lukeskywalker1
My McAfee virus scanner is from 2002, and hasn't been updated since last year. I need a free virus scanner, that is kept up to date. Many place offer trial periods, which is cool, but I need a permanent one. Anything good out there? Not a spyware scanner either, I have like 3-4 of those (Spyware Killer, SpySweeper, Microsoft AntiSpyware, and my Mcafee has a spyware scanner to.) Thanks -lukeskywalker1
Samuel Dravis
AVG Antivirus is a good one.

Astrotoy7
sorry, but the free AVG is a joke. Notice that they put all the decent features into their "pay" version... Im not sure about avast, never used it You get what you pay for Im afraid. Just fork out for some new AV software, its damn worth it. Especially if you have people using that compy for online banking etc. If you dont do anything like that on it, then hey, AVG might be what you need after all just to keep those garden variety viruses at bay mtfbwya
swphreak
I agree, Free AVG is a joke. Just fork out for a Virus Scanner. I think McAfee is like 30 bucks a year.
Kjølen
Yes, I have AVG. It scans. It finds more viruses than Norton. It doesn't do **** about it. It won't heal them, it won't quarentine them. It won't do anything. Just by McAfee or Norton, they aren't that bad.
Lorden Darkblade
I use Norton Internet Security 2005 here, and I must say, it is very good. I never got a virus. trojan or spyware.
Father Torque
I would recommend eTrust EZ Antivirus. It is the most compatible program that I have used, and I've used alot.
toms
I'm sure Free AVG used to heal and quarantine viruses... has this changed recently? If so it makes it kind of useless.
•-BLaCKouT-•
Mine's quarantined stuff within the last two weeks. I can understand that it can't quarantine a file that's in use, in which case AVG will tell you where the file is and what it's called so that you can delete it manually. I suppose it also depends on what kind of sites you visit. Increased probablilty etc... B.

Especially since norton is easy to fake and McAfee is rising in ease to fake as well. Kinda funny.
Kjølen
Originally posted by InsaneSith Learn to use it. We've been through this, it's not a matter of "looking for an option". It's simply not there. •-BLaCKouT-•
Dunno what version you're running but mine tells me the location of the file. Next time mine runs across one I'll show ya. [shrugs] B.

Astrotoy7
I cant believe people actually use'free' AVG..... need that $30.00 for rocket fuel eh ?? Just spring for the latest Mcafee/Norton/Anything else, evem the pay version of AVG. I can personally say Norton's support was excellent.... They once took me through a , manual uninstall over the phone, which is a huge process, no charge of course Im sure McAfee's would most likely have some great support too... mtfbwya

edlib
Never had a problem with Norton. It's not that hard to find discounted. That being said, I have the free AVG on my 2nd (only occasionally used) computer downstairs and it's always worked fine. It's what I always recommend to people who don't wish (for whatever reason) to pay for real AV software or definitions updates. I totally abandoned McAffee products years ago when I got ZERO support from them for boxed software I had just bought... just sales pitches to sign up for thier new online services (which I have since had to delete off of more brand new PCs than I care to remember because of the way that particular crap crippled the system.) Alegis
Been using AVG ever since the trial on NOD32 (best AV IMO) expired. Works okay
toms
AVG used to get very good reviews, be highly recommended and used to remove/heal/quarantine stuff fine. I also had terrible experiences with Paid for versions of McAfee (on two different computers) and when i first installed AVG if fixed a number of things that McAfee didn't get close to. I will say that recently i've heard several people mention that AVGfree doesn't remove the viruses, but i haven't had one recently so i can't test it. I'm wondering if maybe they have changed the way it works, or crippled it in some way to make people buy the full one. Which would be a shame as it always used to work great for me. Anyone shed any light?
lukeskywalker1
toms, I think I am going to download it and test it out. It can't hurt, even if it is a waste of time
lukeskywalker1
Report: Yeah, I downloaded it. I scanned, and it found nothing. I've only had three spyware incidents on this computer. One kept downloading spyware, and replaced Windows Media Player, I had to run system restore to get rid of them (luckily, they disappeared) After I reinstalled Media Player the installer renamed the bad one media(2) or something, and the scanner picked it up and I deleted it. Because of the name change it was inactive. Another time I had spyware was through the ads here, which was easily fixed. The other time was when I installed Flashget or something... some sort of Internet Download Accelerator that came with Spyware. Microsoft's Anti-Spyware found that and killed it. The only virus I have ever had was in the 90s. The dreaded Anti-EXE Virus screwed up a few of my computers. Little did I know it was on some disks with downloaded data from an external computer... just kept killing stuff. My dad was able to fix the PC though. rccar328
I used to use AVG Free...but then my computer had a meltdown, and I had to do a full system restore. The first thing I reinstalled was AVG Free, but then I almost immediately got a worm that any decent antivirus software should've easily done away with (it's a few years old now). Whatever you do, don't get AVG Free. Pay some dinero for a decent program.
