Some advice needed...

I just found out this morning that my CPU could actually handle TES IV: Oblivion, and am gonna upgrade this comp so I can play it. All it needs is some more RAM, and a new vid card. The RAM is the easy part, the Vid card is the hard part. I found this thanks to newegg, and am seriously considering this one. I have 70 bucks right now, and 20 more on the way, as well as I am considering selling an old Athlon XP 2000+ processor on eBay (they're going for about 35-40 each through bids, plus shipping). But, I still need money for RAM as well as money for the actual game itself (40 bucks at a local store), so this seems like the best deal I can find on newegg.

Anybody here think that there's a better deal for under 80 bucks?

I know there's not one for under $80, but I would seriously consider saving a few more bucks up and getting a 6800. Don't quote me on this, but for recommended system specs for Oblivion, 6800 was the recommended. Abd for a sweet game like Oblivion I would want the recommended specs. That's what I'm probably gonna do, save up to upgrade my system for the recommended specs until I get it.

I bought a geforce 6800 256 MB PCI Express last year when I was building my gaming rig and it plays everything up to FEAR so far highest settings with excellent framerate. I have a 6600 in a different rig, and it doesn't perform nearly as well. I was surprised really since they didn't seem that different, but 6800 FTW by far.

I suggest you save up and as Moeller said get at least a 6800 if you plan on gaming into the near future.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor.

The thing is, my mom and grandma are talking about getting new computers, but that probably won't happen until June/July-ish. This is basically just a temporary fix, and I don't mind playing it on low settings, considering the graphics are just eye candy, it's the game I want to play ;) Plus once they do get new comps, I'll have this one.

RoxStar, what are your comps specs and what framerates do you get with games on what settings. That really is a nice card, it's just gonna take a little longer to save up for, but it will be worth the extra 20 or so bucks :)

EDIT: I have this compaq: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&lc=en&product=240112&dest_page=product&cc=us&docname=bpb11662

Would there be any problem with installing a 512 stick of this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026. I have the stock 256 stick in as well as a 128 stick of an unknown brand.

How many slots of RAM do you have? I would take out the 128 and throw in the 512 if you only have 2. Also, if youre getting a new video card, looking at the specs on that page, I would also look into getting a better power supply too. 200 watts is really low. Before you spend any $$ on a card, look at what kind of power it will need.

I have a GeForce 6600 that I really love. .

In my older desktop system I added a 128MB 6600GT last year, and it runs Oblivion very well. While XPS laptop does everything on 'Ultra High', this system defaulted to 'Medium' and 640x480, but I've been able to notch up most of the draw distances pretty far without hurting performance at all.

The new 256MB 6800 GS is supposed to be ~$150 and really sweet, if you can manage it it should really do wonders for Oblivion.

Bongo:

I have an AMD Athlon 2100+

768 mb of DDR Ram

nVidia GeForce 6600

40 gig HD + 60 gig HD

Half-life 2 - High settings, no anti aliasing, 1024 x 768 resolution

Battlefield 2 - Mix Between Medium and High Settings 800 x 600 Resolution

Doom 3 -Ultra Settings, 1024 x 768 Resolution (Delicious :))

Quake 4 - High Settings, 800 x 600 Resolution

^ I get framerates of at the very lest 30 fps on those games, Doom and Quake will sometimes jump to about 60, and on the source stress test, I can turn everything on at 1024 x 768 Resolution and get 60 fps average. :)

My friends sometimes make fun of my computer.

"Oh Kevin, you only have an Athlon 2100+ WE have 64 bit processors or Pentium 4's at at least 2.5 ghz" But you know what I say? I'm not upgrading my computer until it won't play a game that I want to play.

Wow. That's damn near exactly what my specs would be after upgrading. You've convinced me to get that card man. Thanks :)

And I have the same outlook on upgrading. That, and I don't buy the comps, my mom and grandma do :)

Still waiting for some advice on PSU's (what type I need)

I wouldn't necessarily reccomend that card. Mine is 256 mb and has openGL 2.0. I would wait for a deal to come up before buy it.

On a side note, it might just be my computer, but Counter-Strike: Source doesn't run exceptionally well, I haven't tried it since the reformat though. But Half-life 2 and Half-life 2:DM run pretty sweet.

EDIT: CS:Source runs perfectly:p

My specs:

3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 (little faster than your CPU)

1 Gig of RAM

6600GT 128mb (over clocked by me)

Half-Life 2 - High, no AA, 1024x768 -

40 FPS on average

Battlefield 2 - Mix of medium and high, no AA, 1024x768 -

40-50 on average (can fluxuate a lot, which kind of sucks, but really BF2's fault)

Doom 3 - High everything, AA, 1024x768 -

50-60; no stutters

Oblivion - Medium; no distance landscape (No "hey, I can see the imperial tower from 3 miles away! cool!") HDR, 1024x768 -

20 in towns, 20 in the forest, 30 near Burma (less trees), 40-50 inside, 30-40 in dungeons. HDR brings it down a bit but it just looks too damn cool!

Hah, an upgrade advice thread - gotta love em.

So, I'm looking for an upgrade as well. I'm prolly going for the 6600 for the video and one gig of RAM. The prob is the processor. I'm turning pro-AMD and going for a new AMD. The problem is, I don't know which AMD to buy? Any good, yet cheap processor anywhere?

go for a venice core amd athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 or above. They're powerful, reletivly cheap now, and overclock nicely, even with the stock heatsink and fan.

Anyhow, I've decided to buy TiE's old graphics card. It's a bit more than I was hoping to ahve to spend, but for the price he's selling it for, I can't beat it.

After that, gonna get a 4-500 watt PSU, and a 512 stick of ram. Can't wait :)

EDIT: I compiled my little parts list...

90 - XFX nVidia (live and die by them) 6600GT 128mb GPU from TiE23

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150089

22 - Logisys 480 watt PSU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817170012

39 - Corsair 512 memory

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026

50 - Oblivion

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=646003

All in all, about 200 dollars. And guess what. It's worth every penny. And even though this pc will probably only last another 4 or 5 months, as long as I get my drivers license within the next 9 weeks, my uncle offered me a job as a driver for his auto repair shop, driving to pick up parts, pick up/drop off customers, all that good stuff, and the way I see it, since the first couple of paychecks I'll get will go towards a custom built comp, I just take the vid card, memory, and PSU from this comp and put them in that one. Forward thinking ftw.

If that makes no sense to you, I just drank 3 rockstars, give me some slack :p

All right! :D

My 7800GS should arrive on Tuesday (if I'm lucky) or Wednesday and if it works, I can get ready to boot that thing to your place.

Also, if it explodes, um... I'll be in Mexico if you want me. :p

But I'm sending two games I don't play any more, you'll like them.

Also Bongo... you have a DVD drive, right?

I'm running oblivion with a 6600GT, gig of Ram, and Athalon 64 3000+. It reccommended medium settings, I boosted it up to 1024x768, bloom lighting, medium textures (I actually lowered this from the recommended because they still looks GREAT), very high draw distances, and medium shadows, no aa. It runs very nicely, inbetween 20-60 depending on where I am. AND my hard drive is in long need of a reformat, so after I do that and reinstall oblivion I should be in good shape :D

So it looks like you made some good choices for hardware there man, hopefully you'll be playin Oblivion before you know it :)
