Need some advice on the GREs

OK, so I know most of you are worried about the SATs and that stuff. But I know that there are a few grad students around here and I need your advice. I am going to apply for grad school for my masters in instructional tech. In order to get a license to teach (at least here in Ohio) I need to take the GREs. I know this test is intense, but how hard is it? Was there a study guide/book that worked really well for you? Any serious advice would be great. Thanks

I suggest you try and get hold of some past exam papers. that has always worked for the exams I have taken.

That's actually a good idea and gives you a good grasp of what's waiting for you and thus kills excitement a bit. I did that myself, too. Heck some of my teachers gave us these on their own, since they aren't allowed to be reused anyways. Maybe you can ask them about that.

Funny I have to take my ACT tommorow morning. I'll just wing it like I've done with every other Standardized test I've ever taken. Besides I was getting Post-Highschool reading/writing scores in the 2nd grade, and on grade level math. But thats me, I never study and do alright, normally people can't get good grades this way so I suggest you study one of those books either from the Book store or library.

Get one of the GRE study guides. YOu can pick them up at the library, even, if you're like I was at that point and had no money because I was a poor college student.

 

I didn't think it was too much harder than the ACT, but my perspective's a little skewed because I had unholy numbers of undergrad hours. It's a long test, and expect some of the questions to be hard because they're trying to separate out the creme de la creme.

 

If there's a specialty test for education like there was for history when I took it, I would review the basics from the questions that show up on that section in your study guide.

 

Pull out your basic texts in math, science, English, and history for review--I found studying the chapter review at the end of each chapter (when those were available) was very useful. IIRC you get penalized for wrong answers (and that may not be the case now--I took it awhile ago), but if you can narrow down the choices to just two because you reviewed your facts and ruled out a couple of choices, it's worth a shot at a guess.

I lucked out, and at my school Computer Scientists don't have to take the GRE to get into CS grad school.

 

I have quite a few friends who've taken it, and it seems that MOST of the time, you should expect to take the test more than once. Despite your preparations, there are going to be sections and questions that will likely take you by surprise.

 

Getting ahold of books with practice questions will be of great help, and if you are particularly concerned there are places that have class sessions to help take it.
