Point Man
Zambrano is the bright spot in an otherwise awful year. You would be celebrating a good year if you rooted for the Cardinals. You do not know the power of the Cardinals.

Phantom Joker
Was at a ball game last year and saw a tee shirt that busted me up. Completely Useless By September Don't feel bad, Jae. It could be worse. You could be a Devil Rays fan...

Phantom Joker
We would like to thank the Kansas City Royals for participating in this year's Major League Baseball Season. Don't forget to pick up your commemorative "We suck out loud!" tee shirts on the way out of the stadium...
Cygnus Q'ol
Damn Pirates! I know this thread is for your Cubbies, but my Brewers are roughing it just the same. Bullpen, what Bullpen? If you can't beat the Reds and friggin' Pirates, what chance do you have against the impervious Cardinals? Is it football season yet?
Jae Onasi
Yes, yes it is football season, the Bears reported to Bourbonnais for camp yesterday. Go Bears! Cubs are only 13 1/2 out of the wildcard. Edit: @Cygnus (and anyone else interested)--any baseball discussion is fine by me--I probably should edit the title to "Baseball '06". Edit2: Cubs beat the Cardinals!!!! Woohoo!
JediKnight707
This is somewhat random, but I felt forced to post it: The Cubs could use the Force right now... As for me, I'm a Giants fan!! Go Bonds!! Now everyone hates me twice as much...
Jae Onasi
Bonds has done some great things. It's unfortunate that it'll always be in dispute because of the steroid question. The Cubs could use the Force, and also use some healthy pitchers and people in the outfield who know how to hit the cut-off man, catch the ball without dropping it, and make a hit when there are men on 3rd. Cubs beat the cardinals 2 in a row now!!! Go CUBS!

Jae Onasi
Poor Cedeno though... I'm still amazed that umpire called his bean a foul :/. Looked like it hurt something awful. It hurts a lot less with a win, though. @RJM--I'm the one with the black belt. He's the one who does sword fighting re-enactments, which we know transfer amazingly well to pillow fighting skills. So, it's a draw. That's assuming, of course, that we haven't just fallen asleep in bed, because, as you know, we have reached Auld Phart status. Mav
I feel bad for the Cubbies, seems they can never catch a break. I'm still saddened that my Braves divisional champion streak is most likely coming to an end this year though
Jae Onasi
Who knows--if the trade rumors bear out, Maddux may be leaving the team, and who knows--he might end up back in Atlanta. Losing Maddux would really suck. He gave us a great game today and he's a joy to watch pitching. Even when he loses he's great to watch. On the happier side of things.... Cubs win again against the Cardinals!!! Woohoo! Three in a row!!! We win tomorrow and we sweep them! And get our first 4-in-a-row streak for the season!!!! Zambrano's pitching against Carpenter. Should be a great duel. Edit: Where's the broom emoticon? Cubs swept the Cardinals!!!!!!!! Woohoo! : :
Point Man
Why is it the only team the Cubs can beat is the Cardinals? Oh well, at least we're still in first.
Cygnus Q'ol
Would that be a corn, straw, or push broom that is sitting next to Jimbo on the couch right now? Cubbies, holy crap! Too awesome. It's unfortunate though, that it isn't for the division or something bigger. ...although in baseball, pride is synonomous with rosin, chalk, infield dirt and hot dogs. The Cubs will definately enjoy this series and hopefully (for them) build on the positives. Jae, enjoy this brief respit and wave your Cubbie hat high in the air with pride. Jimbo, don't sweat it, 1st place is a lock. Bearnote: Briggs is at camp and has already re-acclaimed the starting LB spot. All of the draft picks so far are tearing ass. The free agent pick ups are challenging for jobs. Benson is poised at the gates like a racehorse. ...and Grossman is still walking upright. So far, all is good in Bourbonais. Jae Onasi
I'm in mourning--Maddux got traded!! I saw the Brewers decided to dump salary and get rid of Carlos Lee. Cygnus, I have an entire hardware store's worth of brooms on my couch right now. At least Maddux got a win against the Cards. Benson has to work his butt off if he wants the job--Jones got over 1300 yards least season. Of course, you can never have too many good running backs or QBs. I'm saying lots of prayers for Grossman to stay healthy and Urlacher to be the Linebacker of the Millenium.
Cygnus Q'ol
At least the Maddux trade makes sense. Let's face it. No matter what we may feel about the guy, he's not getting any younger. He's still effective to the point where he's not going to be put out to pasture just yet, might as well get something for him. As a Cubbie, I'm sure it's hard to let him go, AGAIN! ...but, at least it's understandable. The Brewers and their inability to run a team professionally is a different story. They've only just started developing a farm system and they trade away anyone who produces within a few seasons. Just long enough for the player to get good, then wisk him away before he does something terrible. ...like win a division. Good thing it's almost football season. I can't take much more dissappointment. Can't even beat the Rockies. Oh boy... Speaking of football, I agree with the Benson assessment. Not only will he have to produce running and catching as a playmaker, but he's got big shoes to fill when it comes to blocking. I don't know if you watched Jones last year, but he's an exeptionally great blocker. If Benson wants to keep the spot, he'll have to prove that he can protect sexy Rexy. I heard that they unchained Mike Brown last weekend and he escaped Halas Hall and was found at the Zoo trying to wrestle a panther.
Jae Onasi
You know, I don't understand how the Cubs can sweep the Cardinals, and then get shut out by the Pirates only a few days later. However, they won today so I'm happy. Benson's out for at least 2 weeks with a shoulder injury, and Jones is dealing with a hamstring problem according to the 5 August 06 Sun-Times article. Better now than during the season, I guess. They have the strangest things happen to them in pre-season, I swear. Mike Jones--I don't think they were able to pull him off that panther til it was totally mauled, either.

I watched him for his four years in College and he is a touchdown machine. They don’t give out the Doak Walker Award to just anyone. At Texas he rushed for 5,540 yards and 64 touchdowns. He was very good at protecting the passer and adequate pass catcher. He also hardly ever fumbles the ball. I’ve only seen a few running backs at Texas better than him. We are talking about a team that produced running backs such as Earl Campbell, Priest Holmes, Eric Metcalf and Ricky Williams (did you notice I put Ricky last). Don’t feel bad about getting shut out by the Pirates. I heard on the Astros broadcast last night that Pittsburg has the lowest ERA in the majors since the All Star break. Jae Onasi
Cubs are only 10 out of the wildcard now. And their elimination number is still in the 40's. Ricky's last in line because he couldn't find the front of the line through all that funny-smelling smoke. Edit--started an NFL thread so we don't get zinged for going off topic talking about Da Bears. Edit2--Hey, Cygnus, aren't the Brewers and Cubs playing again on Tuesday? I'll be surprised if the total runs scored is less than 10. However, stranger things have happened this year.
