manoman81 Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/ That's something I never expected to see : | The only question I have is why? I thought that what set Macs apart from PCs were the fact that they did not run Windows. I can understand about some software a person might want, but I'm not a Mac user so if someone could clear this up for me...
toms Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Never thought i'd see it, and I'm a little confused about it as well. The main thing that sells Mac hardware (which is often overpriced compared to the PC equivilent) is the usability of their operating system that comes with it. I'd ahve thought they would do much better to release a version of OSX for PCs.. as most people who try it seem to fall in love with it and want to dump windows as soon as they can. (witness the recent penny arcade conversion). So i'd think it would make more sense for them financially to do things that way round..then people might try out OSX on their PC, like it, and consider buying a full Mac setup the next time round (for the aditional integration and cool looks). For users its excellent though, as the only real flaw with OSX is it's games support. I'd sure be tempted by a Duo Core mac laptop with OSX as my main day-to-day operating system and windows for when i want to play games. But would macs have good enough graphics cards to run modern games anyway? [edit] I like this from the bootcamp page: Word to the Wise Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes. Thats cheeky!
BongoBob Posted April 6, 2006 Author Posted April 6, 2006 Lol, I didn't notice that. I'd love to have that same setup, but with ubuntu linux as a 3rd option You know what, I never thought I'd ever see this, but I also never thought I'd see the day where you could build your own mac.

Yes, I saw this news on another thread and stated that it kinda defeats the reason to "Switch".
IG-64 Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 I think this is less a marketing ploy, and more just a good ability to add to make the product more user friendly. Still, the idea of paying for 2 operating systems for one computer doesn't exactly make me say "Yay!".
BongoBob Posted April 6, 2006 Author Posted April 6, 2006 I would still love to have a pc where I could switch between OSX, XP, and Ubuntu. Too bad you have to use a pentium to use OSX, and I am a strict AMD guy.
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 *cough* http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/product.aspx?view=22&pcid=65dc1649-5fee-4dce-83cc-acf7dbeec70b&crumb=catpage&catid=ea710cad-37b0-4975-bcd6-abfee19961df *cough*
Alkonium Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Interesting, for some reason I sense an Apple-Microsoft Merger in the near future, which means the resulting company will be free to suck, which isn't good.
dtriniman Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 Well considering that Microsoft owns a big chunk of Apple it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
toms Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 1up has been trying out the new apple laptops with PC games like HL2, FEAR and Oblivion - and they seem to reckon its pretty good. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3149424 Not up to 60fps top of the range desktop gaming, but about as good as you will get on most laptops. Sounds cool to me. I'm actually rather tempted to get one of those new macbook pros now...
