well, after seeing 'Serenty', i'm quite convinced that it will be very difficult for people to choose between RoTS and Serenity as the best sci-fi movies that have been released this year. the movie was just absolutely fantastic, especially the acting. the story was kinda predictable, but they did just enough to keep you on your toes. above all, the action sequences and the dialog easily made up the best parts of this movie.

definately one of this year's few "have-to-see-this-in-the-theatre" movies. its definately worth the $7-8 pricetag. :D

While I normally end up agreeing with you stinger, RotS can't hold a candle to Serenity:D

"It's not that there HAS to be a sequel. It's just that I've got so many IDEAS..."

OK, I'm gonna go grab some AK's and head out to hollywood to ensure those ideas happen, WHO'S WITH MEEEEEEEEE!

*downright unpleasant* I thought I told you all not to spoil any leaf on the wind type stuff.

At least the other secret's still safe...

Kaylee's the best character on the show and what few lines she gets are pretty good,

Ashley, I laughed my head off on that one:D

BEST SCENE: warning big romantic spoiler....

Kaylee and the doctor have sex at the end, right when they dissappear below the screen, River pokes her head out of the hatch above them and just stares at them, I couldn't stop laughing after that:D

Who knew River was such a perv:D

That and any scene where Jayne opens his food hole:D

I went and saw it at the mall during matinee hours (afternoon?) and only paid 5.50 for the ticket... seriously, why pay 8.75 just to see it at night, when you can pay several dollars less and go during the day? heh.

Ok ok, youre right, thats the best scene for romance and humour, though Kaylees line in the bar was pretty damn good.

I think Jayne is my favourite chara of the guys. Hes just so cool, and rather nice to look at too, although Mal and Wash arent anything to sneeze at lol. Doc... he's just too primpy for my tastes... and Im not the type that drools over the muscular manly types either. ^_^;;

$5 any day anytime, actually just raised from $4 bucks, now turn green as a rodian:D

we may not have much to do around here, but gosh darnit we've got cheap theaters XP

And I don't see why the box is down so much it was packed when I saw it, and the parking lot wasn't nearly full, I think most people were there to see it?

In the town I grew up in, I think ticket prices are like 7.50 regularly now.. but when I was little the ticket prices were 2.50 at night time... then the owner retired and some family bought it and the old hotel next to it, and rennovated the whole place, giving us more than just one screen, and also jacking up the prices... >_>

*Blows Raspberry* "though Kaylee is mine, followed by Inara, and then River."

LOL caught ya:D

Kaylee is ALWAYS the hottest just because she is:D I'm always dirty from work, so naturaly like a girl with some engine grease on her;)

Inara's a prostitute, and River, I don't remember how old she is, but she seems too young.

Inara is a courtesan, which technically is the same thing, but they are more than just the average 10$ hooker out on the street, they are refined, cultured, and skilled in mind-blowing ways, like a Geisha, only not asian. :) And they are extremely expensive.

River I believe is 17 in the show and the series.

But I agree, I like dirty girls (and no I dont mean that in the 'naughty' sense). lol partly why I loved that scene of River that I said was the best. ;)

i'm not quite sure what it is about that scene, but right at the end with River holding those two bloody axes... :naughty:

and i was really wanting to watch her open a can of whup-*** on those guys with the rifles at the end. hehe...

anyways, i only paid $6.00 for my ticket. sometimes, i really enjoy the benefits of being a college student. :D

I saw it...and perhaps not having seen anything of Firely may have not been 100% helpful. It does seem to be a great achievement for a production house that obviously doesnt have a bottomless well of $$$ (like Lucasfilm for instance!)

Still, the magic I felt watching ANH, ESB and ROTJ, and even parts of ROTS is just not there in such a movie(for me anyway). ANH came out in 77. Its nearly 30 damn years on and we're all here on a STARWARS related forum....thats gotta tell you something about what SW is all about....especially the OT...its just TIMELESS :)

Still, not meaning to take anything away from Serenity. They did a great job and a sequel would be awesome :D It does indeed make we want to track down those firefly DVDs and check em out :)

I have a couple of WTFs/queries :

why arent the doc and that engineer girl dead...they both go limp and 5 minutes later, theyre makin love... :(

the black guy with the ninja sword.... he seemed to have his throat crushed, how did he recover quickly enough to call the troops off...

...But I agree, I like dirty girls...

w00t !! *high fives*

Kaylee and the doctor end up fine because River tossed in Simon's medical bag, and Simon being the genius doctor he is, and Zoe being a capable field medic from time in the war, they were patched right up.

As for the operative, His throat was perhaps less crushes as...semi-crushed ;)

Courtesan, Companion, same thing, they just called it something different for the setting.

When those of us that say that Serenity is better than Star Wars we (or atleast I), mean the new trilogy, the Jar-Jar Menace, Clone Bores, and Revenge of the Sith... (although RotS seemed to have its moments).

And here are your answers:

Doc and Kaylee arent dead because they werent mortally wounded. Kaylee got hit with a dart with some paralysis drug in it. Doc got hit in the hip I think. And they were behind the blast doors. Also River tossed in her brothers med kit before the doors closed and she started kicking reaver-ass. :D

Apparently the asassin didnt get his throat totally smashed in or he would have choaked to death, and the guy is pretty tough and seems to have alot of martial arts training.

*high-fives astrotoy in return* :)

" and even parts of ROTS "

Care to elaborate;)

Compare the characters in Serenity to the NT and you'll be surprised at which ones are equally cool and which are better;)

@Ashley, you just like Inara cuz she's...*snipped*

*Don't go there Johnny* D3, IS, etc.

XP

and that's why I don't like her,

and River looks twelve.

" and even parts of ROTS "

Care to elaborate;) ...

some parts of ROTS were classic Star Wars/Lucas, awe inspiring and awesome - for the first time in the PT...

*Opening sequence.... jawdropping... the Republic Destroyer creeps along, the jedi starfighters zoom along and zoom into the hugest space battle ever created for film.... For ppl like me who have waited 20+ years for ROTS, it was just a wonderful way to start the final chapter..

*Sidious puts on the hoodie :p

*Order 66, the jedi purge - yoda drops his cane in anguish, then decapitates two clone commanders

*Yoda pwns imperial guards = FREAKIN AWESOME

*Yoda vs Sidious, Sidious with the "My little green friend" line :D

*Sidious brings Vader to coruscant - look at the weather - its tellin ya something bad goin on !

*The creation of Vader. the helmet goes on....wow

*The ending, "Binary Sunset v2" cool

Comparing movies and saying one is better is just silly. Given that, SW is a phenomenon... Serenity would fall under a cult following class IMO.. which is cool too

I posted this over in the swamp, but I'll re-post it here

What's that? Orson Scott Card LOVES Serenity?

I'll let that sink in a moment.

Orson freakin' Scott Card. It may mean little to some or even most of you, but those who read a lot of science fiction know what I'm talking about, I particularly enjoy this snippet the most

Well, guess what.

It's great.

I'm not going to say it's the best science fiction movie, ever.

Oh, wait. Yes I am.

That's right. He said it's the best science fiction movie EVER. :D

If it is indeed the best Sci-Fi film ever (I haven't seen it yet so I don't know), and it is better than ROTS, isn't it funny that ROTS is one of the biggest grossing movies of all time and Serenity will do well just to make its money back in the NA Box Office?

It is a strange world we live in. Depending on word of mouth, the final tally is completely unpredicable.

Box office totals dont decide which movie is going to be the most popular, thats only a concern to those who need to get paid, like the producers, writers, actors, technicians and stuff. Its the people who go see the movies that make it popular. Look at the new star wars trilogy, almost everyone, except the most rabid of star wars fans say that the prequels are bad, except for rots, which is only partially bad.

Another thing is cult following, for example there is Family Guy, that has an enormous following behind it. The dvd sales of the series and the movie (stewies movie), were so good, that Fox had a momentary burst in intelligence and rehired Seth Mcfarlane to do more episodes. Ok so that kinda counterdicts my first paragraph, but still, its the fan base that makes a movie popular, you really cant judge anything in box office (assuming these are just the total of the US sales) totals, wait for the dvd to come out, then wait for all the international movie sales and dvd sales...

hmmm... circular logic is fun! lol

best sci-fi movie....huh! no freakin way :( SW doesnt count as sci-fi, being offically dubbed a 'space fantasy' by sw.com

best sci-fi movie..... gotta go with 2001...hands damn down ;)

Prime, Id recommend you stop reading this thread, because rather than being pleasantly suprised, you may be curiously let down by the time you get to see it !! :p

And then, other parts of RotS were classic GL crap. like Anikins inifamous "Is she alright?... noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!" which was just pure cheese.

"I know. Somehow I've always known.", etc.

Don't give me that crap about how the OT wasn't cheeseball as well. The whole point is that it's supposed to be cheesy. They're camp movies.

Look at the new star wars trilogy, almost everyone, except the most rabid of star wars fans say that the prequels are bad

Really? I've noticed it as the complete opposite of that.

But yeah, anyway, Serenity is good.

I'm not saying it does. I'm just saying it is wierd that a movie that some are touting as the best sci-fi film ever made might turn out to be a bit of a box office flop (NA at least).

thats only a concern to those who need to get paid, like the producers, writers, actors, technicians and stuff.
And the fans who want to see a sequel. ;)

Its the people who go see the movies that make it popular.
But you just said it didn't matter if anyone went to see the movie (i.e. payed for a ticket that shows up in the box office figures). OK, I'm just teasing you. :D

Look at the new star wars trilogy, almost everyone, except the most rabid of star wars fans say that the prequels are bad, except for rots, which is only partially bad.
Is that really true though? I think overall (fans and non-fans) the respones to I and II were reasonable (not so much for I) and excellent for III. I mean, on the IMDB I got a fair if unspectacular 6.4/10 with all demographics giving it about that range. II had a solid 7.0/10 with interestingly the best ratings coming from the demographic that was the same age as the main character. III got an very good rating of 8.0/10, which I think you'll agree is fairly rare for a film, especially in the sci-fi genre. And all three got a "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

So what I'm trying to say with all that babbling is that I think claims of "everyone hated the prequels" is exaggerated. And I would almost say the opposite, and that most casual fans enjoyed the films more than some of the hardcore fans (who tend to be older fans). Certainly, the vast majority of people I know, SW fans and otherwise, greatly enjoyed ROTS. Your experience may differ. :)

But that is sort of off topic in regards to Serenity. I'll see what I think after this weekend!

Prime, Id recommend you stop reading this thread, because rather than being pleasantly suprised, you may be curiously let down by the time you get to see it !!
I'm going in with reasonable if unspectacular expectations. I'll have to see if the film meets them...
