_PerfectAgent_
Clicky! The earliest you should start at is "1822 AD Charles Babbage's Difference Engine." You could start later though.

Astrotoy7
I'd call an abacus, as first used in ancient china a computer of sorts..... mtfbwya I remember seeing a great documentary about the hostory of computers and they made reference to ancient objects like an abacus as the progenitors of later devices... MennoniteHobbit
Some stuff... (clicky) (look under the science category, and look for early computer histories etc. I actually am using this guide to study for the competition.) ENIAC: developed by the Navy (? or Army) to predict missile trajectories. Early computers used punch cards to be programmed. Were always very large and heavy in size because of the massive amounts of vacuum tubes needed.

ExcelsioN
It depends...are you talking about PC's or proper big computers? I know that the British used a very early type of computer to crack German codes during WW2.
