Astrotoy7
I'm hoping to get a new machine soon. But I still play KOTOR, and wish to continue doing so. Thus I am looking at my options. Look no further> aspermentioned **Ask them to install xp on it, or dual boot vista/xp. Those are your options I cant imagine a sane and cool person like you Prime would want to fudge around with Linux mtfbwya
Prime
Actually, I don't mind Linux, as it is what I use at work. But I have several older SW and other games that I still play regularly, so if they all work better with XP then the dual boot is definitely something to consider. I guess my other option is just keeping my old XP machine around and stripping it down just for those games.
Astrotoy7
yes, go with that option prime... you know it works, why mess with it. Plus, if youre buying a pre-config and try install a dualboot yerself, It voids your warranty(if you find that imnportant ) * * * now, drumroll please... In response the original query of this thread I installed Windows 7 pre beta 1. Amazingly, 95% of my device drivers were all OK from the word go. Running windows update gave me my wireless card and audio drivers. The test rig has an ATI 4350. Deployed 3.8 drivers with no issue in windows, BUT >Ran KOTOR hardware test... graphics test failed. Also, it might be worth mentioning the KOTOR config/hardware testing app cant seem to detect an OS past xp (The 4850 under normal circumstances has absolutely no problems running KOTOR1/2) I also updated do the latest (august) iteration of DirectX9 with no issues.. >Ran directX diagnostic...no conflicts reported For the heck of it... >Installed KOTOR2 +updates with original discs >tried to launch game.... FAILED with similar error screen that I get in vista >Here is a pic comparing my vista and W7 dx diag frontscreens >please note the all telling version differences between vista and W7. Indicating the progression to the new kernel has begun, and is in this pre-beta build in some form I will eventually make a more detailed thread over at the techforums for W7 specific stuff, but even at pre-beta stage, I think the indications are troubling... I'll revisit it when we get the proper beta and hopefully ATI/nvidia etc will have released some W7 beta drivers. However, if you want a stable KOTOR experience...to be safe, just stay on XP...! mtfbwya
Q
I guess my other option is just keeping my old XP machine around and stripping it down just for those games. That's a smart option right there. Plus, you could even upgrade your old machine with an old top-of-the-line DX9 card off of Fleabay for about $50-75 (I'd recommend a 7900GTX) in case you want to get a huge 1600p monitor like Astro's and play KotOR on it. A 7900GTX should still allow you to play KotOR at max settings even at that resolution. Of course if you want to go to all of that trouble and expense it would probably be less of a hassle to dual-boot and play KotOR on your modern hardware. Prime
Yep, looks like there are several options. Obviously I'd like to play these games on any new machine I get, but upgrading my old machine with some more RAM, a newer graphics card and reasonable monitor would go a long way. Astrotoy7
..upgrading my old machine with some more RAM, a newer graphics card and reasonable monitor would go a long way. It'd get you a very long way 2GB RAM, Get a nice 24" 1080p LCD, a 9800GT or 4870 and you'd swear you have a new rig mtfbwya
Prime
Maybe that would be a good starting point then. No doubt you'll see me in the tech forum when the time comes.

Det. Bart Lasiter
I'm hoping that there'll be a VM that supports dx9 hardware acceleration ready by the time windows 7 is on the shelves. VMware Fusion for OSX and a few other VMs support dx8 and KVM/Xen has hardware acceleration support with VMGL and hardware virtualization support, although it's only for Linux since it's part of the kernel. Lance Monance
They're already done with Vista? Man, I'm behind. So am I. In fact, I spent considerable time ridding my notebook from vista and installing XP.

A native SATA AHCI hard drive and no BIOS SATA compatibility complicates things even more, you have to create your own custom XP image with the drivers built into it D:

Edit:woops, no bios sata compatibility means that you HAVE to create your own image, true. Fortunately, that wasn't the case with my laptop. =)
Web Rider
My only real concern at the moment for W7 is either doing away with or reducing all these "permissions" I have to deal with. Permissions to move files, to rename files, to change things in "Programs" from read only, ect... I'm glad my PC has been able to ride the storm with XP straight through to whenver 7 comes out, of course by that time I doubt my computer will even be capable of running 9/10 programs and games on the market.
