Vagabond
Actually, is there anyone here old enough to remember a sci-fi flick called Silent Running? It was made in 1971, and takes place in 2001 - it's about a guy that lives aboard this huge space greenhouse spacecraft with his three droid-like companions. Anyway, it's a really good movie, but my point is that the little droid characters look very similar to Power Droids. So, although I've never been necessarily fond of Power Droids, they've always kind of reminded me of the droids in Silent Running, so I've never really minded them. Keep in mind, when I first saw Silent Running I was just a little kid, and these droids fascinated me because they looked so realistic. So for me there's a bit a nostalgia with Power Droids. Wacky_Baccy
I've seen that! I was trying to remember the name of that very film only a few days ago, and now I know - thanks Vag The droid things in the film do look quite a bit like Gonks, now that I think about it - maybe GL got the idea for them from watching this... or maybe not
Lord_FinnSon
Yes, I remember that movie! Bruce Dern played the idealistic astronaut who protected the plants until the very end and even killed those other guys, who were trying to destroy greenhouse because they were asked to come back home. Funny, I never saw connection between these movies, but imagery that Lucas uses in Star Wars is borrowed heavily from Flash Gordon and all those B-scifi movies; even though he had much bigger budget. It's also interesting to notice that Douglas Trumbull directed this movie because he was king of visual effects of his time, before SW came out and I do remember that Lucas even thought about letting him to do effects for Star Wars. So, there might be much more little similarities with this and many other scifi movies of the 70s(and before that)than we could ever point out... Does anyone still remember Logan's Run? Lord_FinnSon
I'm not that old! Both of these movies came out before I was even born yet, but I saw them on TV...
Lady Jedi
I didn't really find gonks all that annoying. I think that it's kinda fun to bump into 'em and hear them say "gooonk". Hee hee. So I don't really care what they do to the gonks.
GonkH8er
Then I guess you won't mind if I kill them in insanely cruel ways... One thing I don't understand though.... in RotJ when the Gonk's being tortured, it's having red hot irons put on it's feet. It seems to be screaming. Why? Is it feeling pain? I've got a wav file of the thing screaming on my other system. I'll see if I can find it
StormHammer
I'd have to say I'm completely neutral where Gonk droids are concerned. I can't say that I really like them, but I don't hate them either. I'll probably slice and dice a few (along with everything else) in JKII, though, just to see all the pretty effects. As for Silent Running...yes, I remember it well, Vagabond. I have it on video, in fact, and it's a very good film. I probably saw it first on TV as well, because I was 5 when it was originally released in 1972. I have to say I'd never really associated the three droids with Gonks...although now you've mentioned it there is a similarity. As for Gonks feeling pain? I never worked that one out either... It obviously feels something while being tortured, but you have to wonder why the feet are so sensitive. And Lord_FinnSon, yes, I remember Logan's Run too. That was released in the early 70's...so I must have caught that on TV in the mid-late 70's. It was much better than the execrable TV series that followed... Kestral
Silent Running and BattleStar Galactica had scenes which were completely recycled from each other. The starships were the same, that part with the bird on the pathway is the same.
StormHammer
I don't see how they can be recycled from each other when Silent Running was released in 1972, and Battlestar Galactica came after Star Wars. I think BG took clips from just about every SF flick going at some point in the course of the series. I remember that whenever there was a raging inferno on the Galactica, they took the same stock footage that Damnation Alley used. I think maybe we ought to start a thread about all these movies in the Swamp...

Redwing
...I answered Gonk, but the post got lost. Anyway, it makes sense for sensors to be put on their feet, to keep them off of surfaces or places that could damage or destroy them. Because of the *pain*, they'd want to get away from the dangerous place.
