Yeah his first upgrade is a 2 or 4 Defense Bonus and a Regeneration of 1, then he gets an additional +2 to Dexterity, and the final upgrade ups the Regeneration of 1 to a 2. You need to have your PC have a total repair (With item bonuses) in excess of 20 to upgrade him fully yourself. If I recall correctly!
