lucasarts? What are they up to these days?

I just realised that I have no idea what lucasarts are developing these days!

I remember when I used to check the lucasarts website on a regular basis to see what was being developed, and they usually had several games in development I was excited about. Intrigued, wandered over there just now and (although it looks as I remember it) there seems to be only Galaxies, Battlefront 2 and Empire at war going on. What happened to all their great game ideas? Did I just hit a lull before some big announcements, or are they just pumping out a couple of Star Wars sequels a year and that is it?

Surely now that Ep3 is out the way they have a whole era of ep3 to ep4 to play with, so they could come up with some great ideas for new SW games. And I can't see ANY DS or PSP games announced. I'd have thought it would be a no-brainer to release all their old SCUMM games on the DS to play with the touchscreen. ?!?

But most worrying at all they seem to have no new ideas at all. One expansion pack, one sequel, and ANOTHER attempt to get a SW RTS right (only about 5 years after the rts boom ended). Thats it?

*feels sad*

My God, we could only wish. Also how about a new adventure one, a spoof of SW called "Stop Rebel SCUMM?" That'd be cool. Gladius 2 would be a nice one as well. Am I the only one who loved that game?

Anywho, a new Indy adventure is coming out in 2007. Only LEC game I plan on really looking into in the future. I'm kinda getting sick of all the SW titles. Empire at War looks good, but until a new FPS set in the OT or an X-Wing flight sim comes out, I really could care less....

The entire continent of Asia would disagree.

Anyway, out of all the games being produced right now, EaW is the only one that looks promising, and it's still only in alpha. Battlefront II is even crappier than the first, and I know it's only beta right now, but I'm taking that into consideration when I rate it. Galaxies... well it's Galaxies, a bunch of whiny tards bitching about how they aren't getting enough experience points and what have you.

I think the problem is right now it's being run like a corporation.

For the PSP they do have Battlefront II, but it appears that the Episode III PSP is fully dead, I can't even get replies from Ubisoft regarding it anymore.

As for RTS, there are about 20 coming out from Sept '05 to '06 ... far from dead, it is the high-point in PC gaming right now.

As for LucasArts, they should rename themselves WhocaresArts, as they seem to be (1) Milking galaxes, (2) Milking the fact that they somehow manages 3.5Million Battlefront sales, and ... well, Empire at War.

I would disagree.

And yes, being run like a big corporation now. Didn't they put some merketing guy as head of some department that had nothing to do with marketing?

I think they just drink hot chocolate and have pillow fights at LA HQ now. It's the only explaination. :(

I like that explanation. I'm going to go with it as its more comforting than the other options.

Do asians have a big thing for RTS then? I thought they were all into MMORPGs and starcraft (still)?

RTS is certainly no longer in the big boom period it was in 4 or 5 years ago, its got to the stage where its a fully mature genre with accepted rules and elements and a few top games... which means almost no point in trying to create new franchises as they can't compete with the top games in the genre. Still with a hardcore set of RTS fans, but with far less opportunities to sell a lot of games.

It would just be nice to see them making some attempts at innovative new games. They always sued to be at the cutting edge of game genres, now they only seem to be on the trailing edge of them.

I want to want to check their site again...

yeah that's an odd thing that they have only Battlefront II and Empire at War specially at this time ...

long ago, i remember when the new Generation came, they annouced all these game togather: Jedi Knight, Monkey Island, Galaxies, Obi-Wan and Knights of the Old Republic ...

and now the 360 is nearly out, PC is now steping into next new generation already

I believe they are up to something :twogun:hmmmm a Jedi Knight game :smash: ?

First off, StarCraft is an RTS. Second, in Korea alone they hold RTS tournaments every 6 months. As Txa said, there are currently 20 RTS' in developement right now. Not to mention Age of Empires III will be coming out, which will definitely cause more RTS' to go into production. RTS's have never died, slowed in creation, but never died. Right now, globally, they're sitting higher than FPS'.

Maybe in your small area, but globally, it's actually bigger than it was 4-5 years ago. They're hitting hard in America again, Asia never stopped.

Sounds to me like this is just your opinion rather than actual fact. You should probably stop being so negative.

Empire at War seems to be promising some new and exciting things.
