Services you'd advise against.

eMusic.com

Seemed nice enough, got 100 free downloads for shopping at anchor blue, got my downloads, cancelled the subscription. Today my mom pointed out charges on her credit card to an emusic something.

They've been charging my mom 10 bucks a month since I first got high speed internet.

Don't use this site, it's great in it's music, but they're asshats.

Anybody else run into some services they'd advise against?

Discount intimate full body massage by a 400 pound woman named Tom :p

Actually, come to think of it, Best Buy's Geek Squad is probably the most inept computer/electronics techs in history. Back when I was young and naive, and actually bought my PCs from Best Buy as opposed to building my own bad@ss rigs, their geek squad never once properly diagnosed a PC problem. Or when they did, made me go through so many unnecessary hoops that I didn't know what to think. For instance, when my Floppy drive was dying, they recommended that I make a backup of my HD before it was sent out to be serviced. I didn't have a CD burner at the time, and asked if there was any other way that I could possibly get my documents off. They neglected to tell me about a simple crossover cable connection for a LAN, or even simpler, a Flash Disk for $30. So, I shelled out $60, yes $60 for a full hard drive backup, when a max of $20 or $30 would have done the trick for LAN or Flash Disk.

Happily, I am almost done with a PC Repair technical school course, and have since met a great PC Tech who is always willing to help me out, so no longer have to put up with the absolute money grubbing, idiots at Best Buy.

Whew, that felt good. Nice bitching thread you got going here.

Generally you throw PCs*, not fly them. :p

I actually haven't run into any really hateful service because I've always tried to research and avoid the bad ones. I have never gotten a package PC because my first one (166mhz blazer!) was built by my dad. After that, my uncle showed me how to build my own (he's the ultimate hardware geek). He's awesome. Granted, a bit scary, but awesome. :D

Plus it's just fun to think about the sweeeet hardware you're gonna stick into it. :D

* out the window. :D

yeah that's the best part. And hey, all the best hardware geeks are a bit scary. Like all the best authors are insane.
Never really liked insane authors, or painters either... oh well! :p

Oh, and was it you that Lady Jedi said made my avatar?
Yeah. Carradine is cool. :)

Enough off topic though. I also don't like Paypal either. Their user agreement is insane...

My mom and dad bought me 2 pair of jeans for 40 bucks, and they gave them a free 100 song downloads from emusic.com. I was browsin around, and couldn't find anything, then, as a joke, searched for Flogging Molly, a band that few know of, and bam. In an hour I had downloaded all 100 songs, which totaled 3 flogging molly cds, 2 dropkick murphy cds, 1 bowling for soup cd, and 1 Millencolin cd.

Hell yes :D

Heh, last post on pg 14 of the "Very good things" thread.

You got pwnt Bongo. ^_^

well yeah, I know that now. two years ago, I didn't know there was a plausible option

Now, I see Custom PCs are the only way to fly.

honestly I find dell to be a great way to customize a pc...there are probably a lot of ppl out there who will dis agree but i don't care what they think...Unless they're moderators and i get booted from the forums.

now, to the point, steer clear of earthlink. My bro paid all his bill's then they cancelled his membership for "not paying his bills" and just the other day he got a bill for earthlink.. GRRR!! :Pir1: I'd like to sick pirates after them...

In America everything that isn't in regular rotation on MTV is 'underground'. x-P

Like Led Zeppelin and U2!

I'm not joking.

But zeppelin is more mainstream these days. But if you venture into the deep darkness of underground known as Pink Floyd, you will be cast out of society :p

The only place that I have bought music from online is http://www.allofmp3.com. Anywhere else is, as said above, rent-a-ware.

Can't really think of any services to avoid. Maybe the port-a-potty at the local park...

And, yes, I have only just now discovered the -.

Its weird that they can implement on-the-fly encoding into numerous formats... and charge based on filesize/quality... but all the official stores are stuck with restrictive "one format, one price" systems.

Freedom of being unofficial i guess.

Its also weird that with official channels you often seem to pay more the worse the quality is.. buy a cd for £8.99 and thats 80p a track. Download a lower quality version with DRM for 90-70p a track. buy a crappy quality ringtone for £2.

Weird.

Yeah, I always thought that allofmp3's model is excellent. I'd buy a LOT of music there if only it wasn't shady.. :(

I think that's the freedom of being based in Russia and exploiting a loophole in the law. :D

Not really. If a normal user can't get what they want any other way, they'll pay it.

Yeah, I was happy because it said I cancelled. At that point everything was nifty. Now, I have told everyone to not even think of using emusic.

Anyhow, it's sad but true that if it's not on MTV, basically no-one knows of it. That's why everytime I go to my friends friends (that's right), I watch FUSE. Hell, that, G4TechTv, Boomerang, and the Nicktoon channel are more than enough reason for me to get digital cable here.

Ah well : \

Musicmatch Jukebox

The initial program came pre-installed on my first home pc. At one point this was my prefered method of mp3ing. It would rip my cds, auto tag the tracks, and let me burn to disc. Another cool feature, is it would let me also print my own jewel box, or cd labels and automatically print the tracks on the back of my jewel case, while also allowing me to import photos from anywhere on my pc. With this I made some awsome compilations, and what not to take in my car, or anywhere else. In fact, I loved the simplicity of it so much, that I opted to pay an extra $10 and include all future upgrades of the program to be downloaded without extra charges. The downside, is this program upgraded about every six months or less.

Somewhere between versions 8.whatever and now.....it just stopped burning CDs, the player would crash constantly, and it would forever prompt me to upgrade to the new version, even if I already did. The other nasty thing, is if you had downloaded a cool skin and installed it for your player...it would defualt back to some generic grey skin that the latest version featured, and it was a pain in the ass to re-install your old skin....IF it was even compatible with the latest version! Not to mention that MM would spam my email inbox pimping out some lame new artists I could give less of a care about. After several emails to tech support, and a generic "try un-installing, and re-installing", nothing worked....and finally I got another generic, "sorry about your problem, thanks for using MM Jukebox version whatever point whatever.

I threw in the towell and had to finally uninstall the damn thing, and use other methods for my mp3ing. Nowdays, it's a bit more difficult. I rip my CDs using the token Media Player, and use HP's "Record Now" for my burning. At this point, I refuse to have to pay for anything else.

MM Jukebox is a fine example of "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

Damn shame. I had tons of fun with it back in the day.

Stay away from this program at all costs.
