Fallout, a "post-apocalyptic role playing game", is a must have for any RPG fan, or any gamer in general. Set in the aftermath of a devastating nuclear war, Fallout charts the adventures of the Vault Dweller as he risks life and limb to find a water chip for his home-town, the unlucky Vault 13; one of many massive underground cities constructed (ostensibly) to protect people from the effects of the radiation and the bombs themselves.

From its wonderfully dark sense of humour to the joy of knowing your actions will have actual consequences, this is one of the finest games ever to be released; a classic not only because it was good back then but because it has stood the test of time unlike so many of its contemporaries. Let's put it this way: you don't have to be a nostalgic oldie like teekay to enjoy this thing. :xp:

Why you're still reading this and not downloading it now is a mystery to me...

I just downloaded Fallout, as well as Dues Ex and realMyst. I've already started playing realMyst, and it is vastly improved to its predecessor. Seeing everything in real time instead of prerendered stills is just amazing. It really makes you feel that you are actually in the game. Anyway, I'll start playing Fallout soon; I'm too tired tonight, and I'm pretty busy tomorrow, so I'll get to it whenever I have some substantial free time.

I just started playing it, and it's been good so far. The only problem is that I have no idea what I'm supposed to do. I wish they had a tutorial mode right when you started out of your Vault, since I'm greatly confused. When I was creating my character, the stat screen just popped up out of nowhere, and I saw all of these statistics, and I had no clue on what to do. It's a bit intimidating, especially when KotOR walks you through everything step by step.

My first combat experience was a bit jarring; I was just walking along when this rat popped out of nowhere and started attacking me. Of course, since there's no tutorial mode, I clicked on it several times and hit some keys in rapid succession, trying to figure out how to kill the thing. Actually, I don't really know if it was actually attacking me; I just saw it from the end of screen coming towards me and made a "lunge" at me and my character responding to it by jumping backwards. Either the rat was trying to talk to me and I jumped back in shock, or the rat is actually trying to bite. Anyway, I eventually killed it.

So, it's a bit confusing when you have no idea on what all of these stats mean or what all of the menu screens and buttons do, but so far, it's not bad.

I signed up a while ago but they havent sent anything. Oh well.

You should have gotten a beta key through the e-mail that you used. If I hadn't already gave away my invite for the beta. I give the key to you.

Combat revolves around your skill with your weapon type and the number of action points that you have. The higher your agility. The more action points that you have. By right clicking on the use bar you can control what type of attack you make. First is a normal attack. Second is an aimed attacked signified by a target in the lower right hand corner of the use bar. Third is the burst attack with weapons like the SMG. The word burst will show up in the lower right hand corner of the use bar.

Strength - It modifies carry weight, hit points, weapon handling,

and some weapon skills.

Perception - It modifies some skills and increases accuracy at range.

Endurance - Toughness. It modifies some skills, hit points, and

resistance to poison and radiation.

Charisma - Looks. It modifies speech and barter, as well as NPC reactions.

Intelligence - It modifies dialogue options (gives you more), skill points

given per level, and 'science' skills. High intelligence is

important, seven or eight as a minimum is recommended.

Agility - Speed. It modifies many skills, armor class, and action points.

An Agility of 10 is recommended for snipers.

Luck - It modifies critical chance, some skills, and the outcome of the

game.[/Quote]

Indeed. That's why I sometimes have it difficult to get through the beginning of 'older' games. Fallout, apparently, is no exception. Luckily, you play with the knowledge that this is a classic, and not some mediocre game. :)

Alright, I've been playing some more, and I've just entered Shady Sands. The combat system is actually quite good, and I've gotten used to it. Of course, it's a bit annoying that you have to click a button to end your turn, rather than it ending automatically, but that's alright so far. When I first exited the Vault 13 cavern, this map screen popped up, and I was utterly lost. It took me a while to figure out that you actually had to click on the map to travel, which was a bit foreign to me, since I'm usually used to an area automatically loading when I leave an area. Other than that, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. :)
