The Doctor
From what I've heard, Gates has told his people that they're not allowed to release it until it works. And I mean works. Completely. No bugs. I'm sure it will have a reasonable amount of backwards compatibility, as that's been considered one of Vista's greatest flaws.
Lynk Former
It won't be released until it works?.......................I'm thinking we're probably gonna see Duke Nukem Forever released before Windows 7 if that's true.
Darth333
It won't be released until it works?....................... They still haven't defined what "works" mean. As for Kotor, it might or might not work with Vista 7...it is what is considered a somewhat old game now...
Arcesious
Well that will mean less of us complaining about problems this time around...
Aash Li
Works? I think we will see star trek-like computers before a Windows product "works" out of the box like Gates wants. hehe
Corinthian
They're already done with Vista? Man, I'm behind.
Yar-El
My question is, will 7 be better than Vista when playing Kotor 1 & 2? Nope. Windows 7 is being built on Vista's kernel and filing system. We are moving forward and not backwards. Most of the games built on the Fat32 filesystem will not make a full transition. We had this happen before with other games and operating systems. Microsoft is moving forward without Gates this time around. He is only doing commercials now. Gates retired in June. Windows 7's kernel is going to be tweaked in a way to allow better performance. System requirements have been rumored to be the same as Window's vista. All the online screens available for Windows 7 have the same Vista shell. Windows XP is long, long, long gone in Microsoft's philosophy. Microsoft is just cleaning up what went wrong with Vista; however, they are not turning back the clock for game compatibility. Its all about 64bit processing now. Windows 7 will be Windows Vista repackaged with serious fixes to the kernel, better file management for multi-processing, and cleaner resource handling. (Pretty much everything the kernel does.) Nothing backwards. Its Vista but faster and more stable.

Astor
Microsoft is moving forward without Gates this time around. He is only doing commercials now. Gates retired in June. What? Gates stepped down as a full-time officer of the company in June. He still remains as a part-time, non-executive chairman. Gates will never truly retire from his company. Yar-El
Microsoft Announces Plans for July 2008 Transition for Bill Gates Working full time at Microsoft through June 2008, Gates then will continue as chairman and advisor while increasing Foundation efforts; Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie to assume expanded roles. You're right. I can't believe it's not butter.

Astrotoy7
From another site I work at, I'll be testing a W7beta for htpc(home theater pc) functionality in windows 7 media center. When I get it, I'll pop KOTOR in, sit back and laugh Windows 7 is being built on Vista's kernel and filing system. We are moving forward and not backwards. Most of the games built on the Fat32 filesystem will not make a full transition The details of the 7th iteration of the NT kernel have not been released. There is alot of speculation about what it is, including the trimmed Min-Win kernel, but nothing has been set. Alot of the W7 in its current form is built on vista at many levels, as well as it inclusive kernel. In early Longhorn testing days, we all had build copies that were predominately xp The most recent W7 build was pre-beta Milestone 1 Build 6.1.6519.1. Its really vista with some added tweaks built in, like native touchscreen support etc. The 32bit field File allocation table(fat32) is primarily used these days in solid state flash memory. It was chiefly used in the windows OS until WindowsME. XP has fat32 support, however, as HDD sizes have gotten bigger, fat32 has become redundant in desktop pcs. The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GB minus 1 "null" byte (232−1 bytes). HD video, complex graphical apps, and even games go way beyond this. In an htpc 1 hour of recorded hi-def TV at dvbt mpeg2 1920x1080i = 6gb! The reason KOTOR doesnt work on vista is not due to fat32/ntfs clashes. It is purely down to support for legacy graphical processes that have been ditched in favour of ones that allow utilisation of more complex shader models and the advanced particle and lighting effects through DX10. Thats it. Plain and simple. Your point that W7 is moving forward is on the money. The likelihood of improved legacy support is unlikely, especially in graphical applicatiosn where W7 will be sporting DX11. However, MS has categorically confirmed, despite initial speculation otherwise, that x86(32 bit) support will be extended into W7 as well. I personally am quite interested in W7 from a htpc and gaming perspective. It will also be inteersting if they can live up to their '15 second' bootup mantra that being said, there will still be a plethora of mulleted freaks who will try deploy it on non compatible hardware, go red in the face, and then make a youtube vid of them slicing their disc up...... Astrotoy7
Wow, this sounds pretty promesing so far. Astrotoy, are you going to let us know how kotor works with the beta? Promising? You didnt read this bit? The likelihood of improved legacy support is unlikely, especially in graphical applications where W7 will be sporting DX11. but hey, sure I can. I doubt it will be anything different to the way it runs in vista as the new kernel hasnt been properly deployed, nor DX11 implemented. Add to that the fact that beta level drivers from nvidia etc are non existemt(wddm only atm) the likelihood of KOTOR running is as close to zip as you can get mtfbwya
Darth Payne
Ahh nuts. Well, hopefully the complete version of W7 will work better with the kotor games.

Mr Roboto
I've read a little about the pre-beta (alpha?) that's floating around on the net. Many good things have been said. Mainly, the performance blows Vista out of the water. I suppose that's saying a lot considering it's only a pre-beta build.
JesusIsGonnaOwnSatan
From another site I work at, I'll be testing a W7beta for htpc(home theater pc) functionality in windows 7 media center. When I get it, I'll pop KOTOR in, sit back and laugh Quote: that. is. so. awesome! hmm... will you score a free final release copy for yourself for your efforts? I personally am quite interested in W7 from a htpc and gaming perspective. It will also be inteersting if they can live up to their '15 second' bootup mantra they're claiming that?! they better have learnt from vista! any idea when itll be released? mattig89ch
see now i'm kinda hoping they jump the sys requirements back a bit. as in make it 1 gb or Ram instead of 2 (or 4 if your going premium). Traditionaly they just doubled the requirements, but they tripled it with vista....idk, we'll just have to wait and see won't we?
Astrotoy7
I got my pre-beta today. Been a bit busy to install it. WIll do so on the weekend. Its actually one of the legit copies that was handed out to MS PDC(Professional Devs Conference) participants recently. More info on that build here. As I mentioned, I will be focusing on media center functionality, as that has been fleshed out a bit more. In many many other aspects its still vista under the hood. Later 69xx builds are floating around at dev labs atm, where alot of the core stuff is starting to get overhauled. I will *try* to get KOTOR up, just so I can post a fail screenie lolz I will be posting it at the techforum btw - where this type of discussion belongs.. A fully fledged beta is expected early 2009. mtfbwya
Prime
The reason KOTOR doesnt work on vista is not due to fat32/ntfs clashes. I thought KOTOR did work on Vista...
Q
It's pretty much hit-or-miss, Prime. I suspect that one of the reasons it does not run well in Vista is that neither Nvidia nor ATI have given it much consideration in their DX10 drivers. That and Vista's DX9 compatibility layer sucks. Astrotoy7
I thought KOTOR did work on Vista... How about we clarify that for you Primeski. If you have a lucky combination of older GPU, RTM(or close) Vista build and earlier driver version set, then it indeed might, to a degree Sure, KOTOR is fun, but I dont get the obsession that seems to have developed over its vista compatibility. Just stick with what you had when you were playing it damnit Want KOTOR + DX10 readiness for newer titles/kit > These are your options *Dual boot with xp + vista(mod savvy reqd) *dual boot vista with Linux and use WINE (higher savvy reqd) mtfbwya
Prime
I'm hoping to get a new machine soon. But I still play KOTOR, and wish to continue doing so. Thus I am looking at my options.
