Ten-Forward
Playing it safe with this outdated AOK engine just totally sucks...Empire Earth is a good example of a game that basically mirrors AOK but is "NEW"...Not a clone of AOK... C'mon Gaber..take a chance...Columbus did...
Chessack
Well, some of us liked the AOK engine and therefore do not mind the mods. I think GB takes a good engine and makes a much better game than the original. To date, all the games that are "like AoK" (i.e. copy-cats or clones, but not using the real engine) have fallen far short of my expectations... Star Trek: Armada and Homeworld being two good examples. They all have different flaws, but none of them are as balanced, and enjoyable, to me, as the original AoK. So I, for one, am glad they did GB exactly as they did. AoK with a Star Wars twist. IMO, best of all worlds. Your milage will, of course, vary. Crazy_dog no.3
Yeah man, give'em a chance, they did add air, Jedi, power and shields, didn't they?
Chessack
Excellent points. It seems that a big factor in whether or not you liked GB, is whether or not you liked the AoK engine. I did, so GB is a nice "expansion" for AoK, as it were. Some people complain that that's all it is, but for me, that's what I wanted... so I am happy. Others, who wanted a whole different game, will not be. I do like the added diimensions you listed, though. Especially air power. That's my favorite new dimension. My only (minor) complaint is that, having added it, they didn't modify the AI in a way that lets the computer properly defend itself against air assaults. Build a 25-bomber squadron, protect it with a 25-fighter squadron, and if you have one of the civs with shields on their fighters, tagainst one that doesn't, hat's pretty much a win vs. the computer. It'd be nice if it were not so automatic. But that's a minor gripe, and I can live with it as is. If you make sure the computer side has at least one civ with decent air units, they can make a fight out of it (though they still don't do enough with air power). Vampire Slayer
I'm glad they used the Genie Engine, Empire Earth just sucks if you ask me. It is 3D, but it lags alot more on multiplayer, RM is crap, and the editor doesn't have nearly as many features (mostly triggers). Even thought it has some more advanced features, it still lacks alot. Lucas Arts already tried to make a Star Wars RTS on its very own new engine, but the game failed because they didn't have enough time to work with it and balance it very good. That's why they played it safe and used an engine that already worked great and then improved on it. Maybe someday there will be a SWGB 2 on the AoM engine if it turns out good. But if they ever used the EE engine, I certainly wouldn't buy it.
Ten-Forward
Vampire makes a good point about his EE feelings...OK...But what i'm saying is..Star Wars was mostly ..save for Hoth and Endor.. About air/space battles...great big shoot outs..and heres were Empire Earth shines...IMHO
Compa_Mighty
You would do the best you could, wouldn't you? You would work as hard as you could to make it the best you could, and you would use the best tools available at the moment. That what LucasArts did. They took the best engine they could (3-D isn't stable or accesible enough for everyone) and they transformed it the best way they could, to what from my point of view is a game just as good as the great Age of Empires. It's not that they didn't take chances, because they did, but ut would be fool to try to use something as undeveloped as 3-D RTS games. If you are reading this Mr. Gaber, I want to tell that you did an absolutely great job. Congratulations, and thank you.

Admiral Odin
Hey I liked Force Commander. People are never happy with a game since there will always be somthing the game cannot do. I personally wanted to have Jedi/Sith lightsabers correspond to the team color, but it doesn't so fine. AoK is a proven engine that is why they used it. The risk they took was People saying it is just AoK and not worth getting. ect.
darthfergie
EE is good...but it really isn't as enjoyable as GB... Empire Earth just didn't take full advantage of the engine they had... flaws... 1. One main camera angle in a 3D engine so it makes it look 2D 2. Single Player Campaign is a waste 3. Where is the Editor?!?!? 4. Crashes to desktop on most computers (patch pending) 5. Strategy??? What Strategy??? 6. and more...
Chessack
The really nice thing about GB, and of course therefore with the AoE/K games, and which is not true of almost any other RTS I have tried, is that you can season it to taste, as it were. If building, resourcing, etc, is your game, and you like to play defensively, you can. If rushing and battle is all you care about, you can do that too. The game is very flexible. In the other RTS games I have played, such as Homeworld and ST: Armada, they pretty much force you into one direction (usually heavily toward combat), and if your tendencies lie elsewhere, tough luck. That's why I like GB and the AoE games so much. If I'm in the mood for battle, I can have that... if I'm in the mood for building, I can have that. If I'm in the mood (as I usually am) for both, I can have that too. No other game I've tried, works so well in such a variety of modes.
Com Raven
Now that they made a safe thing and hopefully got some money from it, maybe the next game in the GB series (it'll be one , right ?? plzzzz!!!) will be more inovative, although they made it a bit difficult for themselves ... AoK is "regular" rts-gaming at it's very best, so how top it ?? I think they should try to make civs more diverse (need different ressources for units and stuff like that, maybe harvest them differently, and of course more diverse units )and use a different enigne (I still think AoM's would be great, cuz whit that one nobody could say it's just an x-pack due to the great differences in gameplay between GB and Aom ...) Guest jediaoe
they will improve on the next game a lot. The aok engine is great. The first aoe game was alright and it had some flaws but aok was awsome. They just need time to put more things together to make the game better. JediMasterEd
i only played the demo version of Force Commander and i really liked it though it ran really slow. the graphics were awsome and i loved the game play...outside of the computer AI. i've been wanting to buy the game but my two 2 GB HD's and my Pentium 1 Motherboard prevents it (The motherboard i have can handle up to a 400 Mhz CPU and i hate it!). i've been trying t have it upgraded by my father but he said it would be easier to buy a whole new comp. getting back to the subject. Gaber i guess wanted to use an engine that was very succesful in the years, in this case, the AoE series. Blizzard and a few other computer gaming manufacturers usually want their games to be the best, thus the "compitition" between the engines produced. using the AoK engine, StarCraft, FC, Star Trek Armada, etc. was produced to either beat or match the game that Microsoft had made. Empire Earth's engine was good but Gaber probably wanted to try something else. better safe than sorry.

LoF_Reaper
The good thing about this engine,is it lets alot of people be able to play the game. They dont need a super computer to get it to play like empire earth.Yes they could have done a bit with the AI,as it needs some improvment. This game willlast as long as they update and patch it when needed. The release of AOM i think wont be that great, how long will it take for people to tire playing a 4 civ game? When more people get to play this game they will come to see how good it really is! Com Raven
AoM has 3 civs with 3 sub-civs each, so that totals up to 9, plus they'll be more diverse than in GB, and as far as I know SC had just 3 !!! civs, and according to my knowledge it is at least a bit popular ...
