Hi

I'm not much of an expert, but I think you should find whatever you need in the subforums of holowan labs (the ones with tutorial at the start of their names). If I can offer a bit of advice, based on my own past mistakes, start simple. I know it's tempting to try a total conversion, or a large scale storyline mod, but please, you'll almost certainly only fail.

Welcome to the forum!!! :thmbup1:

First: Welcome to the forums!

I'd start with skining, or making new items, which is a good way too begin modding.

I recommend to start with having a look on the General Tutorials section, you should find the basic of modding there.

Thanks! This should help nicely.

Does anyone know any good programs to use in modding? I know about KotOR Tool, but that's it.

this page has most of the tools built for editing KOTOR and TSL under the sun.

As for other programs that can be used to mod KOTOR, but isn't made specifically for it:

For skinning, if you have a lot of spare money, you can get a copy of photoshop (or you can do it the other way...), otherwise you can try out GIMP.

If you want to make models, get GMax, or, again, if you have a lot of spare cash (or the other way) you can get 3ds Max. I'm sure even the latest version, 2010, is compatible with the nwmax.

Speaking of which, a tool that is used to get models into max, is nwmax. A quick google search should reveal a good download link to it.

In fact, google should be able to find the other tools (GMax, GIMP, Nwmax, etc) fairly easily.

Hey MK. Listen to these guys. They know what they're talking about.

GIMP is a must-get. It's free and it works just as well as any photoshop program I've ever used.

I would just start with a simple reskin of a texture: maybe recolor the eyes or the hair on a PC head. It's the most basic and straightforward form of modding. Pretty simple to pull off and it usually yields nice results.

If I got it right, Jonathan posted somewhere that PhotoShop CS or CS 2 is free for download.... somewhere.

I'll try to find this back for you, but GIMP is ofcourse a very good alternative.

Plus you'll find lots of info about on the Intrawebz to :p

Owh, welcome to Holowan! Enjoy your stay!

EDIT: Found Jonathans post back on the photoshop thing:

CLICK ME

That should get you started nicely :p

With whatever tool you love to use.

Well GIMP is a look a like of Photoshop.

So getting PS is getting the real deal.

But to say one is better then other... they should be both capable of

doing great art.

And both are well documented, perhaps PS is better off, because it gets used by many professionals. I use it and love it.

But thats just me; Best advice is to give both programs a test run. :p

No doubt they both need some time to get used to, there's no one click magic!
