detailed information on all of the Tau units.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to painting the miniatures! :D

Two infantry squads would be what? One 30 dollar Fire warrior set? Or two? I'll get a cheap HQ unit too, just because you said so. :p I'll have to read the rules before I understand why I need them. ;)

Anyways, the only problem I have with focusing on one army (intead of going with the set) is that I can't play a game against a friend that comes over, or my dad or brother.

I would have to stick to going to the hobby shop once a week and occasionally having my friend (who is getting back into WH40K in about 2 weeks) over to play. Of course, if I work on terrain and stuff, work a bit harder so I can earn more money, and spend more time painting (by the way, the painting seems really hard!), I guess that would be ok.

Just keep sending help. :D

PS: (What is your AIM, YIM, or MSN (preferably MSN) address so we could chat (I'm asking you, Tyrion, and Captian Wilson))

Also, borrow one of your mums/moms bedsheets and wear it as a cape, wear an ice cream container as a helmet, and call yourself "The Dark Knight"....thats what I used to do :p

Please refer to "Comic Store Guy" from the Simpsons for further inspiration :

To sit next on this seat you must answer these riddles 3

Gotta admit though, one thing that is amazing is the artwork in mags like White Dwarf.....

I think the 40,000 refers to the time period it is set in...the 40th millenia, im sure someone will know for sure.... as if kids in 398,000 years time will be playing with miniature figurines, HA ! :p

Out of interest, there has been a game released recently on consoles and pc set in the WH 40,000 era, called 'Fire Warrior' IIRC, it is essentially a first person shooter, though I havent played it as fps games irk me remarkably...

Its warfare in year 40k, yes...

I think its set to after the world has been pretty much destroyed by war.

'In the fortieth millenia there is only war.'

I got my first Warhammer 40k set Thursday! It was a basic Tau Fire Warrior team set with 12 Firewarriors and 2 Gundrones. I put together the whole set in about 5 hours. It was suprisingly more fun than I thought it would be. I'm going to a painting workshop for WH40k in about 30 minutes. This Warhammer stuff is really fun, and I haven't even played a game yet! Hopefully I'll go ahead and buy a modeling knife, the Tau Codex, another Tau Firewarrior team set, and a Tau Etheral. That should cost me around 50 dollars, because me mum says if I'm real serious about this, she'll buy all the books I need. So far, she's really impressed. Anyways, this is awesome! :D

Good for you :D

You're lucky to get someone to pay for it, cuz the financial part have been my biggest problem :(

A hint; Paint the pieces before you assemble them, that will make it easier toget colour in the creases ;)

Also, ALWAYS undercoat your models :)

My mom isn't paying for this hobby, she might buy a codex or two for me though. :)

I don't need to and I don't paint the pieces before i assemble them, not with the scheme I have. I prime the model, highlight it with some Codex Grey, coat it with a thin, inky layer of Chaos Black, brush it lightly around the top with some Fortress Grey, then do the symbols and other stuff in a really dark Choas Black, Scab Red, Skull White, or Bleached Bone. Let it dry and it looks great! :D
