logoth
I've finally decided to play the Jedi Knight series, after finishing the two KOTOR games.. I'm wondering what order I should play the games in. I can't seem to find a timeline of the series anywhere, and I have this strange obsession of playing series of games in order from first to last. Can someone give me a hand with this?

Can someone give me a hand with this? 1. Dark Forces 2. Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight 3. Jedi Knight Expansion: Mysteries of the Sith 4. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast 5. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Good choice.
toms
Dark forces was great, but its a doom era sprite game (without mouselook i think) which makes it quite hard to play if you are used to todays FPSs. There were a number of homemade projects to either upgrade the engine (like glDoom) or to make total conversions for Jedi Knight, JO, etc.. Not sure if any of them were finished, but if any of them were then it might be better to play that one than the original game. Anyone know if any of them are any good? jon_hill987
Only the first few levels of the JA total conversion were finished last time I checked.
TheMadDoofer
It's only three levels, but it is very well done.
Astrotoy7
wow....I couldnt handle playing those older games again... sure they were fun back then, but c'mon.. I find it easy to play a retro RPG, but in a game like DF/JK the graphics and game engines have come along so far that playing the old chool stuff is just plain annoying IMO at least play JO and JA...that'll keep you goin for a cpl of days, then make them coasters as I have. you've played KOTOR, that is the ZENITH of SW Gaming. If you havent played X-Wing Alliance, then go out and do that. That is old too, but damn awesome Great storyline mtfbwya
TheMadDoofer
I still play XWA on my old computer - but be sure to get a joystick if you want to play it.

Yeah, I recommend starting on Jedi Knight, even though even that has a slightly difficult-to-understand interface and controls. Although most people said they disliked it, Jedi Outcast is my favorite game in the whole series The cutscenes in JK kick JO's ass, though. Speaking of old games: I miss Yoda Stories It worked on my old 98, but once I got my new XP and thought one day, "That was a pretty fun game, I kidna wanna try it out again," I got that error all XP users get when trying to use a very old game. It's not even in LA's Classics section anymore
TheMadDoofer
I'm still trying to get JK to work on XP with no progress. I think I'll give up soon. PLEASE HELP ME
logoth
I'm not too worried, I've been playing through Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger lately (circa 1994). Of course, the main reason is for nostalgia more than the graphics. Thanks for the list, I'll be picking them up as soon as I find them around town. Any other reccomendations as to other good SW titles I should look at?
TheMadDoofer
If you like RTS games, Galactic Battlegrounds is pretty good. It's Age of Empires Star Wars. Literally.

Any other reccomendations as to other good SW titles I should look at? that seemed to be the tiem for arcade style games with lots of FMV cutscenes... of which Rebel Assault II is the ultimate experience. Still holds up well even today. Love that B-Wing crash sequence !! mtfbwya
jokemaster
I LOVED Rebel Assault II. Last time I played it was right before I got my new laptop, two years ago! But the best part was definetely the easter eggs. BTW, I still find Dark Forces playable if you just want a little run+gun to cool the nerves. PLEASE HELP ME I just installed JK again to see if it would run...and it does, without a hitch so far. Just blasted through the first level again...ah, the memories. It looks dated, but runs fine at 1600x1200. Heh. Anyway, do you have WinXP Service Pack 2 installed? I know some people don't like it for various reasons, but it did improve compatibility with older games, and allow you to install and play them. If you get an error message on installation, asking for a dll file or something, just click IGNORE, and installation should continue normally. Hope that helps. AS for playing the games...do it in order. Yes, Dark Forces and JK look dated now...but they do give you Kyle's background, and they have some great level design. In DF you *can* look up and down, you just have to press a key to do it rather than mouselook.
TheMadDoofer
I don't have it installed. Does microsoft have an executable I can download? (My old comp isn't hooked up to the net.)

(My old comp isn't hooked up to the net.) Go here and on the right hand side it tells you how to get hold of SP2. You can use Windows Update (Internet Explorer required) or order a CD from MS. Alternatively, check some PC magazines with cover disks - sometimes they carry updates like these. I seem to recall I got a CD with it on from a mag soon after it's release, but I've lost it. Heh. I'll just put it all out there and say that aside from pretty graphics, Dark Forces >> Half-Life 2 in every way ... and it is much more fun to play. Still. The thing about graphics in games is that though they can blow you away or disappoint you for the first 20 minutes or so... once the initial impression wears off and you get absorbed in the game your imagination just fills in the gaps. Like: i'm 2/3rd of the way Doom3 at the moment... and though i went WOW for the first level or so, the graphics now seem no more impressive than any other game. Or if you watch a film on vhs instead of dvd then the first 10 minutes are terrible... but after that you get absorbed in the film and don't notice the poor picture quality. Gameplay, on the other hand, can sometimes age badly... as many conventions have developed over the years that leave games without them to feel fairly unintuitive. Mouselook being one. Playing a game without mouselook these days can be really tricky!!! ----- The problem with fan mods these days is they take so much work that they never get finished on time... that DF upgrade has been going for years, and only has 3 levels done. And already the JA engine looks nearly as out of date as the DF one did when they started. SO people are starting on HL2 mods, but they won't get finished before HL2 is forgotten. sigh. --------- The JK saber combat may be limited, but it balances a lot better with the weapons, items and force powers than in JO... which is basically a saber & force only game. So you have just as wide a range of options.
TheMadDoofer
Just got Jedi Knight to work - I forgot how good it is. (And how dated the graphics are - MY EYES!) It's still great though.
